SDCC 2025: Nacelle reveals Power Lords Wave 1

The NacelleVerse is expanding even further with a new set of Power Lords figures, which were showcased for the first time at The Nacelle Company’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday, July 24. The new features the hero Adam Power and the main villain, Arkus. Both figures include updated versions of their original accessories, with blast effects and stands.

  • Adam Power (MSRP: TBA): as the main hero figure, has the twisting feature that allows him to transform into Lord Power, as inspired by the original ’80s toy, along with additional customization.
  • Arkus (MSRP: TBA): is also the first toy from the Nacelleverse to hit over 10 inches in height, and also is the featured as the main villain from the series.

When deep-space smuggler Adam Power comes into possession of the mysterious Power Jewel, he finds himself transformed into something far greater and more powerful than the sum of his parts—only to discover he’s been drafted into an eons-old battle between good and evil that could rend entire galaxies asunder! Power Lords #1 is the latest revival of an 80s property.

Written by Dennis Culver and Matt Hotson, Power Lords #1 kicks off a new chapter for the classic series and delivers a start that’s entertaining and shows some promise. Power Lords is an 80s property I barely remember. Some of the character designs look familiar but the overall concept and any detail is totally lost to me. The comic dumps readers right into the action focused not so much on what each character can do but instead more focused on the plot to come. We get a general sense of who everyone is and there’s some interesting things with time travel, but overall, the introduction falls a bit short of giving a reason to care for these characters beyond the twist of the comic. They go through motions with no connection as to why I should care about the outcomes of that.

The art by V Ken Marion is good. With color by Andrew Dalhouse and lettering by Taylor Esposito, the comic has a lot going on for the characters. There’s a few panels where it’s not quite clear what’s happening but overall, with such a varied design of a cast, it all looks good. There’s noticeable size differences in the characters that really help them pop and the action has a certain “middle of it all” feel to it.

Power Lords #1 isn’t a bad start but at the same time beyond it’s later twist, there’s little that makes it interesting. The characters feel torn from 80s action films representing more of an archetype than actual characters. Overall, it’s another Nacelleverse launch that feels a bit more focused on the flash of it all than the depth.

Wayne Barlowe returns to Power Lords!

Oni Press and The Nacelle Company have announced a major event in the history of the publisher’s growing stable of hit Nacelleverse series as Hugo Award-nominated, Locus Award-winning illustrator – and original Power Lords character designer – Wayne Barlowe lends his talents to January’s Power Lords #1 with his first-ever comic book cover! 

Debuting with two distinct editions of Power Lords #1 by writers Dennis Culver and Matt Hotson and artist V Ken Marion – as both an “open order” shelf cover and incentive, 1:50 “full art” variant featuring the complete detail of the artist’s unexpurgated painting – this Nacellverse milestone is a homecoming for Barlowe, who designed the Power Lords distinctive and enduring characters for the debut of the original Revell action figure line in 1983. 

In addition to designing the enduring visual identity of the Nacelleverse’s farthest-reaching cosmic heroes with the Power Lords, Barlowe has forged a distinctive and influential path with a career spanning illustration and concept art across more than 45 years in film, fiction, and toys. Originally reaping renown for his Hugo Award and American Book Award-nominated masterwork, Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials, Barlowe’s talents soon transitioned from page to screen as he collaborated with some of the most renowned filmmakers of all time to forge the visual identities and environments for seminal science-fiction films, including James Cameron’s Avatar, Alfonso Cuarón’s Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy and Pacific Rim, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and many more.

In addition to Barlowe’s near-nonstop work in film and television, he is also the author of several novels (God’s Demon, The Heart Of Hell). He has also written and illustrated a number of art books, including Expedition, Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials, Barlowe’s Guide to Fantasy, Barlowe’s Inferno, Brushfire, The Alien Life of Wayne Barlowe, and An Alphabet of Dinosaurs. Expedition aired as the Discovery Channel’s special “Alien Planet” in 2005.

Power Lords #1 will mark the first comic book cover Barlowe has ever created in his long and distinguished career and marks his singular return to the seminal toy franchise since the early 1980s.

NYCC 2023: Nacelle and Oni press partner for a new graphic novel publishing line

In advance of New York Comic Con 2023, the Nacelle Company – the global pop-culture powerhouse behind The Movies That Made Us, The Toys That Made Us, A Toy Store Near You, and many more – has announced a brand-new partnership with Oni Press that will see the company’s growing portfolio of iconic toy and animation properties rocket forward with an all-new line of comic books and graphic novels from premier creative talents, beginning in spring 2024.

Laying the foundation for the upcoming Nacelleverse of interconnected animated series (beginning with 2024’s Robo Force and Biker Mice From Mars, produced in partnership with Ryan Reynolds), the new Nacelle/Oni publishing line will begin with Nacelleverse #0–an oversized, 40-page one-shot helmed by writer Melissa Flores with art by Diogenes Neves alongside more all-star artists from upcoming Nacelleverse comic series, including Robo Force, Biker Mice From Mars, Sectaurs, The Great Garloo, and Power Lords, with a wraparound cover by comics legend Mike Deodato, Jr. 

The giant-sized Nacelleverse #0 – featuring the first comic book appearances of many of the Nacelleverse’s biggest heroes and villains – will be followed by Robo Force #1 (of 3), which will introduce the 22nd century world of the Nacelleverse in the first of a new slate of interconnected limited series from writer Melissa Flores.
