Mad Cave Studios has announced Don’t Forget Your Briefcase, a five-issue political farce by best-selling author Eliot Rahal and acclaimed artist Phillip Sevy. Joined by colorist Warnia K. Sahadewa and letterer Frank Cvetkovic, this team is set to deliver a thrilling, darkly comedic take on nuclear warfare and the chaos of global power structures.

Everywhere the President goes, there is a military liaison who follows, carrying a briefcase with the codes to launch a nuclear strike—and it’s just been lost. This is the story about what happens when a ten-year-old boy finds a nuclear football and accidentally brings the world to the brink of annihilation.

X-Men Wedding Special #1 Serves as a Great Wedding Story but Not a Strong Marvel Pride Issue

Mystique and Destiny, one of the oldest gay couples in Marvel comics, decide to renew their vows in X-Men Wedding Special #1 by an ensemble of various creatives. Serving as this year’s Marvel’s Voices Pride, read about the wedding of the millennium with one of the comics’ most significant relationships, Betsy and Rachel, facing a dangerous threat by an old foe, a group of young mutants trying to find the perfect wedding gift and more. Although it works better to celebrate Irene’s and Raven’s relationship, X-Men Wedding Special #1 feels like a weaker substitute for the Marvel Voices Pride specials from the past years.

The best aspect lies in the overarching story “Something Borrowed, Something Blue” by Kieron Gillen, Rachael Stott, and Michael Bartolo, which focuses on the wedding of Irene and Raven as the pair have a secret scheme that the guests and their kids Rogue and Nightcrawler do not know about. Aside from the historical nature of the wedding, it also serves as a capstone for Gillen’s work with the pair during the Krakoan era. I enjoy how Gillen characterizes the chaotic and villainous sapphic couple whose love is immortal. Stott’s beautiful art, paired with Bartolo’s colors, conveyed the majestic and gorgeous nature of the wedding. The other stories by Tini Howard, Phillip Sevy, KJ Díaz, Wyatt Kennedy, Jenn St-Onge, Brittany Peer, and more are primarily good but range in quality. 

Outside of the original stories, the issue includes a history of Irene’s and Raven’s relationship, an interview with Chris Claremont, and reprints of two LGBTQ+ X-Men-focused Marvel issues. X-Men Wedding Special #1 does not justify its price tag, even with the included supplementary materials. Granted, it is a super-sized issue, but I wish the special contained more original materials and a more substantial publishing and presentation for the physical printed issue. Considering how last year’s Pride special included more stories, interviews, and other elements, X-Men Wedding Special #1 feels less impressive and a step down in quality and execution. 

Lastly, X-Men Wedding Special #1 serves as this year’s Marvel’s Voices Pride, which does not showcase a large variety of LGBTQ+ representation. By solely focusing on Irene, Raven, and some of the X-Men exclusively, it cuts out the other LGBTQ+ mutant and non-mutant characters teased on the variant covers. Similarly, what should be a meaningful celebration for two beloved queer characters becomes saddled with being the big LGBTQ+ special by Marvel comics. This decision cuts out queer and trans-non-mutant characters, along with not highlighting other spaces of the universe. The representation is more limited and does not portray the breadth of queer and trans characters in the comics. As a result, if Marvel released a 2024 issue of Marvel’s Voices Pride in addition to X-Men Wedding Special #1, my opinions would be more favorable due to the latter not being the sole major queer tentpole special for the year. Outside of being the monumental wedding issue of Irene and Raven, it is also their yearly Pride issue, which comes across as more corporate synergy than a stand-alone celebration.

Overall, X-Men Wedding Special #1 bolsters a talented team of creatives who celebrate a wedding centuries in the making, which conflicts with being 2024’s Marvel’s Voices Pride. I loved the wedding aspect, but I wish it had more stories and materials representing more queer and trans characters outside of solely X-Men ones. With Irene and Raven having Marvel’s first sapphic wedding, its memorability and impact get slightly lessened with the other aspects the issue needs to juggle. As a result, X-Men Wedding Special #1 cannot solely be about their wedding but also has to carry the weight of being this year’s Marvel’s Voices Pride. I prefer if this served as a stand-alone special issue along with having a Marvel’s Voices Pride 2024 issue. X-Men Wedding Special #1 celebrates the immortal love of Irene and Raven while struggling to showcase the diverse LGBTQ+ community in Marvel comics.

Steve Foxe and Steve Orlando kick off a new arc of X-Men Unlimited

New on Marvel Unlimited from the vertical Infinity Comics lineup: In an all-new Fall of X story arc, Arakkii warrior Bei the Blood Moon returns to Krakoa from the home front to perform a ritual combat in “Red Winter Sun,” a new three-part story arc in X-Men Unlimited #118-120.

While the holiday season falls upon what’s left of Krakoa’s mutants, Bei the Blood Moon turns to memories of Genesis and the war being waged on Arakko. Will this warrior of solitude embrace change, and companionship, in her mission forged in blood?

Dark Horse Presents: A frightfully fun double feature of comics and film on November 2

In celebration of the recent release of The Headless Horseman Halloween Annual 2023 one-shot, the launch of Count Crowley: Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter, and the stunning and bloody conclusion of The Lonesome Hunters: The Wolf Child, Dark Horse presents a special event at the historic Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon.

On Thursday, November 2, Dark Horse continues the Halloween and spooky season celebrations with a screening of Frankenhooker—chosen especially for this event by actor and writer David Dastmalchian—followed by a discussion of horror comics with Tyler Crook and Lukas Ketner, hosted by Eric Li. While David Dastmalchian is not able to make it to the event in person, he will be introducing the film via a special video just for the audience.

A special limited-edition variant of The Headless Horseman Halloween Annual 2023, illustrated by Phillip Sevy, will also be available at the event for purchase from Dark Horse and Things From Another World along with other horror comics from both Tyler Crook and Lukas Ketner. The limited-edition (only 500 copies!) variant of The Headless Horseman Halloween Annual 2023 is priced at $20. For those who cannot make it to the event, the special variant is also available for sale at darkhorsedirect.com, while supplies last.

Event details: On Thursday, November 2, doors at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd. Portland, OR 97212) will open at 6:30 pm, followed by the film at 7:30 pm. Seating is first-come, first-served. Following the showing of Frankenhooker, comic creators Tyler Crook and Lukas Ketner will be joined by Eric Li on stage for a live Q&A session about the comics. Audience questions will also be encouraged, and if there is time, the creators will sign comics at the Dark Horse and TFAW tables in the lobby.

This year, Dark Horse Comics is celebrating with a limited-edition variant of The Headless Horseman Halloween Annual 2023 one-shot with brand new cover art by Phillip Sevy. This special variant is limited to just 500 copies, which will be available at select events.

This special variant is available at New York Comic Con at Phillip Sevy’s table in Artists Alley #B10. Each venue will have the comic for sale for $20. Limit two copies per person, per day.

There will be later events and opportunities to snag this special variant, including online sales through Dark Horse Direct, but with quantities this limited, fans won’t want to sleep on this special spooky variant cover!

SDCC 2023: Greg Capullo returns to Marvel with Variant Covers

At San Diego Comic-Con, retailers attended an exclusive lunch hosted by Diamond Comics where they got the inside scoop from Marvel’s VP of Print & Digital Publishing David Gabriel and Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski! Amidst exciting announcements for new titles, collections, and variant covers, retailers were the first to learn that industry legend Greg Capullo will make his long-heralded return to Marvel Comics later this year!

Capullo, an artist who catapulted to stardom after his acclaimed work on X-Force in the 90s and numerous impactful runs across the comic book world, is back at Marvel for the first time in decades. Marvel Comics is proud to welcome Capullo back into the fold, and right now, fans can check out his first new work for the Marvel mythos: an explosive variant cover for Wolverine #37! Previously listed as a top secret classified variant cover, the cover will hit stands on September 20. Preorder it at your local comic shop today!
