Once & Future #1 Fourth Printing

Review: Once & Future #1

Once & Future #1

Once & Future #1 is already a success going into four printings, so far, and that’s before it’s release. When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead to gain power, ex-monster hunter Bridgette McGuire escapes her retirement home and pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat.

Written by Kieron Gillen, Once & Future #1 is a hell of a debut. The issue takes a relevant current issue and uses it to drive a fantastical story. Boiled down to its basics, the comic is a person trying to stop nationalists. With the rise of the alt-right and nationalists, that’s something that reflects today. But, while that’s the basics, the comic itself is enjoyable without that aspect. It’s a monster hunter trying to stop the monster. It just so happens the monster hunter is a woman in her 80s.

And that’s what makes the comic fun.

Gillen delivers characters with personality. There’s something about each of them that they stand out. They’re larger than life in a way and are familiar but still stand out. Everything is over the top in a way that forces you to just go with the ride and enjoy each beat.

That’s helped by Dan Mora whose art emphasizes each moment. With color by Tamra Bonvillain and lettering by Ed Dukeshire, that larger than life aspect applies to the characters too. Expressions are over the top in a way, but a good way. It helps create a fun aspect to it all and helps the comedic beats. There’s a solid blend of fantasy and reality to a point a mystical monster can show up and be challenged with a spear as well as a gun that’d make Rob Liefeld smile.

Once & Future #1 is a solid debut. The comic has a fun vibe about it and is able to blend a serious subject with comic fantasy. The characters all stand out and the pacing is amazing. It’s one hell of a beginning that shows off why it’s already into four printings and expect many more.
