Richard Rider is back from the dead! Even better – he’s back in his Nova helmet! But Earth already HAS a Nova as its guardian, and Sam Alexander isn’t one to be replaced so easily…

Review: Nova #1

nova__1CLASSIFIED makes his roaring return to the Marvel Universe! How will Sam Alexander cope with this unfathomable homecoming? It’s the return you’ve all been waiting for. Or is something…else?

Ok, it has “classified” but it’s not a spoiler to say the comic sees the return of Richard Rider. It’s not a spoiler because he actually showed up at the end of the last volume of Nova. But, how has he returned? For those who don’t know Rider was stuck in the Cancerverse after an epic battle with Thanos that trapped him, Thanos, Drax, and Peter Quill. Rider sent Drax and Quill back to the 616 (and Thanos) but he was stuck in the “dead” universe where we thought he perished. But, it looks like he’s back… or is he?

Something is clearly up and that’s the mystery of the issue and probably the first arc. It’s obvious something has followed Rider back or is behind his return and judging by the imagery that he sees and around him it’s probably something from the Cancerverse (think Cthulhu Elder Gods type things).

Beyond that mystery the comic focuses on the new Nova Sam Alexander as he does his best to live a normal life. The comic is really fun and entertaining giving us a tone that matches Alexander’s age. It’s funny. It’s entertaining. And what’s interesting is that it is the opposite of tone of Rider’s part of the storye.

Writers Jeff Loveness and Ramon K. Perez (Perez also handles art) do a fantastic job of balancing humor and horror in an interesting mash-up of a story. It’s a comic that at parts feels like it’s aimed at a younger audience and at other times it’s not. The horror aspect is cool and that’s partially due to Perez’s art style and the subtle hints he places throughout.

I generally haven’t read too many Nova comics featuring Alexander, but this first issue has me wanting to come back. It has that nice balance and it’s entertaining in a way a lot of comics misses. It knows when to not take things seriously and due to that the parts that are supposed to be serious feel even more so.

Nova #1 wasn’t on my radar, but after reading this first issue, it’s a series I’m absolutely coming back for more.
