Review: Nocterra #4

Nocterra #4

Over four issues, we’ve slowly seen the world of Nocterra built out. Nocterra #4 delivers more of that bouncing between the past and present and in doing so giving us a better idea about its characters. The issue has Val and her crew still on the run and delivers an air of desperation and in some ways depression.

Writer Scott Snyder does a solid job of taking us on an emotional ride with the issue giving us highs and lows. After the attack by Bill we learn the truck is draining power with just enough to get to the destination and no more after that. It’s a key moment for the series. Snyder presents us with an option. Go back to the town they came from with nothing in hand and a lot lost or keep moving forward with a chance that they might find what they’re looking for. That a literal light is at the end of the tunnel. And Synder, as he does so well, makes it seem not so good. There’s a lot of directions each scene could go and things could always get worse. Snyder brilliantly leaves the readers guessing how low things can go and if there’s any hope at the end.

Where the series excels is folding in the past. Nocterra #4 opens on Val and her brother as they attempt to figure out what to do as kids. There’s promise that the government will come to help. There’s the reality that it isn’t coming. They also have to deal with their parents who have turned and attempting to break through the basement door. We see the bond between Val and her brother as she ponders her decision-making and leadership. Snyder does an excellent job on tying that memory into the current situation.

The art continues to be solid. Tony S. Daniel delivers a dark and twisted world using the shadows well. Tomeu Morey‘s colors really makes the series with a mix of the blackness and neon/day-glow coloring to emphasize the light. The tension that Snyder brings is emphasized by the art which uses the shadows and darkness so well. You have no idea what might pop up from where keeping readers on their toes. It also really delivers the action when things get rolling. The entire issue is full of a frantic pace and the art really nails that down. Then there’s that last panel which is so solid and just nailed perfectly.

Nocterra #4 is another solid issue. It builds upon the world while giving us lots of action. It’s a nice emotional ride that you have no idea what will happen next. It’s an exciting comic that is able to balance world-building with the action in front of you.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

BY THE HORNS #2

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Basilisk #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from Cullen Bunn, nuff said.

Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #1 (DC Comics) – The Court of Owls enters the Batman animated world. Yes, please!

By the Horns #2 (Scout Comics) – A revenge story about a woman going after the unicorns that killed her beloved. It’s over the top fantasy adventure and the first issue was so good.

Crush & Lobo #1 (DC Comics) – We want to see where this goes.

DC Horror Presents: The Conjuring: The Lover #1 (DC Comics) – DC gets back into the movie tie-in business and launches a new horror line at the same time!

Everfrost #1 (Black Mask Studios) – Van Louise wants to get off her world but her plans are troubled by a mounting war. We’re intrigued by this sci-fi series and excited to read the debut.

The Nice House on the Lake #1 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The first issue is good. It’s really good. A solid start to this series written by James Tynion IV.

Nocterra #4 (Image Comics) – The series has been a fascinating one as it plays with light and dark. The ride has been solid and we’re excited to see where it all goes considering how the last issue ended.

Out of Body #1 (AfterShock) – A man must figure out who tried to kill him. Problem is he’s in a coma.

Sam & His Talking Gun #3 (Scout Comics) – The title says it all really. The second issue shifted things and delivered an origin story and we want to see where the third takes us.

Serial #4 (Abstract Studio) – This horror series has been growing on us with each issue. We want to see where it all goes as we learn more about the murderer and the young girl tracking it down.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1 (Marvel) – The event features a lot of issues but we want to see what happened when Boba Fett attempted to deliver Han to Jabba.

Worst Dudes #1 (Dark Horse) – The series has been teased as over the top gonzo and we want to see if that’s true or not.

Heroes Reborn #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman #108 (DC Comics) – Batman’s undercover to discover what’s up with the new group in town while things are in motion elsewhere bringing together the future Gotham we witnessed in Future State.

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue leaned more heavily to fans of Fortnite so we’re intrigued to see if the second issue is more friendly to people new to Fortnite.

Becstar #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A star-hopping mercenary-gone-full time-gambler. Yeah, that kind of sounds awesome.

Broken Souls Ballad #1 (Scout Comics/Black Caravan) – Saint Abigail’s Institute creates monsters – and those monsters are teenagers! The teens discover they have abilities tied to their psychosomatic conditions.

ENIAC #3 (Bad Idea) – The two issues so far have been entertaining with a nice mix of alternate history and action. We’re hoping for more of the same in this tech-thriller.

Eve #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Eve wakes up to a world she wasn’t traiend to live in, a future dystopian America.

The Good Asian #1 (Image Comics) – Following Edison Hark-a haunted, self-loathing Chinese-American detective-on the trail of a killer in 1936 Chinatown. Yeah, we’re in.

Green Lantern #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was a bit choppy but our new favorite Green Lantern Jo (from Far Sector) debuts in this issue and we’re excited!

Heroes Reborn #1 (Marvel) – It shares a name with that other event but isn’t related. A new world where the Avengers never happened and only Blade remembers… yeah, we want to check this out.

Marjorie Finnegan: Temporal Criminal #1 (AWA Studios) – Garth Ennis writing a new series. That alone has this comic on the list.

Nocterra #3 (Image Comics) – A world of darkness and an amazing new villain. Nocterra is so well thought out at so many details.

The Secret to Superhuman Strength (Mariner Books) – Alison Bechdel goes over her fascination with fitness crazes.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1 (Marvel) – It’s a major crossover event in the Star Wars universe as bounty hunters are all after the same bounty… Han Solo frozen in carbonite!

Suicide Squad #3 (DC Comics) – The first two issues have been full of action with some interesting personalities. Add in a body count that’s already high, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Whalesville x Rocks and Minerals (Bad Idea) – The comic sounds like it’s more geared towards all ages and with a new format for Bad Idea, we want to see what they have in store for fans.

Nocterra #2 Gets the Spotlight with a Sell Out

Fan enthusiasm for Scott Snyder and Tony S. Daniel’s hot new series Nocterra has spread like wildfire with the second issue sparking an instant sell-out, at the distributor, upon its release yesterday. A rush reprint of Nocterra #2 is being fast-tracked by Image Comics in order to keep up with the series’ frenetic reorder momentum.

Ten years after the world is plunged into an everlasting night that turns all living creatures into monstrous shades, the only way to survive is to stay close to artificial light.

In Nocterra #2, Val brings her passengers to their first truckstop—the Neon Grove! But with her brother getting worse by the minute, and dark forces in hot pursuit, our ferryman finds herself faced with a grave decision.

Nocterra #2, second printing (Diamond Code FEB219271) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, May 5.

Nocterra #2, second printing

Review: Nocterra #2

Nocterra #2

Nocterra #1 was a solid start to the series. It introduced us to a world plunged in darkness and a compelling lead in Val, aka Sundog. It also gave us a solid supporting cast and a unique villain. Nocterra #2 continues the tense action as we learn the truth about Val’s passengers and hints as to what’s going on in the world.

Val’s on the run, pursued by Blacktop Bill for unknown reasons. Writer Scott Snyder uses the opportunity to dive further into the world, showing us more of Val’s past as well as the present. The issue does a solid job of fleshing out the world of Nocterra. We get a better sense of what the early days were like as well as what the world is currently like. But, Snyder also keeps things familiar.

The concept of a driver hauling passengers for money to get dragged into something bigger isn’t anything new. It’s a story that’s been done before. What Snyder does is gives us details and specifics that are unique and interesting. The idea of individuals who slowly change and unknown reasons for the darkness are two concepts that suck the reader in. The specifics as to how this society functions and generates light too are details that create depth to a familiar story. It’s the quality of the details that really suck the reader in.

The visuals help too.

Tony S. Daniel along with colorist Tomeu Morey give us images that pop from the page. For a world of darkness there’s so much color and light. Things jump from page in a bright, almost neon, look. In Blacktop Bill, we also have a unique villain that’s something I’ve never seen. And that feels like a lot of the comic. This is a world I haven’t seen before. It’s concepts and visuals pop on the page. There’s such a simplicity to it all in ideas but it’s done so well and to a level that really stands out.

Nocterra #2 is a great second issue that delivers more depth to the world and some exciting reveals. It’s an issue that continues to expand upon the first building an exciting story in an intriguing world. This is some top-notch work and an action comic that begs you to get lost in the darkness.
