Kana will release Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki’s entire 20 volume manga masterpiece Billy Bat in English

Kana, the dedicated manga imprint of Abrams ComicArts, has announced the highly anticipated English-language publication of acclaimed manga creator Naoki Urasawa and collaborator Takashi Nagasaki‘s historical conspiracy thriller, Billy Bat. Beginning in June 2026, Kana will publish Volume 1, kicking off an ambitious schedule of four volumes per year, ultimately releasing all 20 volumes.

Billy Bat is an enthralling, genre-defying series that combines mystery, historical fiction, conspiracy theory, and metafiction, unfolding across multiple eras and continents. Set initially in America in 1949, it follows Japanese-American comics artist Kevin Yamagata, who returns home after serving under the Allied Forces in World War II. Kevin quickly becomes famous for his detective comic character, Billy Bat. However, his newfound success is soon overshadowed by a disturbing revelation—Billy Bat already exists in Japan. Fearing unintentional plagiarism, Kevin embarks on a journey to Japan to uncover the truth, only to find himself ensnared in a tangled web of murders, secret societies, and prophetic mysteries spanning millennia.

Naoki Urasawa, widely recognized as a transformative force in contemporary manga, has been honored with numerous awards including three Shogakukan Manga Awards, two Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes, and a Kodansha Manga Award. His highly acclaimed series include Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto (recently adapted by Netflix). South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite) hailed Urasawa as “the greatest storyteller of our time,” while Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Díaz described him as a “national treasure in Japan.”

Co-creator Takashi Nagasaki is an accomplished author and manga writer known for his collaboration with Urasawa on Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto. Nagasaki brings his expertise in storytelling and deep knowledge of the manga industry, having previously served as an editor at Shogakukan before transitioning into freelance writing.

Billy Bat is celebrated for its riveting narrative, which blends historical events with surreal, suspenseful twists and a sharp sense of humor. The series features prominent historical figures including Albert Einstein, Walt Disney (reimagined as “Chuck Culkin”), John F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong, Adolf Hitler, and even Oda Nobunaga. The series’ innovative approach places it perfectly alongside today’s popular historical fiction and speculative drama series like Bridgerton, Outlander, and All the Light We Cannot See, appealing to both dedicated manga enthusiasts and new readers eager to explore the medium.

A perennial fan-favorite often listed among manga readers’ “Top 10 Manga That Need an English Release,” Billy Bat has achieved widespread success and critical acclaim internationally. Kana’s forthcoming publication ensures that English-speaking audiences will finally experience the full scope of Urasawa and Nagasaki’s ambitious storytelling.

Look for Billy Bat Vol. 1 in bookstores and comic shops everywhere in June 2026.

20th CENTURY BOYS is the story of a group of boys who try to save the world. Humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren’t for them. In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol. In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns.

For Kenji, a simple convenience store manager who once dreamed of becoming a rock ‘n’ roll musician, a host of memories from his past come rushing back when one of his childhood friends mysteriously commits suicide. Determined to dig deeper, Kenji reunites with some of his old buddies in the hope of learning the truth behind it all.

“We’re elated to have NAOKI URASAWA’S 20th CENTURY BOYS recognized by the comic book industry such a prestigious award,” says Andy Nakatani, Editorial Director at VIZ Media and editor for the title. “Urasawa‘s tense and dramatic storylines have firmly established him among the very top echelon of manga creators. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are considered the “Oscars” of the comic book industry and are named for renowned cartoonist Will Eisner (creator of The Spirit and several award-winning graphic novels). The awards are handed out each year in a gala ceremony at Comic-Con International in San Diego, the largest and oldest comic book convention in the United States.

Naoki Urasawa’s career as a manga artist spans more than twenty years and has firmly established him as one of the true manga masters of Japan. Born in Tokyo in 1960, Urasawa debuted with BETA! in 1983 and hasn’t stopped his impressive output since. Well-versed in a variety of genres, Urasawa’s oeuvre encompasses a multitude of different subjects, such as a romantic comedy (YAWARA! A FASHIONABLE JUDO GIRL), a suspenseful human drama about a former mercenary (PINEAPPLE ARMY; story by Kazuya Kudo), a captivating psychological suspense story (NAOKI URASAWA’S MONSTER), a sci-fi adventure manga (NAOKI URASAWA’S 20TH CENTURY BOYS), and a modern reinterpretation of the work of the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka (PLUTO: URASAWA X TEZUKA; co-authored with Takashi Nagasaki, supervised by Macoto Tezka, and with the cooperation of Tezuka Productions). Many of his books have spawned popular animated and live-action TV programs and films, and 2008 saw the theatrical release of the first of three live-action Japanese films based on NAOKI URASAWA’S 20TH CENTURY BOYS.

No stranger to accolades and awards, Urasawa is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award, a two-time recipient of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, and has received the Kodansha Manga Award. Urasawa has also become involved in the world of academia, and in 2008 accepted a guest teaching post at Nagoya Zokei University, where he teaches courses in, of course, manga.
