Review: Mystery Girl #4

Trine may be down for the count, but she’s not out yet! Left for dead in a frozen Siberian wasteland, she has already solved the mystery of how to survive—the bad guys just don’t know it yet. And when she gets back to London, one shadowy group’s misdeeds will be brought to light.

Mystery Girl #4 was a massive surprise, given the cliffhanger the previous issue had. While I won’t give the surprise away, I will admit it is impressive twist. That means I can’t even give away the ending, that leaves you only wanting more.

The opening panels, detailing an incredibly fluid fight scene are superb. Despite the risqué nature of one of the fighters, who is a friend of Trine. As night turns to day, the color scheme changes greatly. While that is nice to indicate the change,it manages to  intermingle and help push the story along in a superb fashion.

Honestly I doubt this will be the end of the series anytime soon, but I do hope Dark Horse keeps these two together. I’m curious to see what else they will make in the future.

Review: Mystery Girls #2

Trine knows the answer to any question, except how she knows it. But that’s a mystery for later. The mystery for now concerns frozen mammoths in Siberia, and Trine, who never leaves London, wants to go see them herself. And close behind her is a killer who’s targeted Trine for reasons even she doesn’t know.

Strippers, hit-man, Woolly mammoths, and Russia, four words I never expected to type in a row. Yet all those things are present in Mystery Girl #2, oddly enough they are impressively connected by writer Paul Tobin. That easily manages to bolster the stories’ strangeness to say the least. Despite the strangeness there is still some humor present, which makes the story comedic at times.

If a picture is a worth a thousand words the art work by Alberto Alburquerque is a compliment to the story.  The art has a degree of realism, and showcases the changing locations as the story progresses. Even the various cities of Russia are well done, and defiantly solidifies the real-ness of the fictional world.

28151SHE CAN SOLVE ANY MYSTERY BUT HER OWN!

Trine Hampstead knows everything. Ask her a question like “Where are my keys?” or “Is he cheating on me?” or “How are there perfectly preserved mammoths in recent ice?” and she just knows. She’s the Mystery Girl. The only thing Trine doesn’t know is how she knows—or anything else from the last ten years of her life.

To call this odd, would be an understatement. While the story makes sense, there are defiantly some “odd,” moments. Along some moments of humor, that fill the story. Humor and odd moments, the chosen setting was a surprise given how little the cover reveals.

The artwork has nice, almost organic flow that works well the elements of the story.  For the most part the artwork is colorful, excluding a few panels were the they use only three, or for colors. While I can’t share the panels directly, you will see what I mean when you pick-up and read the issue.
