Top Gun: Maverick locks on to first and takes out Multiverse of Madness

It shouldn’t be a surprise but Top Gun: Maverick was the top of the weekend box office earning $124 million over three days. The film set a record with over $151 million over the Memorial Day weekend. The delayed film found its audience and earned an additional $109.6 million overseas. That lands the film with $260.6 million already after one weekend.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness slipped to second place with an estimated $16.4 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $370.8 million. Over the week, it added $36.8 million internationally, to bring that to $497.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $873.4 million. Will the film be able to cross the $1 billion mark before it’s done?

The Bob’s Burgers Movie debuted in third place with $12.6 million in its first weekend. The film has grossed $15 million so far. Internationally, things were a bit less with just $7,000. That puts the film a little over $15 million after 1 week.

Downton Abbey: A New Era slipped to fourth place with an estimated $5.9 million to bring its domestic gross to $30.1 million. The film earned about $4.8 million over the week internationally to bring that to $40.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $70.6 million.

The Bad Guys added about $4.6 million to its domestic total which now stands at $82.9 million. Over the week, the film earned about $8.4 million internationally to bring that to $116.2 million. The film has grossed $199.1 million so far in its run.

In comic film news…

Morbius looks like its domestic run is winding down. It earned just $170,00 over the week to bring its domestic gross to $73.3 million. Internationally, the film looks like it remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.3 million (about a trillion Morbinbucks).

The Batman earned a little domestically, about $100,000. It’s total is now $369.3 million. Over the week, the movie earned about $700,000 internationally to bring that total to $399.9 million. The film currently stands at $769.2 million.

Initial numbers have 45 films earning $177,186,698 from 30,523 theaters. That’s over double last weekend’s 48 films which earned $75,614,309 from 31,704 theaters. It’s one of the strongest weekends so far in 2022. The average earning was $5,805.02 this past weekend, over double the previous weekend’s $2,385.01.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was in first place for the third weekend in a row earning an estimated $31.6 million. That’s a drop of 48.8% from the previous weekend and lifted the film to $342.1 million domestically. Internationally, the film earned $64.9 million over the week to bring its gross to $461.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $803.2 million after just 3 weeks. The original Doctor Strange earned $677.8 million worldwide in 2016.

In second place was Downton Abbey: A New Era, the follow up to the 2019 feature film. It earned a little over $16 million in its first weekend domestically and grossed $35.7 million internationally. Worldwide, the film has grossed $51.7 million.

The Bad Guys slipped to third place adding $6.1 million to its domestic total. It has now earned $74.4 million after five weeks. Over the week, the film grossed about $8.5 million to bring its international total to $107.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $182.2 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 slipped one spot to come in fourth. The film grossed a little over $3.9 million to bring its domestic total to a little over $181 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $14.5 million internationally to bring that to $194 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a bit over $375 million.

Men debuted and wrapped up the top five with about $3.3 million domestically. International numbers have not been returned.

In comic film news…

Morbius looks like its domestic run is winding down. It earned just $350,00 over the week to bring its domestic gross to $73.1 million. Internationally, the film looks like it remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.1 million.

The Batman remained steady domestically with $369.2 million. Over the week, the movie earned about $1.2 million internationally to bring that total to $399.2 million. The film currently stands at $768.5 million. It’ll be interesting to see how much more it can earn with its streaming release though international grosses are really driving things.

Initial numbers have 48 films earning $75,614,309 from 31,704 theaters. That’s a slight dip from last weekend’s 44 films which earned $91,685,415 from 29,386 theaters. The average earning was $2,385.01 this past weekend, down a bit from the previous weekend’s $3,120.04.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was in first place again this past weekend earning an estimated $61 million. That lifts the film to about $291.9 million domestically after two weeks. Internationally, the film grossed about $131.2 million over the week to bring that to $396.2 million. That has brought the film to just under $688.1 million after two weeks.

Domestically, the film dropped 67.5% over the past week’s earnings which could mean a few things. The large opening frontloaded the film and the hardcore individuals saw it and didn’t go for a second viewing. The film also had a bit of mixed reviews, so it could be negative reviews that caused it. Either way, it should be interesting to see how the film does from here and what the legs are especially as more blockbusters start rolling out.

In second place was The Bad Guys which earned $6.9 million to bring its domestic total to $66.3 million. Internationally, the film added about $8.7 million over the week to bring that to $99.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $165.6 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues to do well adding $4.6 million to its domestic total to bring that to $175.7 million. Its international total held steady at $179.5 million bringing its worldwide gross to $355.2 million.

Firestarter debuted in fourth with an estimated anemic $3.8 million. The film also opened digitally on streaming services as well so there could be impact from that. Internationally, the film also earned about $2.1 million delivering an opening of $5.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was Everything Everywhere All at Once which had a small drop earning $3.3 million to bring its domestic total to $47.1 million. Internationally, the film added around $800,000 to that total over the week to bring it to $4.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $51.8 million.

The Batman earned about $100,000 over the week to bring that film’s domestic total to $369.2 million. Over the week, the movie earned about $2.5 million internationally to bring that total to $398 million. The film currently stands at $767.2 million. It’ll be interesting to see how much more it can earn with its streaming release though international grosses are really driving things.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was the champion of the weekend with an impressive $185 million opening. That puts the film already third in the year for domestic grosses. Internationally, the film has also grossed $265 million delivering $450 million already!

The first film earned $232.6 million domestically and $445.2 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $677.8 million 2016. It opened with $85.1 million.

The film has had mixed reviews from audiences so it should be very interesting to see what legs this one has.

In second place was The Bad Guys which earned $9.8 million, a 39.8% drop from the previous week. Domestically, the film has grossed $57.6 million after two weeks. Over the past week the film earned about $16.3 million internationally to lift that to $90.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $148.1 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came in third place with an estimated $6.2 million to lift its domestic gross to $169.9 million. Over the week, it earned $16.9 million to bring its international earnings to $179.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $349.4 million blowing away the original’s $319.7 million and guaranteeing more sequels to come.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore continues to slide seeing another 52.5% drop and earning a little under $4 million. That brings its domestic total to $86 million. It’s now a question if the film will cross $100 million domestically. Internationally, the film has had more luck earning another $27.7 million over the week to bring that to $277.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $363.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was Everything Everywhere All at Once which earned another $3.3 million to bring its domestic total to $41.6 million. Over the week, it earned around $1.2 million to bring its international total to $3.9 million. Worldwide, it has grossed $45.4 million.

Morbius comes to Digital in May and 4K/Blu-Ray in June

SONY Pictures has announced that Morbius is coming to digital on May 17 and 4K UHD, Blu-Ray, and DVD on June 14.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the film was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It stars Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.

From Marvel and SONY, Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came in second place with an estimated $11.4 million to bring its domestic gross to $160.9 million. At the international box office, the film grossed $20.6 million to bring that total to $162.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $323.5 million continuing the film’s success and making it one of the most successful comic based films ever. The film has grossed more than the original which debuted in 2020.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore held on to third place with an estimated $8.3 million. After three weeks, the film has grossed $79.6 million. Over the week, the film earned about $36.8 million to bring it to $250 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $329.6 million.

The Northman was in fourth place with an estimated $6.3 milloin to bring its domestic total to $22.8 million. Internationally, the film earned about $7.3 million over the week to bring that to $18.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $41.6 million.

Everything Everywhere All at Once saw a bit of a bump from the previous week as positive word of mouth gets around moving into fifth place earning $5.5 million and bringing its total domestic gross to $35.5 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $2.7 million to bring a worldwide total of $38.2 million.

Morbius dropped another 35% to be on the edge of the top 10. It grossed $1.5 million to bring its domestic total to $71.5 million. Internationally, the film earned about $2.9 million over the week to bring that to $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $161.5 million.

The Batman earned $775,000 million over the weekend to bring that film’s domestic total to $368.9 million. Over the week, the movie earned about $4.9 million internationally to bring that total to $391.5 million. The film currently stands at $760.4 million. The Bad Guys opened up in first place this past weekend earning an estimated $24 million. Internationally, the film has earned $63.1 million for a worldwide total of $87.1 million. Family films have had long legs this year and it’ll be interesting to see how well this one does as time goes on.

In second place was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The film held on to the spot and with estimated $15.2 million. Its domestic total so far is $145.8 million. Internationally, the film has kept up the pace and added $29.8 million over the week to lift that total to $142 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $287.8 million. The original film earned just under $149 million domestically, $170.7 million internationally for a worldwide total of $319.7 million. Also impacted by COVID, Paramount is likely happy to see how the sequel is doing.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore tumbled from last week’s first place. The film earned an estimated $14 million, dropping 66.8%. Domestically, the film has earned $67.1 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film is doing better. Over the week, it earned $68.2 million to bring that total to $213.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $280.3 million.

The Northman debuted in fourth place with an estimated $12 million. Internationally, the film earned a similar total with $11.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $23.5 million.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is another debut, taking fifth place. Domestically the film earned $7.2 million and internationally $2.4 million. That brings a worldwide total of $9.6 million.
