SONY’s Madame Web is a new low but how does it compare to the Spider-Man franchise?

Madame Web opened this past week to brutal reviews and a brutal box office. It was a low for SONY’s Spider-Man franchise which overall, is more successful than is given credit. But, how does it compare? Which films rank the highest? We crunched the numbers.

  • Numbers have been gathered and presented “raw” and not adjusted
  • There’s also an adjusted amount that uses a US inflation calculator
  • Worldwide totals are then also adjusted using the US inflation calculator giving a rough estimate
  • COVID lockdowns went into place in 2020 greatly impacting the box office and theaters which have yet to recover fully
  • The highest amount is in bold

Overall, the SONY Spider-Man franchise has been a solid one grossing just under $976 million per film worldwide adjusted for inflation, but, beyond the clear Marvel tie-ins the newest era of releases has been all over. For every Venom there’s a Morbius. And even praised films like the award winning animated films took a bit to find its audience.

Feel The Chill as Werewolf By Night and Morbius Enter Marvel Contest of Champions

A month full of thrills and chills looms ahead as Kabam unveiled two new Champions to its popular mobile fighter MARVEL Contest of Champions – man by day and Werewolf By Night joins along with the living vampire, Morbius! Players can watch the two prowl the night and lurk in the shadows as they battle it out in an all-new Champion Reveal Trailer “Champions of the Damned.” With over 250 Champions in The Contest, players can also add other classic Super Heroes and Villains from Blade and Man-Thing to Elsa Bloodstone and more.

This month also brings many treats as Kabam prepares to host their first-ever LIVE fan celebration event and tournament – Battlerealm Brawl – taking place in the Vancouver area at The Gaming Stadium (Richmond, BC) on October 20 and 21! Fans can acquire tickets for free to attend in person or tune into Kabam’s Twitch as they Livestream the tournament that weekend.

Here is a quick look at what The Contest has in store this month:

Something runs afoul in The Battlerealm swamp! Join Midnight Sons veterans Blade and Elsa Bloodstone as they investigate disappearances linked to the quagmire landscape. Meet with WEREWOLF BY NIGHT and a cast of monstrous curiosities as the mysteries of the wetlands reveal themselves and the diabolical machinations of the maligned genius MORBIUS begin to come into focus. Can this team expose the truth and put to rest the chaos manifesting itself and rescue those who have been wronged by the Living Vampire?

CHARACTER BIOS

Upon inheriting the curse of lycanthropy on his 18th birthday, Jack Russell began his lifelong struggle with his werewolf alter-ego. Always pursued by beast hunters, criminals and other creatures alike, Jack regularly fights against those who seek to control his werewolf persona for their own purposes. Over time, Jack came to accept the beast within him and gained the ability to transform at will, only feeling the urge to transform on night of the full moon, thus becoming the Werewolf By Night.

In a hopeless attempt to cure his rare blood disease, Dr. Michael Morbius mutated himself with vampire bat DNA only to become a bloodthirsty pseudo-Vampire. Now he must fight a losing battle to overcome his insatiable desire to drink blood, which sustains his powerful monstrous form.

Set your reminders! Werewolf By Night arrives in-game on Oct. 12 and Morbius on Oct. 26. In the meantime, players can now see the two battle it out in the all-new Champion Reveal trailer and catch up on The Battlerealm with character Deep Dive and Special Moves content on the official MARVEL Contest of Champions YouTube channel.

Other Marvel Contest of Champions updates, including bug fixes, balance updates, Halloween themed events including My Little Symbiote, Blood Moon, and more can be found HERE.

Minions: The Rise of Gru dominates the weekend box office

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Morbius is finally staked at the box office. The film’s domestic gross is $73.9 million. Internationally, the film remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.9 million (about a trillion Morbinbucks).

Initial numbers has 49 films earning $190,125,476 from 27,735 theaters. That’s almost 50% more than last weekend’s 51 films which earned $134,591,010 from 26,066 theaters. It’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $6,855.07 this past weekend, an increase from the previous weekend’s $5,163.47.

Top Gun: Maverick returns to first inching ahead of Elvis

Top Gun Maverick

Update: Elvis topped Top Gun after adjusted numbers with $31.2 million compared to $29.6 million.

Top Gun: Maverick had a hell of a week returning to first place at the weekend box office based on initial numbers. It had an estimated gross of a little over $30.5 million to bring its domestic total to $521.7 million. With the film’s international gross of $484.7 million, the movie has grossed over $1.006 billion worldwide.

Elvis opened up in second place with an even $30.5 million. Internationally, the film grossed $20 million delivering an opening weekend of $50.5 million.

Jurassic World Dominion slipped to third place grossing $26.4 million to bring its domestic total to $302.8 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $71.5 million at the international box office. There it has now grossed $443.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $746.7 million.

In comic film news…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came in sixth place earning $1.7 million and bringing its domestic total to $409.2 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $537.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $947 million. The film is inching towards $1 billion, will it cross the line?

Morbius is finally staked at the box office. The film’s domestic gross is $73.9 million. Internationally, the film remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.9 million (about a trillion Morbinbucks).

Initial numbers has 51 films earning $134,591,010 from 26,066 theaters. That’s a slight dip from last weekend’s 53 films which earned $164,517,369 from 22,357 theaters. Still, it’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $5,163.47 this past weekend, slightly less than the previous weekend’s $7,358.65.

Jurassic World: Dominion continues to devour as Lightyear barely launches

Jurassic World: Dominion

It’s no surprise that Jurassic World: Dominion was once again atop the box office. The film earned an estimated $58.7 million lifting its domestic gross to $249.8 million. Over the week, the film also grossed $126.6 million at the international box office. There it has grossed $372.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $622.2 million after two weeks at the box office. Will it cross the billion mark like previous films? We’ll have to wait and see but it’ll be a fight to get there.

In second place was Lightyear which debuted with $51 million. Many on the culture war right are pointing to the amount as a rejection of “woke” Disney and the lack of Tim Allen. Allen has a show coming up on Disney+ and the film’s Buzz, voiced by Chris Evans, is a different Buzz than from Toy Story. The likely issue is, who is the film for? Those who grew up on Toy Story are adults now and kids have no connection to the character. Add in a new Jurassic Park and Top Gun and it’s a competition for nostalgia at theaters. It’s an odd choice for a theatrical release as a whole. Internationally, the film grossed $34.6 million to deliver a worldwide total of $85.6 million.

Top Gun: Maverick continues to the danger zone adding an estimated $44 million to its domestic total bringing that to $466.2 million. Over the week, the film also grossed $65.3 million internationally to bring that to $885.2 million.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came in fourth place earning $4.2 million and bringing its domestic total to $405.1 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $5 million internationally to bring that to $942.5 million. The film is inching towards $1 billion, will it cross the line?

Rounding out the top five was The Bob’s Burgers Movie an estimated $1.1 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $29.8 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $260,000 over the week to bring that to $2.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $31.8 million.

In comic film news…

Morbius is finally staked at the box office. The film’s domestic gross is $73.9 million. Internationally, the film remained steady with $90 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $163.9 million (about a trillion Morbinbucks).

The Batman looks like it remained steady domestically having earned $369.3 million. Internationally the film looks like it has ended its run and now stands at $401 million. The film currently stands at $770.3 million.

Initial numbers have 53 films earning $164,517,369 from 22,357 theaters. That’s a dip of about 25% from last weekend’s 51 films which earned $214,836,326 from 25,815 theaters. Still, it’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $7,358.65 this past weekend, slightly less than the previous weekend’s $8,322.15.

At the international box office, the film did even better grossing $245.8 million delivering a worldwide gross of $389.1 million its opening weekend.
