Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore debuted in first place earning $43 million domestically. That’s far below the first film’s $74.4 million and second’s $62.2 million openings. It’s possible the franchise is showing wear for a whole host of reasons and it should be interesting to see Warner Bros. direction for the franchise when this film wraps up its run. Internationally, the film has been open for a bit in some countries and has earned $150.4 million delivering a worldwide total of $193.4 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 dropped to second place adding $30 million to its total to bring its domestic earnings to $119.6 million. The international total has been keeping pace and over the week added about $40.2 million to bring that to $112.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $231.8 million.

The Lost City held on to third place adding $6.5 million to its total. Domestically, the film has grossed $78.6 million. The international total has remained unchanged at $9.7 million for a worldwide gross of $88.3 million.

Everything Everywhere All at Once expanded its theaters and earnings grossing $6.2 million. Domestically, the film has earned $17.7 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $370,466. Worldwide the film has brought in $18.1 million.

Father Stu debuted in fifth place with $5.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $8.1 million so far. There’s no international gross reported.

In comic film news…

Morbius continues to tank dropping another 53.9%. The film is out of the top five in its third week going from 2nd to sixth. It grossed $4.7 million to bring its domestic total to $65.1 million. Internationally, the film earned about $12 million over the week to bring that to $81.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $146.4 million.

The Batman debuts on HBO Max this coming week so we’ll see the impact of that on its grosses this coming week. The film earned $3.8 million over the weekend to bring that film’s domestic total to $365 million. Over the week, the movie earned about $10 million internationally to bring that total to $386.1 million. That means the film has crossed the $750 million mark and stands at $751.1 million. It’ll be interesting to see how much more it can earn with its streaming release.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is winding down its release and earned $200,000 over the weekend. The film now stands at $804.2 million. The international total hasn’t moved and remains at $1.088 billion. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.892 billion.

Initial numbers have 39 films earning $106,816,331 from 29,728 theaters. That’s a slight decrease from last weekend’s 45 films which earned $117,836,315 from 28,596 theaters theaters. The average earning was $3,593.12 this past weekend, a decrease from the previous weekend’s $4,120.73.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Runs Into First while Morbius Tanks

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 took the top of the box office with an impressive $71 million. Its international gross was about the same with $70 million. That means the film earned an impressive $141 million its first weekend.

That improves upon the original film which opened with a little over $58 million domestically and went on to earn a little under $149 million domestically and $170.7 million internationally for a total of $319.7 million worldwide.

Morbius dropped 73.9% in its second week and earned $10.2 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $57.1 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film earned $24.4 million over the week to lift that total to $69.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $126.4 million.

The Lost City came in third place earning $9.2 million domestically in its third week. The film has grossed $68.9 million domestically so far. Over the week, the film grossed $2.7 million internationally to bring that total to $9.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $78.6 million.

Ambulance debuted in fourth place with $8.7 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $22.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $31.2 million.

The Batman rounded out the top five with $6.6 million to bring its domestic total to $359.1 million. Over the week, the film grossed around $14.6 million internationally to lift its total to $376.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $735.2 million.

In comic film news…

Spider-Man: No Way Home came in eighth place as the film is also available digitally. Even with that, the movie earned $625,000 to lift its domestic total to $803.8 million. Internationally the total remained around $1.088 billion delivering a worldwide total of $1.892 billion.

Initial numbers have 45 films earning $117,836,315 from 28,596 theaters. That’s about a 50% increase from last weekend’s 48 films which earned $79,538,682 from 30,544 theaters theaters. The average earning was $4,120.73 this past weekend, an increase from the previous weekend’s $2,604.07.

Morbius Takes the Top of the Weekend Box Office

Morbius was the top film this past weekend with an estimated $39.1 million. Internationally, the film earned $44.9 million delivering a worldwide total of $84 million.

The Lost City slipped one spot to second place. The film added an estimated $14.8 million to its total to bring that to $54.6 million. Over the week, the film added $3.3 million to its international total to bring that to $7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $61.6 million after two weeks.

The Batman dipped one spot to third earning an estimated $10.8 million. The film has now grossed $349 million domestically. Over the week, the film grossed about $20.6 million to bring its international total to $361.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $710.5 million.

Uncharted held on to fourth place earning an estimated $3.6 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $138.9 million. Over the week, the film grossed $10.3 million to bring its international total to $234.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $373.1 million.

Rounding out the top five was Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie which held the spot again. It earned just under $2 million to bring its domestic total to $29.7 million. Over the week, the film earned $2.5 million internationally to lift that to $119.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $149.1 million.

In comic film news…

Spider-Man: No Way Home came in seventh place as the film is also available digitally. Even with that, the movie earned $1.4 million to lift its domestic total to $802.7 million. Internationally the total remained around $1.088 billion delivering a worldwide total of $1.891 billion.

The King’s Man didn’t chart this past week and its domestic gross remains steady at $37.2 million. Internationally the film remained steady at $88.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $125.9 million.

Initial numbers have 48 films earning $79,538,682 from 30,544 theaters. That’s a bit of a decrease from last weekend’s 56 films which earned $82,009,108 from 39,845 theaters theaters. The average earning was $2,604.07 this past weekend, an increase from the previous weekend’s $2,058.20.

The Morbius Trailer Delivers Loads of Teasers

The official trailer for Morbius is here. Based on the Marvel character, the film is part of Sony Pictures‘ greater plan for its line of Spider-Man films.

The film delivers a lot of hints and teasers towards other films including “that thing that happened in San Francisco,” a reference to Venom, a quick view of Michael Keaton who plays the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and pictures of Spider-Man in the background.

Morbius debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #101 in 1971 and was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. The character has been both a hero and villain in the Marvel Universe.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Tyrese Gibson, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, and Michael Keaton. It comes to theaters January 2022.

Morbius Moved to 2021 While an Unannounced Marvel Film is in Limbo

Sony has shifted the release dates for some of its upcoming movies. They Jared Leto starring Morbius, based on the Marvel Comics’ character, is being pushed to 2021. All of Sony’s changes are due to the spread of the coronavirus/COVID-19.

The film was to be released on July 31, 2020 and will now be released March 19, 2021. The movie is the second expansion of Sony’s Spider-Man film universe.

An untitled Sony/Marvel film was also to be released on October 8, 2021 but now has no release date.

Virtually all of Sony’s movies were moved out of 2020.
