Hopeless Savages Break to Receive New Release Date

Oni Press has announced a new release date for the next chapter in the Hopeless Savages series. Hopeless Savages Break will now release in November 2015. Originally slated for August, the title’s release date has shifted due to a production delay.

Hopeless Savages Break continues the story of fan-favorite protagonist Zero and her punk rock family. Zero finds herself in college and thoroughly hating it, though an upcoming tour with her band The Dusted Bunnies promises to rejuvenate her spirits. But when a rival band threatens to end the tour early, and without her family, Zero is in no position to fight back.

Something Wicked This Way Comes to Archaia in Toil and Trouble

Archaia, an imprint of publisher BOOM! Studios, invites readers to look behind the scenes of Shakespeare’s Macbeth to see who wields the real power in the new, original limited series Toil and Trouble. Mairghread Scott and debut artists Kelly and Nichole Matthews reinvent the famous tragedy by putting the power in the hands of the three witches as they control the destiny of a king and the fate of Scotland.

The three Fates—Riata, Cait, and Smertae—have always been guiding and protecting Scotland unseen, indirectly controlling the line of kings according to the old religion. When there is a disagreement in the sisterhood, Riata and Smertae will use men as pawns, and Smertae will direct Macbeth to a crown he was never meant to have.

Toil and Trouble #1 (of 6) (formerly The Third Witch) arrives in comic shops on September 2nd with a main cover by Kyla Vanderklugt for the price of $3.99 under Diamond order code JUL151089. Also available in a limited quality is a 10 Years incentive cover by Meredith McClaren, and a retailer incentive cover by Haemi Jang.

Oni Announces Hopeless Savages: Break

Oni Press announced today Hopeless Savages: Break, a new chapter in the Hopeless Savages story, by original series creator Jen Van Meter and artist Meredith McClaren, featuring art by original series artist Christine Norrie. Hopeless Savages: Break will release on August 12th, 2015.

Hopeless Savages: Break continues the story of fan favorite protagonist Zero and her punk rock family. Zero finds herself in college and thoroughly hating it, though an upcoming tour with her band The Dusted Bunnies promises to rejuvenate her spirits. A rival band threatens to end the tour early, and without her family, Zero is in no position to fight back. Meanwhile, the rest of the Hopeless-Savages are dealing with their own problems, including babies, contracts and drug addictions. If there’s one family who can pull it all off, it’s this one.

In a release, Van Meter said:

The first Hopeless-Savages story came out in 2000. Fifteen years! And for every one of them, I’ve been so grateful for the support of Oni Press and the work of every one of the many amazing artists who’ve helped me bring this family to life. It took a really, really long time to write Break–largely for personal reasons; I was growing up along with the characters, and I felt a disconnect I couldn’t articulate. When James Lucas Jones–doing what a great editor does–suggested I run toward that, I finally found the emotional center for this story; then Meredith McClaren came aboard and brought beautiful storytelling, great instincts about the characters, and a wonderful sense of humor, making everything I wrote a thousand times better.  The icing on the cake, for me, was when Christine Norrie was able to make time to do the flashback sequences; she’s been with me, Zero, Twitch and the rest of the family since the beginning, and I’m thrilled she was able to continue on this strange road trip with us.

Explore a clockwork city in Hinges

New to Image Comics this February, comes Meredith McClaren’s enchanting fantasy Hinges.

Written and drawn by McClaren, the graphic novel introduces the nuts and bolts of a city called Cobble, where one girl new to the city, Orio, must depend on help wherever she can find it. Her assigned familiar, Bauble, has his own agenda however. As the two explore the walls of the city, they find they are not the only new arrivals.

Visually, McClaren had thought about creating a world inhabited by dolls, puppets, and stuffed animals for a few years before a story was even attached to the idea. “Later on I came to Orio, and her growth. The idea of working with dolls meant I could explore a person’s development into an individual (from a completely blank slate to a fully realized person) on a much more expedient track then watching a character physically grow up.”

The world in Hinges acts as a character in and of itself in many ways. McClaren added: “I also wanted to play with a world that had a lot of ambiguity. When I look back at the stories I love—the ones that tend to have a more enduring presence—I always come back to the type of stories where the audience isn’t given the full explanation but rather a great big sandbox of a world that they can also play with. It’s been my observation that the stories people enjoy most are the ones in which they feel they can also participate. I wanted to give my audience that kind of experience. I love it when my audience starts to develop their own theories for why the world of Hinges is the way it is. And I would be ridiculously pleased should some of them find their own stories to tell there.”

Hinges Book One: Clockwork City (ISBN: 978-1-63215-253-4) hits shelves on 2/25 and will be available for $15.99. It can be pre-ordered by retailers from Diamond Book Distributors with Diamond Code DEC140649.
