Wonder Woman ’77 Signing at Golden Apple Comics

ii_155271be705cbe91To celebrate the release of Wonder Woman ‘77 Vol. 1, writer Marc Andreyko, artist Cat Staggs and artist Matt Haley will be signing copies for fans at Golden Apple Comics on Saturday, June 11 at 1 p.m.

Based on the fan-favorite 1977 Wonder Woman TV series starring Lynda Carter, the Digital First comic series follows the undercover Amazon Princess as she joins forces with special agent Steve Trevor to defend America against Cold War-era criminals. A search for an escaped Soviet scientist brings Wonder Woman to the hottest disco of the day, Studio 52, where a live stage act might prove more of a threat to Wonder Woman than the Russian Roller Derby girls out to bring the scientist home. This new title collects Wonder Woman ’77 Special #1-2.

A purchase of Wonder Woman ’77 Vol. 1 is required to attend. Fans are encouraged to line up early as space will be limited and is on a first come, first serve basis.

Shaft by Walker and Evely

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the signing of writer David F. Walker and artist Bilquis Evely to its upcoming Shaft comic book, based on the hard-hitting detective created by novelist Ernest Tidyman and popularized in films featuring Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson. Slated for release in December, Shaft #1 celebrates the 45th anniversary of an American icon with a wealth of cover art options by industry talents including Francesco Francavilla, Michael Avon Oeming, Ulises Farinas, Matt Haley, Sanford Greene, and a landmark collaboration between Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz.

John Shaft, described as a “tough, take-no-guff detective” and “private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks” in composer/singer Isaac Hayes’ Oscar-winning Theme from Shaft, has gone toe-to-toe with organized crime bosses, stood up to the cops, squared off against kidnappers, and foiled assassination attempts in his novel and film appearances. But who was John Shaft before he became the hardboiled investigator with a reputation as big as New York City itself? For the first time ever, the detective’s origins are explored, courtesy of the new series by Dynamite Entertainment.

Review – Witchblade Annual 2010

Witchblade Annual 2010Let me first say I love the retro-propaganda like poster on the cover of this annual (pictured right).  Normally when I hear an annual is coming out I roll my eyes as they add very little to the ongoing comic and are usually sub-par to the monthly regular dose.  Well, Witchblade Annual 2010 is the exception to that.

Witchblade 15th Anniversary Issue!
Sara Pezzini comes face to face with a former Witchblade bearer, a Russian soldier who served during the frozen Siege of Stalingrad, a pivotal battle in World War II. What tale does she have to tell Sara? Witchblade bearers past and present come together in a one-of-a-kind story, with amazing art by New York Times bestselling illustrator Tony Shasteen (The Talisman).

The comic is written by Ron Marz with his usual skill (seriously, I need to get a thesaurus to continue to praise him).  There’s three stories with the first and last sticking out.  The main body of the comic is Sara Pezzini meeting a former bearer of the Witchblade.  The story mostly takes place in World War II and I really dug it.  It adds some depth and is a bit somber, somehow fitting the holiday season.  The second comic interlude I could have really done without.  It doesn’t add much at all, but gave me a bit of a laugh.

The third story is straight up prose.  The Devil’s Due by Matthew Dow Smith is a murder mystery worthy of Law and Order.  It’s a lot of reading and was a bit jarring for me, someone who doesn’t read straight text quite as easily as I do when visuals are added in.

Normally I’d say steer clear of annuals, but Witchblade Annual 2010 is one to definitely pick up.  A great comic for Witchblade fans and those just looking for a good read alike.
