Relive the Terror in Michael Alan Nelson’s Fall of Cthulhu Omnibus

BOOM! Studios invites you to experience the apocalypse all over again with the collected edition of Fall of Cthulhu Omnibus from acclaimed horror writer Michael Alan Nelson. This 600-plus-page omnibus collects each of The Fall of Cthulhu volumes, including The Fugue, The Gathering, The Gray Man (which features the first appearance of Lucifer, star of Nelson’s new ongoing series Hexed), GodWar, Apocalypse, and Nemesis. Nelson, alongside artists Greg Scott, Mateus Santolouco, Mark Dos Santos, and more, created the first epic story for BOOM! Studios and is being reprinted in one grand collector’s edition for the first time. Nelson’s epic was hailed by Leverage creator John Rogers as “the definitive Cthulhu in graphic novel format.” Never before has H.P. Lovecraft’s world been presented in such an expansive and complex way.  now by then.

Fall of Cthulhu Omnibus arrives from BOOM! Studios in comic shops on October 29th with a cover illustrated by Tyler Walpole and a cover price of $39.99 under Diamond Order Code AUG141165.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #21-28, City Fall

TMNT_ongo_22-pr-1_ee9efOccasionally, popular long-running comic series with a traditionally younger following get stuck in mediocrity, and it takes a brilliant creative team and a mature concept to elevate it to exceptional. Afterlife with Archie is a hallmark example. City Fall is another. Including issue #21, the prologue, City Fall is an eight-issue story arc in IDW‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continuity that revolves around Shredder’s diabolical plan to take over the city’s warring criminal factions and crush the turtles. What begins with an attack on Casey Jones and Raphael by the Foot Clan, ends with Leonardo’s abduction…all of which is according to plan. Once in captivity, the recently resurrected Kitsune uses her dark magic to invade Leo’s mind and turn him against his loved ones. Can Splinter get back his sage leader or will his family be ripped apart his sworn enemies (which includes a mutant warthog and rhinoceros)?

Writer Tom Waltz‘s script stays on point the entire length of the arc. With the story assist from Bobby Curnow and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, Waltz is able to keep scenes tense, pacing fluid, and action fierce. Unfortunately, they are partial to a comic pet peeve of mine. While not as detestable as another peeve of mine, the entire plot in one sentence trick, I am oddly averse to the in-story captions that reference other story lines (i.e. “See Michelangelo Microseries”). These books are littered with them.

Artist Mateus Santolouco captures the modern essence of the turtles. He could have settled on childish, gimmicky heroes, but instead went for muscular, adult characters up against equally matured villains. My only complaint is not what Santolouco did, but what he failed to do. The bottom panel on the final page of Part Three shows a grief-stricken Splinter holding Leo’s blue bandana in front of a glowing cityscape. Why was that not made into a full page?! As one of the most iconic images in the entire story arc, it should have been capitalized on.

While City Fall‘s predecessor issues are by no means mediocre, this story arc brought the TMNT series out of the status quo and into the well-earned limelight. I’m ashamed to admit I had forgotten that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles preceded my childhood–now lifelong–love affair with Batman. This story arc, and series as a whole, brought it all back. Eastman, Waltz, and Santolouco take the iconic reptilian protagonists to a whole ‘nother level and have set the standard for issues to come.

Zero Delves into the Effects of War

In an interview, writer Ales Kot has said:

War is a disease, and it seems that a large part of humanity is obsessed with it.

The writer of comics that range from the stream-of-consciousness apocalyptic tale Change to DC Comics’ Suicide Squad draws on this point of view, developed in his native Czech Republic, for his new series Zero, out from Image Comics in September.

I’ve seen, first-hand, what kind of damage war inflicts on people, and how often the wounds become obscured as the decades progress.

Zero is named for its main character, secret agent Edward Zero, a sociopath who solves problems with violence, a perfect execution machine. He’s built his life around certain principles, but ZERO is the story of what happens when his carefully maintained systems break down and Zero must fight not just a war out in the world but one within himself as well.

Each issue will end with this internal struggle producing an indelible change in Zero, and so each issue will be drawn by a different artist. The first issue, in which Zero encounters a bioengineered terrorist whose body is a bomb, is drawn by Michael Walsh, who previously worked on the time travel Image series Comeback, written by Ed Brisson.

Subsequent issues will be drawn by comics stars like Mateus Santolouco, Morgan Jeske, Tradd Moore, and Tonci Zonjic. Kot will write each issue based on the strengths of the artist, and the series will be colored by Jordie Bellaire.

Zero #1 is available for pre-order in the July issue of Previews (Diamond code JUL130415). Variant covers by Becky Cloonan (JUL130416) and Chris Burnham (JUL130417) are also available for pre-order.

Review: Dial H Vol. 1: Into You

dial h volume 1 coverIn Dial H Vol. 1: Into You, a troubled young man, Nelson, stumbles upon a lost H-Dial and all the power it possesses. But when the world is threatened by the very device that has become his obsession, he is taken on a wild adventure exploring the boundaries of reality itself. The series is written by Hugo award-winning novelist China Miéville with art by Mateus Santolouco, David Lapham, Riccardo Burchielli and Brian Bolland.

The series is supposed to look at the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers and becomes a hero. He gains a powerful artifact, which can turn one into almost any superhero imaginable.

And that’s the fun of the series. I think the look at the whole “psychological effects” is the minor part of the story. It doesn’t quite reach the level it should have in that exploration in this first volume. Instead, the entertainment and fun comes from the varied and wacky heroes that pop up throughout the story.

The first volume is fun. There’s a goofiness that’s entertaining, but every so often there’s a choppiness to the story that makes you wonder if you missed something. Overall, the story flows, but I felt like there could have been more explanation about this world and what’s going on.

The art is pretty solid as well. Some of it is fantastic, some of it is good, but overall there’s some great pages and panels that pepper the book. The biggest thing is that character design. With such crazy and varied characters, you can imagine how important that design is.

Dial H is a series that’s a bit different from the regular capes and tights. It gives a nice break from everything else that’s out there for fans of super hero comics, but want something slightly different.

The volume collects issues #0-6.
