Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Cabinet #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

The Cabinet #1 (Image Comics) – Atypical teen Avani and midwestern jock Trent teleport across a post-Cold War landscape to collect bizarre relics. Why? Well, because they need to summon the arcane powers of a resplendent 17th-century cabinet to fix a teeny-tiny mistake the last time Avani used it…

The Deviant #4 (Image Comics) – The series has been amazing horror. If you’re a fan of Silence of the Lambs, don’t miss this!

The Displaced #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A city has vanished without a trace and nobody remembers it or the 170,000 missing residents. That concepts alone has us intrigued.

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – New Matt Kindt? Yes please!

The Infernals #1 (Image Comics) – . Abraham “Abe” Morgenstern, the son of Satan, has one month to live. Before he dies, he must decide which of his three wayward children-volatile narcissist Nero, conflicted field operative Jackal, or troubled schoolgirl Bee-will inherit his shadowy empire. But will Abe ever be able to truly cede control of the Apocalypse?

Masterpiece #3 (Dark Horse Comics) – The series has been fantastic as far as a crime/heist story. The characters are great matched with amazing art.

Night Thrasher #1 (Marvel) – The classic character is getting the spotlight. While we’re not sure why, we’re down for more 90s nostalgia.

Red Hood: The Hill #1 (DC Comics) – Red Hood is back and we’re interested to see what happens in this series that has the character focused at the neighborhood level.

Sinister Sons #1 (DC Comics) – Super Sons was a great series so we’re hoping this evil version is just as entertaining.

Transformers #5 (Skybound) – All hail the Energon Universe!

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic and we’re hoping for more of that.

Wolverine #43 (Marvel) – The event so far has been brutal and we want to see more.

Masterpiece #2 continues to be a masterpiece

Masterpiece #2

Emma is a brilliant young woman whose life was just turned upside down by a billionaire who says that her long lost parents were in fact very famous thieves. They took the world’s most famous billionaire for a cool billion… before they disappeared never to be seen or heard from again. And now he wants revenge, from her. Follow Emma as she enters into the world her parents left behind and come face to face with the PARAGON. Masterpiece #2 adds so much to the series while keeping up the witty, and humorous, banter.

The first issue set things up, but Masterpiece #2 really focuses in an the mission ahead for Emma and debates if she should even partake. Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev, Masterpiece #2 continues the cool and fun of the first issue.

Bendis and Maleev put some of the spotlight on the Paragon while expanding Emma’s understanding of the world around her. Her parents are world class thieves but all she knows is their depiction through film, so part of the fun of Masterpiece #2 is the blending of fact and fiction. Another is the interactions of all of the characters, a clash of generations.

Alex Maleev’s art is as amazing as you’d expect. With color by Ian Herring and lettering by Joshua Reed, the comic makes even characters standing around and talking interesting. The body language and facial expressions tell so much of the story and what characters are thinking. There’s also fun with the fact and fiction, for instance the comparisons of the various crews and what’s needed.

Masterpiece #2 is just fantastic. It is packed with laughs, tension, that cool you want from a heist story, all with great art. This is another amazing hit from Bendis and Maleev and one that I already want to see on the big screen and continue any way possible.

Rise of the Powers of X #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Disney Villains: Cruella De Vil #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Cruella feels like she’s been maligned due to that whole dog thing… and that alone has us excited to check out this new series. Dynamite’s Disney Villains line has been excellent so far.

Jennifer Blood: Battle Diary #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Nazi punching. Nuff said.

Lunar New Year Love Story (First Second) – A new graphic novel where Gene Luen Yang is involved? Yeah, that’s an auto read and suggestion.

Masterpiece #2 (Dark Horse) – The first issue was fantastic, focusing on the daughter of two thieves and the person who wants revenge that they stole from.

Petrol Head #3 (Image Comics) – Great art. Interesting world. Just solid sci-fi.

Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe #1 (Titan Comics) – A tie-in to the Zack Snyder film. We’re told it’s a must read if you’re interested in the film.

Rise of the Powers of X #1 (Marvel) – It’s the fall of Krakoa and the X-Men fighting back in this second main series that will lead into what’s next for the Marvel line. Here’s hoping this series kicks off a bit better than Fall of the House of X which left us… wanting.

Transformers #4 (Skybound) – The series has been planting its flag in how it wants to stand out from what has come before while at the same time honoring what has come before.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – The first ongoing series to launch out of the new Ultimate Universe. We’re excited to see how it stands out and differs from what has come before and what’s currently going on in the 616.

Wolverine #41 (Marvel) – We’ve been promised a brutal fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth!

Zorro: Man of the Dead #1 (Massive) – New Zorro from Sean Gordon Murphy? Yeah, we’re intrigued by this.

More than meets the 3rd party eye!

Fanstoys, a  Japanese 3rd party toy manufacture, has showed off their latest “Iron Dibots“figure. This one’s official name is Soar, but we all know it’s Swoop. For OBVIOUS legal reasons they can’t call it Swoop, mention Dinobots, Transformers, or anything else that would bring a truck load of lawyers down upon them but the figure kinda speaks for itself. With a great design in both robot and dino-mode, this figure would fit really well in any Masterpiece collection. Swoo….I mean Soar is available in both red and blue paint decos for those who prefer the original toy or the show colour scheme.

Fans-Toys-Transformer-Soar-Not-Swoop-5

This is the 2nd Dinosaur themed transforming robot from Fanstoys. The first being Scoria, or “not Slag”. With this image released, it looks like Fanstoys does plan to make the entire classic line-up in their Iron Dibots series. Which means we’ll see a “King” T-Rex eventually. I have the Masterpiece Grimlock (Hasbro release) and I love that figure, the only problem is the size. Grimlock is a little too small in my opinion and the Fanstoys versions look to be a little beefier in size, so hopefully their T-Rex will follow suit.

If you’re interested in adding either Soar or Scoria to your collection, hop on over to your favoutire online toy retailer and lock in a pre-order. These beauties are selling for around $200 but that will only go up on the secondary market. I’ve never taken the the plunge into 3rd party figures before but these may be a great place to start.
