Pick(s) of the Week: Sandman: Overture #1 and many more…

Sandman 2013 PromoTwenty-five years since The Sandman changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman’s legendary series is back!

The Sandman: Overture heralds Gaiman’s return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III, whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman’s origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, The Sandman: Overture will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King’s siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny. This is the first issue of a 6-issue, bimonthly miniseries features a stunning double-page interior foldout.

Really, was there any doubt this would be our pick? Gaiman’s return is huge news, especially to this crossover success.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

Brett:

Top Pick: Sandman: Overture #1 (Vertigo) – Above says it all. This is a master writer returning to one of his biggest hits and bringing along one of the best artists out there right now.

Final Plague #3 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Perfect for Halloween, this series is beyond scary and creepy, it regularly gives me chills. The story features zombie rats and their rampage in a small town. Perfect in every sense.

The Fox #1 (Archie Comics) – Mark Waid and Dean Haspiel, that should be enough of a reason to pick up this series. The duo relaunches this classic character giving us fun action for the whole family.

Wild Blue Yonder #3 (IDW Puplishing) – I love this new series from IDW which has air pirates, dog fights and a look and feel that’s just amazing. One of my favorite new series this year.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2 (Marvel) – Don’t you want to know how this event ends!?

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Mara (Image Comics) – The limited series from writer Brian Wood and artists Ming Doyle is collected. It’s a great meditation on celebrity as today’s icons and modern myths.

Scott:

Top Pick: Sandman: Overture #1 (Vertigo) – Wow. Where to begin, even? Twenty-five years since it’s debut, one of the premier literary/comic talents returns to one of the most inspired worlds ever created, and he’s brought one of the top artistic talents with him. I’m kind of freaking out here.

Saga #15 (Image Comics) – It’s Saga. I don’t know what else to say.

TPB/Graphic Novel Picks of the Week

Batman Vol. 3: Deeath of the Family (DC Comics) – Easily the best of Snyder’s Batman arcs, Death of the Family tells a story that will probably go down as one of the most important Joker stories ever told. Definitely pick this up.

Mara (Image Comics) – I only read the first issue, but it was so interesting, and Ming Doyle’s art was so incredibly physical, that I’ve been anxiously awaiting the trade ever since.

Picks of the Week: Age of Ultron #10 and 9 Other Picks

AOU2daysIt’s been a few short months and this Wednesday sees the wrap up of Marvel‘s first major event of 2013, Age of Ultron #10. The series as a whole has been uneven with some issues being filled with excellence and other issues barely readable. Overall the event has been unimpressive. But, here’s why this issue makes our “pick of the week.” Marvel has been hinting something big up their sleeves with this issue. We know the former Spawn character Angela will be making her appearance into the Marvel Universe, so there’s that. But, Marvel has been coy and hinting there’s even more to come.

We’ve seen teasers over the last few days, and one showed Wolverine over time, including the Ultimate Universe. You can see that on the left. Something big is coming and it begins here. That level of expectation will make or break this issue. But, if nothing else, it’s worth checking out to see how a former character from Spawn makes her way into the Marvel 616.

Here’s the rest of our choices in alphabetical order.

  • 100 Bullets: Brother Lono #1 – The acclaimed series is back, this time looking at one of the secondary characters.
  • Edison Ex – Monkeybrain’s comics go from digital to print!
  • Liberator #1 – One of two releases from Black Mask Studios this week. This one has to do with the heroes that defend animals.
  • Mara #5 – The amazing series that questions what a hero is in this age of commercialism and consumerism.
  • Occupy Comics #2 – The other release from Black Mask Studios continues the awesome series with a message. Shows how mixing politics and comics can be awesome!
  • Revival #11 – The zombie-ish series continues its amazing run. This is a series everyone should be reading. Gothic noir/horror at its best.
  • Transformers: Monstrosity #1 – The early days of the War on Cybertron!
  • Wild Blue Yonder #1 – A new sci-fi series from IDW. In the near future, mankind has destroyed the Earth, and the only refuge from radioactive pollution can be found in the skies. Unfortunately dwindling supplies and bloodthirsty air-pirates make life all the harder.
  • X-Files Season 10 #1 – The classic television series returns to comics!

The military is keen to co-opt Mara, now that her abilities are maturing, and they aren’t above using her soldier brother to convince her. They offer to “accept” her again, and she rightly rejects it for the crap that it is. Cut off not only from friends and family, but now from her country, where can she go now? Brian, Ming, and Jordie raise the stakes.

Pick of the Week: Revival #9 + 9 Other Comics

revival #9Revival is consistently one of the best comics on the market right now. While some might look at it as another “zombie series,” the comic is so much more than that. Instead, it’s more along the line of X-Files crossed with a small town police procedural series. Revival #9 out this week continues the excellent series which you should have been reading since the beginning.

  • Revival #9 – see above
  • Mara #4 – What does being a super hero have in common with being a sports star? Check out this commentary on celebrity, commercialism and sports/entertainment.
  • Daredevil #25 – Mark Waid continues to write one of the best super hero comics on the market.
  • Five Ghosts: Haunting of Fabian Gray #2 – The hot new Image series has an adventurer who can tap into the abilities of five ghosts. The first issue had me intrigued.
  • Superior Spider-Man #8 – Dan Slott has made me interested in Spider-Man, nuff said!
  • Miniature Jesus #1 – Devil on one shoulder – angel on the other. One tells you to do bad things, the other . . .  well, you get the idea. Bad news for a recovering alcoholic if the “good” one is MIA. Between a liquor-gulping demon and a mummified cat hell-bent on mucking up his fragile stability with esoteric trappings of Egyptian Gods, it’s all about to make our hero’s day hit the proverbial fan. <- Um, yeah!
  • Conan the Barbarian #15 – Brian Wood is one of the best writers out there and his Conan is just amazing.
  • Idolized #5 – A super hero comic that’s so good, I’d think it was from one of the “big two.” Do yourself a favor and check out this series you’re missing!
  • The Black Beetle #3 No Way Out – I’m a huge fan of pulp and noir and this series has nailed it so far.
  • Adventure Time #15 – A great comic for all ages captures the craziness of the television show.

Review – Sex #1, Lost Vegas #1 and Mara #3

Sex #1

Sex_1Simon Cooke has retired from his own “alternative lifestyle” and returned to the city he’d previously sworn to protect. Now he’s just another average citizen — or is he?

Going into reading Sex #1, I knew it was about a former hero returning home after something happened. And most of that was pretty opaque in the first issue. To say, the first issue is a slow build is an understatement. You get some hints as to Cooke’s past life, but for folks who want things laid out, this isn’t it.

But, that slow build is fascinating. Cooke is clearly a character hiding something, and maybe we see that at the end of this first issue. Because without those events, I’m not quite sure why this series is titled what it is.

I think to me, that was the biggest mystery of the comic, more so than why Cooke has given up superheroing. Why is this the title of the book? I’m guessing that’ll be clearer as we get further into the series.

The first issue left me a bit frustrated as I wanted to read more, but that just wasn’t the case. It’s good the comic had me this way, I want to read the second issue, like now. This is one of those series that plays mystery well and could be one of the best adult series of 2013, so far it’s one of the more interesting psychological studies of the super hero.

Lost Vegas #1

lostvegas01_coveraThe Eisner Award-Winning team of Jim McCann and Janet Lee reunite to create a universe filled with intrigue as one gambler-turned-slave has 24 hours to go all in and pull off the greatest heist the universe has seen.

Welcome to Lost Vegas! Aboard this luxurious casino-filled traveling space-station you will find the highest stakes games from every corner of every planet, unheard-of winnings, and the greatest attractions anywhere!

McCann and Lee have released some of my favorite comics and it’s a team that instantly gets to be a part of my buy pile. The series is a futuristic heist movie in a world that feels like it could be out of Fifth Element.

There’s something so interesting and creative about the comic. The story is pretty straight forward, a heist, but the world is so creative, so interesting, I’m sucked into the comic. Lee’s art also is just amazing. She always knocks it out of the park, and this is no exception.

McCann and Lee is a pairing that’s one of the best in the business and you should do yourself a favor and find out out why.

Mara #3

mara03_coverSeeing her friends and supporters abandon her, and instead of trying to suppress her newfound powers, Mara goes public. Openly displaying her rapidly developing abilities, she challenges the bias and discrimination. People start to see her as not a freak, but rather someone who can’t be stopped, and that starts to make a lot of very serious people very concerned.

This is socially-aware superheroics in a world we’ve never seen. Wood in just three issues has made a series that’s a brilliant commentary on modern athletics and corporate sponsorship and challenges the notion of what it means to be a super hero.

The story has been a fascinating read, a contender for best mini-series of 2013. The art by Ming Doyle and Jordie Bellaire is fantastic as well with great minimal use of colors.

This is a series that makes you think, but entertained at the same time, a signature of any series by Wood. In Mara, we have one of the best new female characters in a long time. A mix of strength and vulnerability, she’s a character unique, much like the series she embodies.

One of the most interesting comics on the market, it shows comics can be more than just spandex, even when it’s about a person with super powers.
