Kickstarter Spotlight – The Bargain: A Supernatural Graphic Novel Set In The 1950’s

The latest Kickstarter comic project from Kara Barrett, The Bargain is a supernatural graphic novel set in the 1950’s.

The premonitions don’t lie. Jackson Connolly knows the hellhounds are coming for him.

Twenty years ago Jackson signed his soul away to pay his mother’s gambling debt. Now his bill is coming due on New Year’s Eve.

Peddling potions and mojos as a traveling salesman most of his life, Jackson understands a thing or two about magic. But salvation always eludes him. Louisiana is his last hope.

Jackson’s hunt for a way to break the devil’s pact leads him to a haunted plantation in search of a crazy hoodoo slave ghost and then to the wild streets of 1955 New Orleans. With the assistance of an alluring creole healer named Lissette, can Jackson find a way to save himself before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve?

The Bargain will be a full color graphic novel approximately 65-75 pages. It’s a blend of moody noir, action and adventure. If you are fan of the supernatural you will love this dark tale brimming with ghosts, hellhounds and hoodoo magic. There story also has the potential for future volumes!

I’m a fan of noir comics, and add in a supernatural twist the pitch for the graphic novel appeals to me. But most importantly Kara delivers. She gets the comics out, and out on time, going out of the way to update folks and keep them in a loop. We should be supporting upstanding behavior like that for Kickstarter projects.

Art for the graphic novel is provided by J.C. Grande and J.M. Ringuet. We get some examples of what we can expect on the project page, and I’m impressed and am confident we’ll see a solid finished product. I think if you’re a fan of noir/crime comics or supernatural stories, or the combination (like Fatale), then this project is absolutely one to back.

Best Pledge: $20 or $25 gets you a copy of the book and more, it depends if you want it autographed or not. There’s lower tiers where you can get digital versions, but I’m a print person myself.

IndieGoGo Spotlight – Harpy Horror VS. Robot Thriller – Graphic Novel Showdown!

In a twist to the crowd funding experience Kara Barrett, writer of the indie series The End Is Totally Nigh, has launched a new fundraiser page for her upcoming graphic novel project. Not only is she offering a rewards like printed books and posters, but she is also providing a unique incentive and offering “votes” for each dollar contributed. Barrett is pitching two different concepts for her 45 page graphic novel and is allowing the public to decide which concept gets created. The more backers contribute, the more votes they receive. When the online fundraiser is over, the winning concept is the one that will be published.

One story is a sci-fi thriller involving a futuristic world where robots infiltrate every part of life and the other is a modern day horror story about a woman who is unexpectedly turned into a mythological beast. The project page features short previews for each book and a synopsis of each concept. Contributors can sample both and then decide which one they prefer.

Said Barrett:

I knew I wanted to make both of these books, but I could only hope to have the resources to make one of them. I love both stories and I decided that I would let the people contributing to this book decide which one they wanted to read the most. I think no matter which one gets created, the readers will be pleased with the final product.

Contributors can donate as little $5 dollars or as much as $500. The rewards include signed copies of the limited edition first printing of the book, posters, character sketches and cameo illustrations. There are also 3 special reward tiers created for aspiring comic artists, comic enthusiasts/bloggers and resellers. Artists can contribute $50 and have a pinup featured in the book, limited to 15. Comic lovers and bloggers can get signed scripts and an advanced preview of part one of the book along with author interviews. For resellers, there is an option to receive signed books with prints. Perfect for small comic book shops and online retailers.

The fundraiser will last 30 days and all the funds collected will go toward paying for professional artwork, editing and lettering.

You can pledge now.

Crowd-Funded, Indie Comic Series Launches May 5th With Free Download

Coinciding with Free Comic Book Day, The End Is Totally Nigh, a new supernatural indie comic book series by writer Kara Barrett and artist Vinnie Rico, launches. A free digital version of the comic book will be available online for 24 hours to celebrate the series launch and Free Comic Book Day. Just head to their Faceook page and you’ll get a link for the free version.

The comic is mature and centers around a young woman with mysterious powers who must try to stop the impending apocalypse. It’s just one example of the wave of comics being funded by Kickstarter (of which I was one). Barret describes the heroine as a “smart, confident women who have realistic bodies.”

“I wanted to create a series where female characters are defined by their actions, not skin tight clothing and cleavage.” states Barrett. The series features a gutsy female heroine who must battle evil forces.

15 issues are planned for season one of the series.

Kickstarter Spotlight – The End Is Totally Nigh – Issue #1

Kara Barrett is a very enthusiastic comic book creator who has turned to Kickstarter to promote her comic The End is Totally Nigh.  I appreciate an indie artist doing some pounding of the virtual street so I absolutely wanted to spotlight this.  Below you can find out about the project and Kara has promised a guest blog post about her experience with Kickstarter.

The End Is Totally Nigh – Offering Death By Comic Book

How would you like to get killed by a demon in an illustrated cameo of a comic book? Well, that’s one of the reward incentives for the Kickstarter campaign, The End Is Totally Nigh.

Oklahoma comic writer and creator Kara Barrett has launched a Kickstarter campaign for issue #1 of her indie comic series about a supernatural heroine keen on preventing the end of the world.

It’s a girl-meets-apocalypse story filled with demon hordes, quippy banter and more than a few bumpy twists and turns. The End Is Totally Nigh centers around Jane, a girl who has the ability to exorcise demons. But it won’t be long before she discovers that her demon knack is not quite what it seems.

Contributors to the project will receive cool reward incentives based on the amount they pledge. Rewards range from printed copies of the comic book, t-shirts and limited edition artwork to illustrated cameos in the book! The first person to contribute $100 to the project even gets to experience death by comic book, with an illustrated cameo of a poor sap who gets killed by a demon.

The story promises lots of action and some pretty cool artwork by artist Vinnie Rico and cover artist Tim Durning.  To learn more about the project and make your pledge just visit the official Kickstarter page at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kbarrett/the-end-is-totally-nigh-issue-1-0 .
