AWA Studios announces an All-Star Creative Council

AWA Studios has formed a new Creative Council featuring a roster of renowned storytelling innovators. Council members include: Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy-award nominated director, producer and screenwriter Reginald HudlinThe New York Times #1 internationally best-selling author and screenwriter Gregg Hurwitz; acclaimed producer and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridisblockbuster director Joseph Kosinski; popular comedian, writer, actor, podcaster, and producer Al Madrigal; and prolific TV creator and legendary comic writer J. Michael Straczynski

AWA Creative Council

As members of the Creative Council, this super team of visionaries will help shape the overall evolution of AWA’s creator-driven mission and continually redefine the cutting edge of storytelling. The Council’s guidance will benefit AWA’s roster of writers and artists by helping unleash the full potential of their characters and stories, providing a diversity of contemporary storytelling perspectives and putting projects in the best position to be scaled across the entertainment ecosystem.

In just a few short years, AWA has established itself as an industry leader in terms of its relationships with established and emerging creators by providing writers and artists the freedom, incentive structure, and support to pursue their boldest, most original and socially relevant work. AWA’s film & TV studio helps its creators both grow their original ideas from buzzed about graphic literature into multi-faceted entertainment properties that stay true to their vision and retain a significant ownership stake in their creations. This approach has enabled the company to become one of the hottest comic publishers today, quickly surpassing over a million comics sold, while making its properties in demand in Hollywood. AWA Studios has more than 20 film and TV projects in active development, many in partnership with major studios, streamers and networks.

The Creative Council is a highly-differentiating component of the AWA business model. In addition to extensive industry experience and knowledge, several of the council members already have a special connection to AWA. Hudlin, Straczyinski and Hurwitz have been longtime collaborators and friends of AWA Chief Creative Officer, Axel Alonso. At Marvel, Hudlin and Alonso partnered on a new Black Panther comic arc that helped elevate the character into mainstream cultural relevance. Hurwitz is a prominent AWA creator with his original franchise NewThink garnering major attention. In addition to writing new AWA series, Straczynski has been the architect of an all-new, comic-fueled shared universe developed with today’s cultural landscape in mind. As part of The Creative Council, his work will allow interested creators to integrate their character creations into The Resistance Universe.

Kosinski has been at the center of AWA Studios’ first studio project: Chariot, an event feature film, based on the AWA graphic novel by Bryan Edward Hill that Warner Bros. secured after competitive bidding with Kosinski to helm, and 21 Laps producing in partnership with AWA. Kosinski also created the sci-fi action thriller feature film Oblivion, based on his original graphic fiction story. Meanwhile, Madrigal last year partnered with AWA to bring his original Latino superhero creation, Primos, to comic format.

Bryan Edward Hill and Priscilla Petraites’ Chariot Gets a Director in Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski

Chariot #1

Another comic is in the works to come to the big screen as Chariot from Artists, Writers and Artisans (AWA) has found a director in Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski is the director behind the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick. The film will be scripted by Julian Meiojas.

Chariot is by writer Bryan Edward Hill with art by Priscilla Petraites and colors by Marco Lesko. You can read our review of the first issue.

Chariot is a riff on 80s action films that features a state-of-the-art sports car created by the government during the Cold War. After sinking into an ocean, decades later a petty criminal stumbles on the car to find out it’s now controlled by a secret agent’s consciousness.

21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are producing with Kosinski. AWA’s Zach Studin is the exec producer. This is the first project for the recently formed AWA Studios. That’s the film and TV arm of the graphic fiction publisher. This is AWA’s first project but it’s clear the comic publisher has its eye on doing more.

Radical Studios has released the first trailer for Oblivion, the new Tom Cruise science fiction film due out April 2013. The film also has a graphic novel to be released after the movie.

The film, which in addition to Cruise stars Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo, will be released on April 12, 2013 in the US on IMAX and April 19th worldwide.

The film tells the story of a drone repairman stationed on Earth after a devastating war who rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft.

The graphic novel, from the concept by Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski, will be written by Arvid Nelson, with art by Andree Wallen, and will be released in 2014.

Review – Tron: Legacy

Bookmark and Share

Tron LegacyIt’s been months of anticipation leading up to my viewing last night of Tron: Legacy.  I decided to opt for the late showing in 3D fully expecting a pack theater and probably immature and rowdy crowd.  Instead, I had a subdued viewing audience and a theater that was mostly empty.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by numerous folks the movie picks up 20 years after the original cult hit.  It’s updated for a digital age, but at the same time doesn’t quite blow our minds with the possible, instead reveling on how integrated offline and online society has become.  The movie hopes to be philosophical like the Matrix about the mixing of digital and physical but instead is a cheap knock-off of Star Wars.

Jeff Bridges picks up his role of Kevin Flynn and digital alter-ego of Clu using some technology in an attempt to de-age the actor.  At times it works, but even Kosinkski says the scenes with the digitally enhanced Bridges were hit and miss.  Garrett Hedlund plays Bridge’s son Sam who’s be adrift since his father’s disappearance and accidentally winds up in the same digital world.  He’s not bad giving a head strong and at time skeptical performance but nothing blows me away.  Olivia Wilde rounds up the main three characters and she plays a clueless program quite well.  But lets be realistic she could stand on screen and do nothing and I’d be fine with her (so, so sexy).

In the second tier of characters, there’s few and far between but the great Michael Sheen is drastically underused and is given a pithy part instead of being the over the top showman he should have been.

The 3D was understated and really enhanced the film.  Wasn’t it vital, but it added some depth (no I don’t mean it in a pun sort of way).  Scenes were deeper but there wasn’t over the top “objects flying at you moments.”  It’s used well, but not a main draw.

Overall the movie was entertaining.  Not original at all and clearly an attempt to build a franchise for Disney, the movie is worth the $10, but soon after you’ll quickly forget what you watched.
