Mini Reviews: The Ultimates and Jonny Quest

Posted on August 18, 2024 by Logan Dalton

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

The Ultimates #3 (Marvel) – Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, and Federico Blee use the superhero genre and the character of the Hulk to explore the dark history of American nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. They deconstruct the classic “monster island” trope through the character of Tara, who has seen her people devastated by gamma radiation tests presided over by Director Banner. Of course, the American government wouldn’t do these kind of tests on American soil, but on land where they don’t care about the humanity of the inhabitants. I love Camp’s sly characterizations of Iron Lad as naive and of Thor and Sif literally living in a fantasy world as they recklessly beat on gamma-powered animals and humans. Although Frigeri and Blee deliver on the big monster action, Ultimates #3 is more an ode to decolonization and reparation, more Godzilla Minus Zero than Godzilla vs Kong. Overall: 9.0 Verdict: Buy

Jonny Quest #1 (Dynamite) – Joe Casey and Sebastian Piriz balance darkness and nostalgia in their new take on the classic Hanna Barbera cartoon. Jonny Quest #1 isn’t the 60s, but it’s also not Venture Bros. Lorenzo Scaramella’s palette is as bright as ever, but the Quest Family come to terms with their own mortality while investigating their base after a mission. Casey slowly unpacks the new status quo, and Piriz introduces a new, yet familiar face who is drawn in a more photorealistic manner than the classic Doug Wildey designs. At times, Jonny Quest #1 is a fun read (Rocket belts! Cute dogs), but there’s just a hint of sadness because adventure for adventure’s sake really isn’t a thing in the 2020s. Overall: 7.5 Verdict: Read

Jonny Quest’s 60th Anniversary Saga by Joe Casey!

Posted on May 25, 2024 by Graphic Policy Team

Fans are invited to join the adventuring party of Jonny Quest and crew this August alongside fan-favorite writer Joe Casey and brilliant artist Sebastián Piriz. The tale celebrates the six incredible decades of Jonny Quest fandom and follows the issue #0 prelude story with approximately 80,000 copies released for Free Comic Book Day this May.

Climb aboard the Sea Quest and get ready to embark on a journey like no other. Legendary boy explorer Jonny Quest is back in action, and joined by the whole beloved cast originally created for the Hanna-Barbera animation line by comic book legend Doug Wildey.

Jonny’s father, Dr. Benton Quest, is a genius scientist often leading the way. “Race” Bannon is a special agent tasked with protecting Jonny and teaching him a range of skills. Hadji is the orphaned adopted son of Dr. Quest, and Jonny’s brother. Last, but certainly not least, Jonny’s dog Bandit is always along for the ride.

This batch of characters are all back in four color pages, and they’ll be joined by even more unexpected faces as writer Joe Casey hews close to the original spirit of the series, while using a modern storytelling approach in his signature style. This comic series picks up where the original animated series left off in 1964, but fans will be surprised as things quickly take a turn for the uncanny! Now Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products kick off a new era for the franchise!

The title is enhanced by a roster of fully frameable covers by industry luminaries including Chad Hardin, Jae Lee, Tom Raney, Bob Layton, and Richard Pace. More surprises may be around the corner, as Dynamite invites some of the most fun names in comics to tackle this icon.

NYCC 2023: Thundercats ho! Dynamite lands Thundercats, Space Ghost, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest, and more as they team with Warner Bros. Discovery!

Posted on October 12, 2023 by Graphic Policy Team

Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products are partnering to release a range of comic books and graphic novels inspired by some of WBD’s favorite franchises and characters. Projected to start publishing early in 2024 with the first title ThunderCats by Declan Shalvey launching in February. Fans can look forward to a diverse range of stories featuring top tier writers, and gorgeous art! Some of those beloved characters have never had their own comic or graphic novel before.

The initial slate of titles planned to be released across multiple formats include titles that fans of many generations will recognize and be excited to spend time with in comics. Comics fans new and old can get excited for stories featuring ThunderCats, The Flintstones, The Powerpuff Girls, Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, The Wizard of Oz, We Bare Bears, with more to come! The stories will be released in a range of formats and avenues, across the applicable franchises.

First up this February is the almighty ThunderCats! Superstar creators Declan Shalvey, Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry are set to helm and revitalize the franchise for comic books starting this February.

This new series aims to be a refreshing yet timeless take on the classic mythos and characters, pulling from Shalvey’s ability to weave complex narratives alongside the striking visuals from Moss. The initial storyline is currently planned to delve into the earliest days on Third Earth, the world that the ThunderCats are forced to survive on after escaping their original home. With an origin approach in part, the title will explore untold histories and new challenges for Lion-O, Cheetara, and the rest of the group.

Shalvey will dig deeper into the iconic character relationships and push further on the science fiction underpinnings, while Moss is set to portray the wondrous environments of Third Earth and the visually engaging action set pieces. With Lion-O at the center, following his journey toward becoming a worthy leader, the team will work together, combining their diverse talents, attitudes and learning about the magical power of the Eye of Thundera. But will they be able to accomplish these goals and growth, with Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living’s eyes set on them? With the franchise’s trademark blend of action, drama, and touches of science fiction, fans will not want to miss this all-new approach.

Check out the covers by Shalvey and Lucio Parrillo!
