Fire and Ice’s Mysterious Darkwolf Stars in Series by Dan Panosian!

The brutal sword and sorcery mythos of Fire and Ice brings even more exciting comics action this summer with a brand-new series turning the spotlight to the fierce and mysterious Darkwolf, with creators Dan Panosian and Andrey Lunatik at the helm!

Born from the immortal imagination of master fantasy illustrator and painter Frank Frazetta and genius animation innovator Ralph Bakshi, the character of Darkwolf is one of the most memorable and signature parts of their historic team-up for Fire and Ice. The muscled warrior hides his true identity behind an iconic mask. Eventually in the thick of the film’s plot he crosses paths with Larn and Teegra, and fells Nekron by his own hands.

In this new series by Dan “Urban Barbarian” Panosian, readers will get to know — but not too much — the legendary Darkwolf before those events. It all begins when a mother and her twins flee the warlock who sired them. His lackeys are sent out to pursue them, at least until a fabled warrior descends from the mountains to unleash hell upon them. But saving them is only the beginning.

Panosian is joined by artist Andrey Lunatik, making his mainstream debut here. He brings his energetic ink-slinging style that perfectly matches the pulse-pounding adventures and combat of Darkwolf.

The legend of Darkwolf begins here. It’s violent, mythic, and unrelenting. This is a fierce, visceral rebirth of a true barbarian force of nature. Readers will not want to miss this exhilarating epic!

With a lineage including Frazetta and Bakshi, every Fire and Ice comic has a tall task to live up to with not only the interior art but also covers. Darkwolf is displayed in all his ferocious glory by Panosian himself, as well as Stjepan Šejić, Joe Jusko, Stuart Sayger, and Cary Nord. Both Jusko and Nord are legends within barbarian comics, and are complemented with more perfect fits for the genre.

Savage Sword of Conan #1 revives the classic newsprint series

The Savage Sword of Conan #1

Titan Comics has revived the black and white newsprint Savage Sword of Conan, and this first issue is well worth your $6.99.

Beginning with an introduction by Roy Thomas about the history of the title (and teasing his involvement in future titles), Savage Sword kicks off for good with the epic “Conan and the Dragon Horde” by John Arcudi and Max von Fafner. This story is filled with classic Conan themes like greed, lust, and fear of the unknown as Conan’s mercenary gig turns into a hellish nightmare. Von Fafner brings the blood, gore, and big animals using cutting diagonal panels for the more powerful fight scenes. The story has kind of a road trip format taking us to exotic and dangerous places in the Hyborian Age, and there’s some romance too with Conan having searing chemistry with siege weapons engineer Ineah.

This dragon/dinosaur slaying yarn is followed by a prose flash fiction story from Jim Zub that is heavy on adjectives, but redeems itself through visceral action sequences and pointed commentary about religious fanaticism through Conan’s conflict with the Stygians.

As well as Conan, Savage Sword features the first part of a Solomon Kane serial from Patrick Zircher and a companion essay from Jeffrey Shanks that sets up this lesser known character’s role in pop culture. The Conan story is definitely more engaging, and the Solomon Kane serial leads off with a lot of info dumping about Welsh folklore and mythology before turning into a monster story. I definitely enjoy Zircher’s black and white work here than his work for Marvel and DC especially his use of shadow when the mysterious Gawr takes a family’s livestock.

All in all, Savage Sword of Conan #1 is a worthy return of this title and a showcase of gorgeous sword and sorcery visuals paired with insightful arcs for Conan and Solomon Kane.
