Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Cobra Commander #2

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Animal Pound #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was an interesting update to Orwell’s classic and we’re intrigued where this goes and how it might differ.

Blasfamous #1 (DSTLRY) – We’re intrigued to see what this new horror comedy from Mirka Andolfo and DSTLRY is like.

Blitmap #3 (Titan Comics) – We’re here for the unique covers but the story concept and the fact anyone can riff on it is something to watch.

Cemetery Kids Don’t Die #1 (Oni Press) – A kid’s consciousness is locked in a horror game and his friends attempt to rescue them.

Cobra Commander #2 (Skybound) – The first issue was an amazing mix of old and new building off of the mythoes that came before in new ways. Add in the connection to the Transformers world and this is a series that has deserved buzz.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #304 (Skybound) – Great action and solid art. It’s G.I. Joe dialed up to 11.

Invasive #3 (Oni Press) – Super creepy body horror that’ll make your skin crawl.

Not Sew Wicked Stepmom Vol. 3 (Yen Press) – A great new spin on the classic Snow White.

The Six Fingers #1 (Image Comics) – The companion series to The Red Hand that we all loved. This one focuses on the killer?

Taking Care of God (Yen Press) – Days after reading this manga, we’re still contemplating its deeper meaning.

Ultimate Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was the shot in the arm the new Ultimate Universe needed and cemented this series as one to watch.

Invasive #2 ups the unease with solid horror

Invasive #2

Dr. Carrie Reynolds and detective Vic Hudgens cut closer to the heart of the mystery behind the “murder surgeons” and the gruesome surgical attacks plaguing their city. While meeting the newest victim, they come face to face with the deranged society of killers stalking their trail . . . and learn just how far Carrie will go to the find the people who hurt her daughter. Invasive #2 keeps up the unease as the duo attempt to find out who’s behind the destruction.

Written by Cullen Bunn, Invasive #2 does a solid job of keeping things focused on the detective aspect of the story. At its heart, the series is two people trying to get to the heart of a mystery. But, the series just happens to deal with unnecessary surgery, creating visuals that create unease. The second issue is no exception to that delivering shocks in the story and with the imagery.

The comic is solid as the duo follow clues and get closer to those behind the horror. But, we learn more about the two as well, a lot more, and some of it is rather surprising. It shows how for they’re willing to go to find the truth. The story creates an unease in numerous ways and the title implies not just the surgery the people within are having but how far our two “heroes” are willing to go to solve the crime.

Much of the unease is helped by the art from Jesús Hervás. Dan Jackson provides color and lettering by Taylor Esposito and all together the comic borders on the edge of having to look away. The visuals are uncomfortable. For someone like me who has trouble with these sorts of visuals, it’s not the easiest of reads but the visuals impressively balance that line that might take it over the top and distracting.

Invasive #2 is another solid issue that continues the shocks in numerous ways. It’s a solid horror comic that continues to show why Bunn is so well regarded in the genre.

In Shops: Dec 6, 2023
SRP: $4.99

Beyond excess, beyond ethics, beyond science . . . Enter a terrifying new experiment in pain from Eisner Award nominee Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Basilisk) and acclaimed illustrator Jes s Hervás (The Empty Man)! Dr. Carrie Reynolds was a veteran trauma surgeon with a godlike mastery of muscle and bone. But outside the operating room, her rigidly ordered life spiraled into chaos when her daughter, Heather-a recovering plastic surgery addict-suddenly disappeared, only to mysteriously reemerge in a catatonic state, her vocal cords removed . . . the latest in a series of victims scarred by a battery of brazenly cruel medical procedures that have baffled police and left an alarming number of once-ordinary citizens maimed, mutilated, or dead on arrival. Deep beneath the streets of Carrie’s city, a new kind of underground hospital has just opened its doors . . . and, once inside, there are no rules, no oaths, and no taboos too deep to not to be broken. Together, a new class of surgeon has sworn to pierce the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy one incision at a time. The scalpel is their tool. The alleys are their operating theater. Murder is their medicine. And only Carrie can stop what they’re planning next . . .

Homicide: The Graphic Novel Part Two

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #1 (DC Comics) – Batman and Santa teaming up. Nuff said.

Bloodrik #1 (Image Comics) – The art for this one caught our eye in what seems like a fantasy series taken to 11.

Faceless and the Family #2 (Oni Press) – The art of this series is amazing and that reason alone demands you get it!

Homicide: The Graphic Novel Vol. 2 (First Second) – The first volume of the adaptation of the book was amazing and we expect no less from the second. Crime buffs, this is a must.

Invasive #1 (Oni Press) – Cullen Bunn and Jesus Hervas team for what ounds like a disturbing new horror series about medicine and surgery. We’re already having nightmares about this.

Petrol Head #2 (Image Comics) – Cool world and design had us hooked after the debut. Now we’re hoping the series continues with the cool. Petrol Head and Lupa gun it for the SmogZone border with half the O-Zone’s security drones and robo cops on their trail.

Sentry #1 (Marvel) – With the character rumored to be making his Marvel debut, this new series feels a bit “Return of Superman” but it’ll clearly set up whatever is coming down to road for the MCU.

Thunderbolts #1 (Marvel) – Bucky Barnes leading a team to take on Marvel’s heavy hitters? Yes please!

Transformers #3 (Skybound) – The series has been solid so far with this new take on the classic property. It’s familiar but does things slightly different than the Gen-1 we remember.

NIGHT PEOPLE

Written by BARRY GIFFORD & CHRIS CONDON
Art by BRIAN LEVEL, ALEXANDRE TEFENKGI, ARTYOM TOPILIN & MORE
Covers by BRIAN LEVEL, JOËLLE JONES, J.H. WILLIAMS III & MORE

From the mind of literary icon Barry Gifford—internationally renowned creator of Wild at Heart and cowriter of David Lynch’s neo-noir masterpiece Lost Highway—Night People is a pulsating roadmap of the American subconscious, where neon-lit Southern nights give way to lipstick, sweat, and blood, and the odd, the innocent, and the evil are all fellow travelers down an interstate of dark, elusive dreams.

Adapted from Gifford’s acclaimed novel by breakout writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, The Enfield Gang Massacre) and a rotating cast of stunning artistic talents—including Brian Level (Poison Ivy), Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and more—follow an uneasy cast of wanted men, cartel-killers, and lost souls through four interlocking tales as they travel a path of intoxication, lust, and spontaneous violence from New Orleans to Egypt City, Florida, and back again.

In our first tale of desperation, fanaticism, and murder: Two ex-convicts—a pair of inseparable lovers named Big Betty Stalcup and Miss Cutie Early—are out on parole using their newfound freedom to purify the world of men’s evil influence . . . and leaving a trail of mutilated bodies in their wake. As the psychotic dimensions of their star-crossed romance—and the twisting paths that first led them to their fateful meeting at the Fort Sumatra Detention Center for Wayward Women—come into full view, their experiment in righteousness culminates in the kidnapping of Rollo Lamar, a kindly attorney whom Betty and Cutie abduct just to see if they can reeducate at least one man on the planet before the demise of civilization.
