History of the Marvel Universe #1 is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Marvel Universe. Not quite a comic, the first issue is much more like classic guidebooks and character encyclopedias than anything else.
Written by Mark Waid, History of the Marvel Universe #1 is the recounting of the timeline of the Marvel Universe from the formation of it to the late 1800s.
Beginning with the end of the universe, it’s last two survivors discuss what was. We’re taken back to the Big Bang and from there the history of what we know as the Marvel Universe. A lot of ground is covered delivering a timeline of key characters and events explaining everything quickly enough for fans to connect the dots. It’s not heavy enough you’ll be satisfied and maybe driven online to learn more. Waid packs in a ton though. The comic flows nicely and presented in an easy to understand fashion.
Javier Rodríguez on art is tasked with packing all of that in. Álvaro López helps on ink and the result works really well. Again, there’s a lot here so the panel layouts and how it’s handled is impressive. There’s a mix of layouts to handle the needs of history resulting in a visually interesting read. Joe Caramagna‘s lettering is key too as the “story” is told through caption blocks instead of speech bubbles. That also sees a lot packed in on each panel but it never feels cluttered.
The comic is a must for Marvel fans. It feels like a throwback to the guides of the past and takes us through a pretty definitive take on the history of the Marvel Universe. Whether this will become the “bible” is unknown but as a fan, it feels like one I can subscribe to.
