Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2

MMPowerRangers_002_A_MainBOOM! Studio’s is back at it again with issue #2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and boy is it MORPHIN TIME! I was very happy with issue #1 that when the opportunity came across the opportunity to review issue #2 I jumped on it. Last issue we got wind that there may be rift between Tommy and the rest of the Rangers, they are concerned that Tommy may be still working for Rita as they can’t explain why his Dragonzord destroyed some building and a bridge. Meanwhile, Tommy was having issues mentally because he keeps hearing Rita in his head telling him things that is making him act funny and he is trying to control it. Bulk and Skull are at their antics with a YouTube channel and the issue ended with Scorpina visiting Tommy in his bedroom to confront him.

Issue #2 starts off with Billy and Trini looking at wires and control panels trying to figure out why the Dragonzord (which is still underwater by the way) destroyed the Bridge and some buildings if Tommy was not at fault. Billy is feeling frustrated as he feels that he is not a good Ranger as he’s not as advanced a fighter as Jason or Billy, Trini tries to comfort his fears by telling him that you don’t have to be an excellent fighter to be a Ranger, which seems to help.

Meanwhile, Tommy is still in his bedroom being confronted by Scorpina, who is trying to get him to turn over the coin because it does not belong to him, it belongs to her “Queen”, Scorpina also threatens to make his mom convince him to turn over the coin, Tommy takes offense and teleports himself and Scorpina to the middle of the woods to keep his family safe. Scorpina attacks him and Tommy morphs into the Green ranger and starts fighting with her 1 on 1, he is struggling and Scorpina summons the putties to come in and help her fight him.

Meanwhile, Kimberly goes to see Jason teach kids martial arts and Jason has a real knack for teaching martial arts, Kimberly needed to get out of the house as things in her personal life are messed up and she has Tommy on her mind, she feels that he doesn’t care much for her, which even if he was where would she have the time between school and gymnastics (and you know….being a Power Ranger). Jason’s Sense comes up to him and asks him about Tommy and where he grew up, he is very interested in the style the Tommy fights with and would like Tommy and Jason teach the class a little bit about it. Jason said he’s think about it, but by the sound of it he is not thrilled with the idea. As Jason and Kimberly are wrapping up at the Dojo they are alerted that Tommy is in trouble

Tommy is still struggling by himself fighting Scorpina and the putties, but what he doesn’t know is that he may be hurting himself and his powers, but the power coin is still the ultimate prize for Scorpina and Rita Repulsa and Rita is very excited with how well Scorpina is doing with Tommy as she watched through her crystal ball, as Scorpina is near grabbing the coin the Jason, Kimberly and Zach shows up to help free Tommy and fight away the putty and Scorpina. Jason, Zach and Kimberly are talking to Tommy and asking him questions and he is getting defensive and bothered by their questioning of him. A little while later back at the Ranger command center and the rangers are gathered there talking with Zordon and Alpha 5 and they are trying to figure out why Rita would attack Tommy especially in his own house, also Trini and Billy are discussing their findings with all of them. Tommy is still getting defensive and irritated by everything and the all of a sudden……….well hey I am not going to spoil it for you, you’re just going to have to purchase the comic book and find out yourself!!

This was a really great issue and I enjoyed it a lot, the plot is so well written and very detailed. You never feel lost or confused and I think that is a huge testament to how well Kyle Higgins (Captain America Theater of War: Prisoners of Duty, Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #3) Kyle has written for not only BOOM! Studio’s, but IDW, DC and Marvel comics, this guy is no rookie and I am looking forward to rest of the series.

The Artwork again was phenomenal is the book, all the characters are drawn nicely, artist Hendry Prasetya (Green Lantern, Power Girl, Star Trek: The New Adventures) does a great job with the details of the Dragonzord in the beginning. Scorpina can be a challenge to draw because her amour is very intricate as well as Rita’s and he does just a wonderful job overall. The colors really did not pop this issue, but I think it was supposed to be a dark issue as it mostly takes place at night, plus it is an issue where there is a lot of battle and drama, but colorist Matt Herms did a good job in setting the tone.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are just an iconic brand that unless you have been living under a rock or just born people are familiar with and you have to stay true to what the show was all about and the both Kyle and Hendry have done a nice job with keeping it real with the original show, but making the characters a bit more modern. I have really enjoyed the series so far even though we are only on issue number two. I would highly recommend you all go out and purchase yourself a copy today!

BOOM! Studios Launches Power Rangers Publishing Program with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0

If you were a kid in the early ’90s, chances are Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series had a significant impact on your childhood. The iconic superhero franchise is a multi-generational, globally recognized pop-culture phenomenon and has seen continued success for more than 22 years. This coming January, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is partnering with Saban Brands to bring the fun and adventure of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team to modern day with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0, written by Kyle Higgins and illustrated by Hendry Prasetya.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which first premiered in 1993, is a live-action children’s television series about a group of ordinary teenagers who “morph” into superheroes to save the world from evil. Each Ranger is identifiable by their individual Ranger colors: Jason the Red Ranger, Zack the Black Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger and Kimberly the Pink Ranger. A sixth member, Tommy the Green Ranger, joins later in the series. Since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted, Saban’s Power Rangers series has continuously aired on television, with the upcoming 23rd season, Power Rangers Dino Super Charge, premiering in early 2016. BOOM!’s comic series will focus exclusively on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and appeal especially to super fans who grew up watching the show in the ‘90s.

Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers make their BOOM! Studios comic debut in this kick-off #0 issue, which sets the stage for the rest of the series. After escaping Rita Repulsa’s mind control, Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, joins the rest of the Power Rangers to combat her never-ending evil plans. Any semblance of a normal life is now gone for Tommy, but with his newfound family there lies hope for a brighter path. This issue also includes the short story from the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics by Mairghread Scott and Daniel Bayliss, and the first installment of a Bulk and Skull-centric adventure by Steve Orlando and Corin Howell.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 arrives in comic shops on January 13th for $3.99 under Diamond Order code NOV151136. There will be a collection of seven intermixed Ranger covers by Spectrum Award-Nominated artist Goñi Montes, including the 1-in-50 Green Ranger cover and the ultra rare 1-in-100 White Ranger cover.

Review – Fall Out Toy Works, Vol. 1: Tiffany Blues TP

Fall Out Toy WorksThere’s so much I loved about this trade paperback.  Fall Out Toy Works does so much that’s come before, like Pinocchio, but modernizes it and gives enough of a twist to make it stand out.  We have the puppet that wants to be human, the maker who has a rather odd relationship with his creation and a lot of adventure and action.

A brilliant young toy maker risks his entire company for his factory’s newly produced android named Tiffany, but when he falls in love with his own creation and she has already been sold to the most powerful man on Earth, getting her back becomes his greatest passion and threatens to lead to his own destruction. Inspired by the ideas and lyrics of Fall Out Boy, Fall Out Toy Works brings the magic of innocence to life as both a toy maker and his invention set about learning the true secrets of life.

Created by Fall Out Boy, Darren Romanelli (Dr Romanelli DRx) and Nathan Cabrera, this collection also includes interviews with Pete Wentz and Darren Romanelli, plus a sketchbook section revealing the origins of the designs for the project.

The story by Brett Lewis just has so much I liked about it.  The story is familiar but the world and some of the ideas are so original and the ending is just heartbreaking (actually there’s a few spots that are).  The tension and fight for love is just a story I’m a sucker for, and this one delivers.

The art is fantastic.  The layouts and line art are by Sami Basri and Hendry Prasetyo and it’s beautiful.  A shout out has to be given to the colorists too.  Sunny Gho and Jessica Kholinne do a fantastic job.

I don’t even know how much I can praise the book.  It’s just a fantastic read and a story that tugged at my heart at times (I may hide it, but really I’m a big sap).  The ending is fantastic and story just solid as solid can be.  Overall, it’s message and look as to what makes some human is fantastic and an interesting debate.

This is an absolute buy and I hope someone’s smart enough to snatch it up and give it the anime spin it deserves.
