Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2
BOOM! Studio’s is back at it again with issue #2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and boy is it MORPHIN TIME! I was very happy with issue #1 that when the opportunity came across the opportunity to review issue #2 I jumped on it. Last issue we got wind that there may be rift between Tommy and the rest of the Rangers, they are concerned that Tommy may be still working for Rita as they can’t explain why his Dragonzord destroyed some building and a bridge. Meanwhile, Tommy was having issues mentally because he keeps hearing Rita in his head telling him things that is making him act funny and he is trying to control it. Bulk and Skull are at their antics with a YouTube channel and the issue ended with Scorpina visiting Tommy in his bedroom to confront him.
Issue #2 starts off with Billy and Trini looking at wires and control panels trying to figure out why the Dragonzord (which is still underwater by the way) destroyed the Bridge and some buildings if Tommy was not at fault. Billy is feeling frustrated as he feels that he is not a good Ranger as he’s not as advanced a fighter as Jason or Billy, Trini tries to comfort his fears by telling him that you don’t have to be an excellent fighter to be a Ranger, which seems to help.
Meanwhile, Tommy is still in his bedroom being confronted by Scorpina, who is trying to get him to turn over the coin because it does not belong to him, it belongs to her “Queen”, Scorpina also threatens to make his mom convince him to turn over the coin, Tommy takes offense and teleports himself and Scorpina to the middle of the woods to keep his family safe. Scorpina attacks him and Tommy morphs into the Green ranger and starts fighting with her 1 on 1, he is struggling and Scorpina summons the putties to come in and help her fight him.
Meanwhile, Kimberly goes to see Jason teach kids martial arts and Jason has a real knack for teaching martial arts, Kimberly needed to get out of the house as things in her personal life are messed up and she has Tommy on her mind, she feels that he doesn’t care much for her, which even if he was where would she have the time between school and gymnastics (and you know….being a Power Ranger). Jason’s Sense comes up to him and asks him about Tommy and where he grew up, he is very interested in the style the Tommy fights with and would like Tommy and Jason teach the class a little bit about it. Jason said he’s think about it, but by the sound of it he is not thrilled with the idea. As Jason and Kimberly are wrapping up at the Dojo they are alerted that Tommy is in trouble
Tommy is still struggling by himself fighting Scorpina and the putties, but what he doesn’t know is that he may be hurting himself and his powers, but the power coin is still the ultimate prize for Scorpina and Rita Repulsa and Rita is very excited with how well Scorpina is doing with Tommy as she watched through her crystal ball, as Scorpina is near grabbing the coin the Jason, Kimberly and Zach shows up to help free Tommy and fight away the putty and Scorpina. Jason, Zach and Kimberly are talking to Tommy and asking him questions and he is getting defensive and bothered by their questioning of him. A little while later back at the Ranger command center and the rangers are gathered there talking with Zordon and Alpha 5 and they are trying to figure out why Rita would attack Tommy especially in his own house, also Trini and Billy are discussing their findings with all of them. Tommy is still getting defensive and irritated by everything and the all of a sudden……….well hey I am not going to spoil it for you, you’re just going to have to purchase the comic book and find out yourself!!
This was a really great issue and I enjoyed it a lot, the plot is so well written and very detailed. You never feel lost or confused and I think that is a huge testament to how well Kyle Higgins (Captain America Theater of War: Prisoners of Duty, Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #3) Kyle has written for not only BOOM! Studio’s, but IDW, DC and Marvel comics, this guy is no rookie and I am looking forward to rest of the series.
The Artwork again was phenomenal is the book, all the characters are drawn nicely, artist Hendry Prasetya (Green Lantern, Power Girl, Star Trek: The New Adventures) does a great job with the details of the Dragonzord in the beginning. Scorpina can be a challenge to draw because her amour is very intricate as well as Rita’s and he does just a wonderful job overall. The colors really did not pop this issue, but I think it was supposed to be a dark issue as it mostly takes place at night, plus it is an issue where there is a lot of battle and drama, but colorist Matt Herms did a good job in setting the tone.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are just an iconic brand that unless you have been living under a rock or just born people are familiar with and you have to stay true to what the show was all about and the both Kyle and Hendry have done a nice job with keeping it real with the original show, but making the characters a bit more modern. I have really enjoyed the series so far even though we are only on issue number two. I would highly recommend you all go out and purchase yourself a copy today!
