Available in March 2024.

Fleeing her bloody past as the masked cybernetic government enforcer known as Cyn, Meris is discovered unconscious by a former medic and his two adopted daughters.

As they nurse her back to health and she struggles to adapt to a world far from the brutal life she was forced to lead as Cyn, two things become clear: her past isn’t ready to let her go, and she isn’t the only one whose dark, secret history is threatening to destroy their present.

Celebrate some holiday horror with James Tynion IV and Joshua Hixon’s The Deviant

Writer James Tynion IV and acclaimed artist Joshua Hixson, and award-winning letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou unite for a pitch-black holiday horror story in The Deviant. This chilling, nine-issue miniseries is set to launch in November from Image Comics.

As snow falls over Milwaukee in 1972, a blood-stained Santa Claus commits unimaginable atrocities against young men. Fifty years later, a troubled young writer interviews this so-called “Deviant Killer,” who still maintains his innocence from behind bars. And as Christmas approaches once again, the past returns, wielding a sharpened ax.

The Cull #1 channels The Goonies for adventure

The Cull #1

Five friends set off to shoot a short film on a forbidden rock near their home the summer before they all go their separate ways. But that’s not really why they’re there. One of them has lied. And that lie will change their lives forever. The Cull #1 kicks off a story whose roots feel very much planted in classics such as The Goonies.

Written by Kelly Thompson, The Cull #1 is an interesting start full of mystery but more importantly, characters we can relate to. Focused on a group of kids, each is struggling in their own way delivering characters who feel grounded and ones we might know growing up. With homelives that each deliver their own challenges, we’re led to believe their journey involves shooting a film but by the end, the dots are connected and it’s one that’s so much more. It’s a debut that delivers wonder, dread, and a lot of feels too.

Thompsons does an excellent job in the setup. We get a very good sense of each character and their struggles. We get a good sense of their homelife. We also get some teases as to the group interaction and the conflicts that might arise due to that. All of it feels like an adventure a certain group did to get treasure but in this case, the treasure is far more important than some rubies.

Mattia De Iulis handles the art with color by Iulis and lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. The art is solid with such personality for everyone. Each character looks very unique and their own personality. The various settings we’re taken to all tell a story. And Iulis does an excellent job of framing the panels with interesting focuses and angles for the imagery. This is a great example of the art providing a lot of information and helping to tell the story about the world we’re being introduced to.

The Cull #1 is a really solid start. There’s the quibble that there wasn’t much more pushback about what the individuals do at the end, but where’s the fun in that? It’s a debut that gives us some adventure but also emotional heart as well.

SDCC 2023: Vault announces Beyond Real featuring an all-star lineup

Vault Comics showed up at Comic Con International with their biggest slate of programming to date and an exclusive pre-release of one of the year’s most anticipated series. The company has announced Beyond Real, an ambitious and psychedelic series from Zack Kaplan and a lineup of seven spectacular artists whose works will weave together through each issue. 

Beyond Real sees Zack Kaplan return to Vault after his recent celebrated series Mindset, joined by a slate of phenomenal artists including Fabiana Mascolo, Toni Fejzula, Vincenzo Riccardi, Dennis Menheere, Jorge Corona, and Liana Kangas. Each issue of this cerebral and ambitious series will see these artists working in tandem, handing off scenes back and forth to each other as part of the narrative structure of this mind-bending story about simulation theory, the creative spirit, and the struggle for self-determination.

Much of Beyond Real will be colored by the legendary Eisner-winning artist Jordie Bellaire alongside the series artists who will color their own work. The series’ lettering will be crafted by Eisner-winner Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and every issue will be designed by the inimitable Tim Daniel. Each issue will have a main cover painted by Mindset co-creator and Eisner-winning artist John J. Pearson.      

The series follows the struggling artist June following a severe accident which leaves her boyfriend in a coma and causes her to experience bizarre visual phenomena. When she discovers that the world she considers “reality” may in fact be a computer simulation, she must set out on a perilous journey through metaphysical layers of the simulation to reach the true creator and save her love from death.
