Wyatt, a professional thief living off the grid, is recruited by his brother for one last job. Their target: an armored car traveling down a desolate stretch of California highway. But when it turns out that their target is carrying not gold bars but human cargo, Wyatt is plunged into a conflict between warring factions of a doomsday cult. The cult claims that it is their solemn duty to save the world by means of human sacrifice. Will Wyatt protect the boy who has come into his charge? Or will he be swayed by the cult’s increasingly convincing claims that the end of the world is fast approaching?

Cat Fight #1 is a fun and intriguing start

Cat Fight #1

Felix lives a life of high fashion and indulgence. Sure, he steals to get it, but he gets it on his own, nonetheless. When a mysterious character by the name of Schrodinger threatens Felix’s only surviving family member in an attempt to recruit him into a crime syndicate, Felix is sent on a globetrotting game of cat and mouse in a heightened world of colorful criminal masterminds. Cat Fight #1 kicks off a cool crime story that is already full of action.

Written by Andrew Wheeler, Cat Fight #1 packs a lot into the first issue. There’s action. There’s reveals. And it really gets the ball rolling. It feels a bit like Kill Bill with a Bond coolness about it.

Right away Wheeler sucks readers in with Felix and a heist that goes somewhat right but more importantly gets us to know Felix. We get a sense of how he sees the world, items to steal, and a slyness about him that where he’d shake your hand and remove your watch and rings while doing so. The comic feels a bit like the opening of a Bond film, big action sequence just before the credits roll, in this case that’d be at the end of the issue where we’d also get a cool theme song. Overall, it’s just fun.

Where I think the comic is a little short is the art. Illias Kyriazis delivers the cool along with ink by Auguste, color by Dennis Yatras, and lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. But, the style of the characters isn’t quite for me. There’s fantastic page layouts at times but overall, it’s a style that’s not my favorite. It’s all personal preference with this. There’s a lot I like but just some visuals that aren’t for me. It’s not a knock, just what I like for art. But, I do think the comic’s look works well for the story and the layout and flow of pages is excellent, all enhancing Wheeler’s style for this.

Cat Fight #1 is a nice start to the series. Folks who enjoy a good heist/revenge/action story, this is one to check out. It packs a lot into the first issue but does it in a way that keeps the readers engaged and adds to what’s going on. It’s a fun debut that’s well worth checking out.

Indigo Children #1 is an interesting start that shows potential

Indigo Children #1

Indigo Children #1 kicks off an intriguing mystery, Journalist Donovan Price hunts down the extraordinarily gifted Indigo Children after their mysterious disappearance fifteen years prior. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, indigo children is pseudoscientific New Age concept that began in the 1960s and 70s. It posits the idea that some children have supernatural and special traits and abilities, some believing that it’s the next step in human evolution. Yes, it sounds like mutants with concepts ranging from telepathy to greater empathy. There’s no credibility to any of it and criticims points to the concept and term being used in denial of real issues children face such as learning disabilities, mental illness, and other medical issues and a true diagnosis replaced by narcissistic parenting.

With a story by Curt Pires and Rockwell White and a script by Pires, Indigo Children #1 sticks to the concept of a child with extraordinary abilities. At some point in the past, a child shows off extraordinary abilities in Russia. Now, that child, and any evidence of the follow up has disappeared. A journalist is on a mission to uncover the truth which gets wilder as more information is provided.

Indigo Children #1 is an interesting start that teases a lot and leaves things open for interpretation. Could the powers be real but the rest of what’s talked about not? Is it all real? We’ll find out as the series progresses but the comic is presented in a solid way slowly teasing what’s to come. We discover things as the reporter does as well. It’s a mystery more than spandex and powers.

The art by Alex Diotto is solid. With Dee Cunniffe on color and Hassan Otsmaen-Elhaou, the comic overall has a look that feels more noir/detective than superpowers. There’s a gritty and dirty aspect to it all that works so well with the subject matter. There’s moments that feel extraordinary due to how grounded so much of it is while also delivering some brutal aspects to things when needed.

Indigo Children #1 is an intriguing start. It uses a rather controversial term for its title but overall the comic steers clear of the controversy. Instead, it’s a placeholder for mutant or meta that other publishers use. How it all plays out should be rather interesting as the setup is intriguing and the comic itself paces things out nicely.
