Review: Harley Quinn Black + White + Red Chapter Four: “Who Diss?”

Fridays can be looked forward to for more than the weekend, it’s also new chapters of Harley Quinn Black + White + Red. The DC Digital First series has stood out in the program as each chapter so far has stood on its own and none are alike. Each creative team, or single creator, really brings their voice and talent delivering their take on the modern classic character. Harley Quinn Black + White + Red Chapter Four is no exception.

Harley Quinn Black + White + Red Chapter Four: “Who Diss?” has Harley entering a rap battle to get “the Joker Tape,” a mythical cassette featuring the Joker rapping. It’s a completely insane and out there take on the character and story and completely works. The chapter understands these are one and done stories and you can go out and just have fun with it. And the story is a lot of fun.

Writer Tim Seeley shows off his humor, and his rhymes, in a comic that is just too bizarre to describe. It’s a rap battle, that’s it, there’s not much more to it. And with that simple premise, Seeley makes sure to focus on the rhyme and the lyrics delivering some sick verses and beats that cut. It works and works well in that comic you can just read and enjoy. It’s silly fun.

Seeley’s concept works primarily due to Juan Ferrerya‘s art and Steve Wands‘ lettering. The art is delivered in interesting panels and angles as the lyrics are dropped back and forth. It delivers “action” to a concept that doesn’t have a lot of it. But, there’s something to the flow as well. The angle of the panels and stances of the characters help emphasize the rhythmic nature of it all. The lettering does that as well with key words emphasized and an attempt to bring the musical aspect of it all to the page. This is a story that really relies on the art to really deliver “the flow.”

Harley Quinn Black + White + Red Chapter Four is a crazy chapter that just works. It’s a goofy concept that is one you can pick up and just enjoy. There’s a cuteness and humor to it all, especially seeing the embarrassment that Ivy feels being a part of it all. The team really delivers both in the lyrics, and some subtle jokes, as well as art that delivers the “battle” aspect of the rap. Another excellent chapter showing off how much you can do with Harley Quinn and also when you let your creators have fun.

Review: Harley Quinn Black + White + Red #3

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #3 keeps an impressive streak going of a digital series in both its quality and ability to deliver a different experience with each issue. Part of the DC Digital First program of original digital comics, the series is an anthology with each issue seeing a different creative team. That has resulted in three stories all featuring the same character but each different in tone and depiction. It emphasizes the ability of the character to be presented in so many ways and also how much a creator’s vision influences that.

Saladin Ahmed handles the writing duties for Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #3. The story revolves around three goons sent to steal Joker gas from Harley Quinn. Each tells their version of how the caper went, each with wildly different takes but all with similar themes. The chapter feels almost like a meta commentary on the concept of Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red as a whole.

With three stories, we get multiple depictions of Harley in increasingly bizarre takes. Each gets wilder than the last and the art shifts with each as well. In three chapters of the digital series, we have far more than three takes on the character.

That different take is helped by Javier Rodriguez who handles pencils, inks, and colors. Clayton Cowles provides the lettering. The depictions of Harley and the theft varies with each telling and by the end, the depictions vary greatly. But, even with the different design there’s a similarity about it all in visuals. It’s really interesting and much like the digital series as a whole, it’s the same but different.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #3 has a Batman: The Animated Series vibe about it all and the much-beloved “Almost Got ‘Im” episode. That too featured villains telling stories revolving around Batman. In this case, it’s low level thieves doing the same about Harley. The art style too gives it a whiff of the series and episode.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #3 helps cement this as a digital series that’s a must get with each chapter delivering something new in self-contained stories. DC seems to really have nailed down a strategy for the digital releases and Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red is a crown jewel and perfect example of the publisher’s future.

Review: Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #2

Harley Quinn is back in a new adventure in Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #2. This time Mirka Andolfo takes the reigns for writing and art. Andolfo delivers a fun adventure that puts the focus on superhero fashion and social media. Harley Quinn WAS the most stylish villain out there. When Catwoman takes that top spot, Harley wants to show she has the fashion chops.

Andolfo puts together an entertaining second chapter of this DC Digital First series. There’s a lot of subtle jabs at social media, influencers, and the unrealistic outfits female comic characters are force to wear. And the key thing is how subtle it is. Mirka keeps the focus on the fun and humor of it all delivering a chapter that’s full of kinetic energy that feels more akin to an episode focusing on Team Rocket in Pokémon than the previous chapter’s psychological examination.

It’s a cute story overall. Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #2 features a shift in tone that emphasizes how many different ways you can interpret and portray this character. DC’s decision to go with Andolfo’s chapter after the debut feels deliberate. It’s so far in the other direction in tone and plot that it really is night and day. It also highlights that this is an anthology series that you can pick up and choose which chapter you want based on the creative team. There’s no ongoing thread so far in the series.

Andolfo’s art is fantastic as expected with some stunning couture. There’s a fantastic use of the series’ signature minimalist coloring of black, white, red, with some gray. What really stands out are the page layouts with some impressive and eye-popping panels. The layout of the pages really emphasizes the kinetic and frenetic feel of the story and enhances the flow of the narrative. It’s stunning work.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red #2 is a fun second chapter that’s so removed and different than the debut of this series. It highlights that Harley Quinn’s depictions and stories can be so varied. She’s a character like the best of actors that can do drama and comedy with a flip of the switch. It also shows how much each creator brings to the story and drives how we see the character. Fans of Harley Quinn should be happy with this chapter and it’s also a solid standalone story for those who want to discover more about her.

Review: Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red Chapter One

DC Comics dropped a surprise DC Digital First series with Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red. The anthology series will be told in fourteen chapters from a rotating group of creators, a who’s who of top talent. As a top tier character who has seen numerous different iterations and interpretations, the move is a smart one and the debut chapter is intriguing that it should hook readers new and old to check out further releases from the series.

The first chapter “Harleen: Red” is by writer/artist Stjepan Šejić with lettering by Gabriela Downie. Set in the world of Šejić’s New York Times bestselling graphic novel Harleen, this story hints at a “red” that will have meaning only to Harley Quinn! Thankfully, you don’t need to have read Harleen to appreciate this digital comic, and instead, it can be picked up on its own and enjoyed.

Harley is in Arkham Asylum focused on the color red. The issue has her squaring off with another psychologist who’s attempting to break down Harley to find out what’s on her mind. She’s escaped a few times at this point and Arkham is considered a joke of an institution so there’s a focus to get this right.

The comic itself feels like a one-woman play in many ways. Šejić has Harley go off about the color red and its role throughout her life. What it reminds her of, the good, the bad, the traumatic. You can easily imagine this playing out on a stage with lines delivered to an audience. There’s a romantic wisp of it all. Harley waxes poetically about her time with the Joker and the abusive dance between the two. And there’s the eventual twist that fans of the character will see coming from a mile away. Though predictable, there’s still a romantic aspect to it all. A damsel being rescued from the castle tower in a way.

The art is amazing. The use of so few colors creates a dramatic flair and emphasizes the art in so many ways. The emotions come from Harley’s movements and facial expressions, with a dash of red highlighting a small detail. Downie’s lettering is key as it emphasizes words and phrases creating a more dynamic reading.

There’s a point that the exploration turns into abuse porn in many ways. We relive Harley’s traumatic experiences over and over at the hands of the Joker. It gets tiring and “been there, seen it”. But, this comic delivers an air of romanticism that’s not aimed at the Joker and when you get to latter moments there’s something touching about it all. Harley thinks about the horror but longs for what feels like her true love to save her. As a comic goes,the first chapter of Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red is a fantastic read and as an introduction to this series, it’s a hell of a start.

DC Delivers a Surprise Digital Release of Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red With First Chapter by Stjepan Šejić and Gabriela Downie

DC has announced the launch of its newest Digital First series, Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red! Publishing each Friday and spanning 14 chapters, this digital series is an anthology of standalone stories told in the vein of the classic Batman: Black & White. The first chapter is available for purchase now on participating digital platforms, including readdc.com, Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and more.

Each chapter of Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red will be told in traditional black and white with the color red utilized in unique ways throughout each of the individual stories. The debut chapter of the Digital First series is “Harleen: Red” by writer/artist Stjepan Šejić with lettering by Gabriela Downie. Set in the world of Šejić’s New York Times bestselling graphic novel Harleen, this story hints at a “red” that will have meaning only to Harley Quinn!
