Baltimore Comic Con 2014: The Annual Yearbook Returns in 2014 with Matt Wagner’s Grendel!

2014 grendel yearbook 1The Baltimore Comic-Con’s Yearbook returns in 2014, celebrating the creators appearing at the show taking place Friday, September 5th through Sunday, September 7th, 2014. This book of art features interpretations of characters from Matt Wagner’s Grendel, sometimes in conjunction with their own creations, in a celebration of creator-owned properties. Beautifully designed by returning guest and Love and Capes creator Thom Zahler, the book comes in a standard and, for VIP ticketholders, a limited VIP cover edition.

Once again, the popular scavenger hunt returns in 2014! When you buy the book, you’ll get a list of the 48 Yearbook contributors and their table numbers. If you succeed in your hunt, you can get your choice of bonus prints!

Grendel first appeared as Matt Wagner’s contribution to issue #2 of the 1982 comics anthology Comico Primer. Moving onto a solo black-and-white series with Comico in 1993, the initial run lasted 3 issues before cancellation due to the publisher’s financial problems. Wagner then relaunched the character in back-up stories in his Comico title, Mage, before a new standalone title launched by the same publisher in 1986, which transitioned publishers to Dark Horse Comics in 1990. Grendel as a character has existed in different times as different people — Hunter Rose, Christine Spar, Brian Li Sung, Eppy Thatcher, Orion Assante, and more. The character has gone on to cross over with DC Comics’ Batman and, most recently, with Dynamite Entertainment’s Grendel vs. The Shadow.

The art created for the 2014 Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook celebrating over 30 years of Matt Wagner’s Grendel will be auctioned off at the Baltimore Comic-Con Art Auction on Friday, September 5th at 5pm! A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to Seth Kushner and his fight against leukemia. Seth is a frequent guest of the Baltimore Comic-Con and everyone is looking forward to his return to the show in 2015! To learn more about Seth and to contribute to his cause, please go to http://www.gofundme.com/d8gc2o.

NYCC 2013: Dark Horse and Dynamite Announce Epic Crossover(s), Starting with Grendel/Shadow by Matt Wagner

Days before the doors open on one of the year’s largest events in pop culture, Dark Horse Comics and Dynamite Entertainment announce the first in a series of upcoming crossovers. Matt Wagner will write and draw an all-new Grendel story steeped in the pulp-noir world of The Shadow!

The Shadow is one of the most renowned and enduring pop-culture creations of all time, a multi-media character that established the original archetype of the modern super-hero.  Grendel, Matt Wagner’s epic saga of dark aggression, has been a trailblazing powerhouse of independent comics for over thirty years and, for many fans, the elegant and deadly Hunter Rose is the quintessential version of the character.  Combined, these legendary and iconic characters represent over a century of publishing history!

Best-selling author Hunter Rose is secretly the masked assassin and criminal overlord known only as Grendel. When an arcane artifact comes into his possession, Grendel finds himself thrust into a world for which he seems destined, where style and violence intersect to form a dazzling golden age.  He will soon discover that this New York also has a fearsome protector—a dark and mysterious avenger whose name is spoken in hushed whispers, The Shadow!

This exciting new three issue series will be released in three 48 page prestige format issues in 2014! Look for more details in the months to come.

Announcing Grendel Tales The Grendel Fan Film

Last Day Entertainment and ManOrMonster Studios have announced Grendel Tales, a new fan-made video series based on Matt Wagner‘s Grendel comic books.  Grendel is an underground comic from the 1980’s through Comico and had some mainstream success in the 1990’s with Dark Horse Comics, and Wagner still occasionally publishes the title.

The first short is planned for 5 to 10 minutes and is based on the Grendel: War Child series.  Using “old-school, practical effects,” the video series will look like a TV spot from the late 80’s and early 90’s.  In addition to costumes, full-size and miniature sets, and classic camera effects, this project will also have some stop-motion puppet work for the old-time monster and sci-fi movie fans.

ManOrMonster Studios is artist Brandon Michael Barker, a Producer on the project as well as Costume Designer and Effects Supervisor.  Last Day is Producing, Jeremy Beaver is Directing and Editing and Mike Booth is the Production Manager, whose team includes Chris Toliver, Travis Easter, and T.R. McCully who are constructing camera/lighting rigs, props, and sets.  Maximumedia Design is the media firm of “Grendel Tales“, handling the web design, marketing, as well as custom graphics and sound.  Celebrated horror artist, Chris Kuchta is now involved, as well as Tim Gick (frontman of TV Ghost) will be scoring the short.

Last Day and ManOrMonster launched the website, GrendelTales.com, and their Kickstarter project at C2E2 this year.  Everyone involved is donating time and money to finish this short video, and are asking interested fans to contribute as well.  They are trying to raise an additional $2,500 to finish the set and miniature construction, creature effects, and a few more costumes.

CBLDF Announces Liberty Annual 2011!

Official Press Release

Support CBLDF With The Industry’s Greatest Creators in CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA & New York, NY – 8 August 2011 United We Stand Against Censorship! That’s the message from Image Comics, over two dozen of the industry’s greatest creators, and our friends at DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who have all banded together to deliver the greatest CBLDF benefit comic yet — CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011!

Famed comics editor Bob Schreck, Editor-in-Chief of Legendary Comics, and Assistant Editor Greg Tumbarello view censorship as the ultimate form of bullying and have gathered an all-star team of comics creators to tell powerful stories that take a stand against censorship. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 comprises 48 powerful pages of all new stories and art. The proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the ever-important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Schreck declares, “It’s an honor to be asked to edit LIBERTY ANNUAL! We wanted to show the human side of what it means to be censored, and we’re elated with how many powerful and heartfelt tales were delivered. With an American facing prosecution in Canada for the comics he reads, the work that CBLDF does is more important now than ever, and the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL is essential tool in the fight against censorship.”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 collects incredible contributions, including original stories by superstars J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman), J.H. Williams III (Batwoman), Steve Niles (30 days of Night), Judd Winick (Catwoman), Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder). Look for all-new tales featuring Grendel by Matt Wagner, Cowboy Ninja Viking by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Shaky Kane. Plus: a massive and first-ever full-color story from independent comics master Craig Thompson (Blankets)! Marvel and DC Comics have stepped up to show their support, with all-new pin-ups of Batman by Dustin Nguyen, X-Men by Greg Land, Green Lantern by Ivan Reis, and the Avengers by Greg Horn! It’s all topped off by incredible covers by John Cassaday, Matt Wagner, and two variant covers by Frank Quietly: a full-color, 1 in 25 cover, and a black and white, 1 in 50 cover!

“Bob’s experience as an editor is hard to beat, and we’re proud to have him at the helm,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Bob made a book that has something to say, without being sentimental or preachy. He’s made a comic we can all be proud of, and that will go a long way towards advancing the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson says, “It should go without saying that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great country. Our right to free expression is challenged on a daily basis, though, and sometimes, those challenges occur within the comics world. Without the diligence of organizations like the CBLDF, everyone in the comics community would be much worse off. There are always bullies out there trying to keep people from enjoying the rights we’re all entitled to, but thankfully there are also people willing to stand up for those rights. I’m proud that Image is able to lend a hand.”

Join the fight against censorship by picking up your copy of CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 (AUG110415), a 48-page full color comic book benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, available from Image Comics on October 12, 2011, for $4.99.
