AWA Studios announces an All-Star Creative Council

AWA Studios has formed a new Creative Council featuring a roster of renowned storytelling innovators. Council members include: Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy-award nominated director, producer and screenwriter Reginald HudlinThe New York Times #1 internationally best-selling author and screenwriter Gregg Hurwitz; acclaimed producer and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridisblockbuster director Joseph Kosinski; popular comedian, writer, actor, podcaster, and producer Al Madrigal; and prolific TV creator and legendary comic writer J. Michael Straczynski

AWA Creative Council

As members of the Creative Council, this super team of visionaries will help shape the overall evolution of AWA’s creator-driven mission and continually redefine the cutting edge of storytelling. The Council’s guidance will benefit AWA’s roster of writers and artists by helping unleash the full potential of their characters and stories, providing a diversity of contemporary storytelling perspectives and putting projects in the best position to be scaled across the entertainment ecosystem.

In just a few short years, AWA has established itself as an industry leader in terms of its relationships with established and emerging creators by providing writers and artists the freedom, incentive structure, and support to pursue their boldest, most original and socially relevant work. AWA’s film & TV studio helps its creators both grow their original ideas from buzzed about graphic literature into multi-faceted entertainment properties that stay true to their vision and retain a significant ownership stake in their creations. This approach has enabled the company to become one of the hottest comic publishers today, quickly surpassing over a million comics sold, while making its properties in demand in Hollywood. AWA Studios has more than 20 film and TV projects in active development, many in partnership with major studios, streamers and networks.

The Creative Council is a highly-differentiating component of the AWA business model. In addition to extensive industry experience and knowledge, several of the council members already have a special connection to AWA. Hudlin, Straczyinski and Hurwitz have been longtime collaborators and friends of AWA Chief Creative Officer, Axel Alonso. At Marvel, Hudlin and Alonso partnered on a new Black Panther comic arc that helped elevate the character into mainstream cultural relevance. Hurwitz is a prominent AWA creator with his original franchise NewThink garnering major attention. In addition to writing new AWA series, Straczynski has been the architect of an all-new, comic-fueled shared universe developed with today’s cultural landscape in mind. As part of The Creative Council, his work will allow interested creators to integrate their character creations into The Resistance Universe.

Kosinski has been at the center of AWA Studios’ first studio project: Chariot, an event feature film, based on the AWA graphic novel by Bryan Edward Hill that Warner Bros. secured after competitive bidding with Kosinski to helm, and 21 Laps producing in partnership with AWA. Kosinski also created the sci-fi action thriller feature film Oblivion, based on his original graphic fiction story. Meanwhile, Madrigal last year partnered with AWA to bring his original Latino superhero creation, Primos, to comic format.

The Resistance Universe expands with The Resistance Universe: The Origins

AWA Studios has announced The Resistance Universe: The Origins. The super-sized first collection of stories from the developers’ original shared universe, The Resistance, was created and penned by acclaimed filmmaker and comic book writer J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Eisner Award-winner Mike Deodato, Jr. Additional creators including Gregg Hurwitz, Kaare Andrews, C.P. Smith, Mike Choi, and more followed suit, creating their own series that each tell a different story within the Resistance Universe. The 368-page collected edition will be available on Wednesday, December 7.

In March 2020, amid COVID-19 lockdowns, AWA Studios launched a bold new universe featuring compelling  21st Century themes with J. Michael Straczynski & Mike Deodato Jr.’s The Resistance, in which “Reborns” gain incredible powers in the wake of a global pandemic. This epic debut series planted the flag for a new universe of heroes and villains. After humanity faced “The Great Death” – a pandemic that killed millions of people – survivors with superhuman powers known as the “Reborns” become Earth’s last hope. The concept of this universe stemmed from an intersection of ideas from J. Michael Straczynski, who was fascinated by where the premise for science fiction ends and the superhero universe begins.

Over the last two years, other creators like Gregg Hurwitz, Kaare Andrews, and Michael Moreci have followed with their own series’ within the Resistance Universe. Now, for the first time, AWA is collecting each of the initial chapters in this super-sized collection which includes the following series:

  • THE RESISTANCE VOL. 1 – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski | Artist: Mike Deodato, Jr.

Are they harbingers of more perils to come…or Earth’s last hope?

  • THE RESISTANCE: REBORNS – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski | Artist: C.P. Smith

This special collection explores the origins of five characters in this new universe of heroes and villains including The Mad, the Dangerous, The Hidden, The Lost, and The Transcendent.

  • MOTHS #1 – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski | Artist: Mike Choi

Following heroine Emily Kai who is known as a “Moth,” MOTHS #1 is an intimate look at a very special species within the superhuman race known as The Reborns.

  • E-RATIC: RECHARGED #1 – Writer & Artist: Kaare Andrews

  • THE JONESES #1 – Writer: Michael Moreci | Artist: Alessandro Vitti

This series focuses on a suburban family with a big secret – mother, father, sister and brother were all transformed into something superhuman. While the world embraces fascism born of fear, the Joneses realize they face grave consequences if they are exposed.

Review: NewThink #1

NewThink #1

Anthologies can be a hell of a lot of fun. They provide an opportunity to check out a whole bunch of creators or deliver standalone stories brought together with a theme. NewThink #1 kicks off a new one examining the rapid proliferation of technology, the cultural and political polarization of the country, and the technocrats that have driven us to such extremes of thought that we need to present the present as something…futuristic.

Written by Gregg Hurwitz, NewThink #1 delivers an interesting spin on screen addiction delivering a rather original take on the proliferation of computers in our lives. The story spins out the idea that computers were really an invading force from space, aliens here to subjugate humanity.

From that simple idea, Hurwitz dives into, and digs into, the addiction and the fallout that so many experience today. We’re glued to our screens, allowing them to dictate our lives, interactions, and self worth. It’s all an interesting concept and Hurwitz does what works great for sci-fi, uses it to examine humanity and where we stand as a society.

Mike Deodato Jr. provides the art with Lee Loughridge on color and Andworld Design handling the lettering. The look of the comic is interesting and not an easy task to convey. The art is mainly computers, people staring at screens, and people sitting at desks. Still, the art team delivers a look that fits so well to Hurwitz’s concept. The art creates an ominous tone to it all. Small details like the change in people’s body shape and size add to it all allowing the reader to come to a conclusion and go further with the horror that the narrative states.

Going into NewThink #1, I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know it was an anthology nor that the comic was a one and done read. I came away scratching my head a bit honestly. But, it’s a solid read that works great as part of an anthology. Standing on it’s own, it’s a bit of a tough call. The concept is great but it also didn’t quite stick with me. it felt like a good Twilight Zone episode where you’re happy you spent the time with it but moved on not long after.

Newthink explores the polarization of the country and the technocrats driving us to extremes

AWA Studios has announced the sci-fi anthology series, Newthink. From writer Gregg Hurwitz alongside an all-star team of artists each tackling a different issue, the original comic holds a dark mirror up to the modern world of technology and the culture wars. Featured artists in the 5-issue series include Mike Deodato Jr., Ramon Rosanas, Mike Choi, Keron Grant, and Will Conrad

Newthink is a science fiction comic set in a faraway world…that is actually the reality of living today in America. Much in the way that Star Trek transported 1960’s social upheaval to faraway planets or The Twilight Zone broadcast Cold War anxiety through the lens of monsters and aliens, this Black Mirror-style series continues a long tradition of using science fiction to underscore social commentary. Newthink aims to examine the cultural and political polarization of the country and the technocrats that have driven us to extremes of thought that we need to present the present as something futuristic. Each story in the 5-issue anthology consists of unique characters and independent storylines that highlight these themes.

Newthink #1 will be available Wednesday, June 1st both digitally and in stores wherever comic books are sold.
