Skeletons From My Stack: Lumberjanes Volume 1: Beware the Kitten Holy

Lumberjanes Volume 1

Like most bibliophiles, I keep a stack of books by my bed that I one day plan to read. Unfortunately, between reading review materials, participating in reading challenges, books I’ve had on hold at the library for ages becoming available, and the lure of new books, that stack never seems to get any smaller. So I’ve decided to make an effort to finally tackle some of the books from my bedside “to-be-read” stack. So sit back and enjoy reading my thoughts on some of the skeletons from my book stack.

Lumberjanes is a series that has intrigued me for a long time. Brandy, the lady who owns my local comic book store, loves the Lumberjanes. It’s her favorite series. She’s got a discerning palate when it comes to comics, so a recommendation from her carries a lot of weight. Over a year ago, someone gave me a box of books. In that box was Lumberjanes Volume 1. I donated most of the rest of the books to charity, but I kept the Lumberjanes trade paperback. It has sat waiting on my stack until the day I got around to finally reading it. That day is today!

Five female best friends at a summer camp in the woods. Sounds like the plot of a slasher movie (or a porno). Sorry to disappoint fans of horror films (or porn enthusiasts) but Lumberjanes is a girl-powered fantasy adventure series. Best friends Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are spending the summer at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types. This is no ordinary summer camp. Mysteries lay nearby, waiting to be uncovered and the surrounding woods are full of fantastic and mythical creatures.

From the dialogue to the sight gags, this is a really funny comic book. The girls’ friendship really shines through. Their relationships are very endearing and stand out from the purposely ridiculous nature of the story. Each chapter is preceded by a section out of the Lumberjanes field manual. These excerpts tie into the events of each chapter and provide cute background info to the story. I really liked all the pop culture references contained within the dialogue. I also enjoyed all the references to famous women from history. Admittedly, I had to Google a few to realize who was being referenced, but that isn’t a bad thing. Any comic that inspires people to learn on their own is doing something right.

Artist Brooke Allen’s style reminded me a little of Captain Underpants. Except, she used darker inks and much fuller levels of detail. The colors are so vivid and bright that there were times where I considered wearing sunglasses to read this book. Even the scenes set at nighttime are given a rich vibrancy by Maarta Laiho’s color choices. I really liked how Allen draws faces. They convey emotion while retaining the elasticity and wackiness of a cartoon character.

Lumberjanes Volume 1 was well worth the wait. I’m glad I chose it as the first book to remove from my stack. This comic is geared toward young people, and the story is very silly. So although it’s suitable for all readers, it may not appeal to those used to more mature titles. The first volume contains a joyful adventure story full of heart and humor. I’m not sure if I’ll read any further into the series, but I do regret waiting so long to check it out. Lumberjanes made for a fun afternoon of reading. Now onto the next title in my stack…

Lumberjanes Heads to HBO Max with an Animated Series

Lumberjanes #1

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the Eisner-winning comic book series Lumberjanes is getting an animated series on HBO Max.

Series co-creator Noelle Stevenson will write and executive produce the show. The comic series has been published by BOOM! StudiosBOOM! Box imprint.

While nothing is set in stone, if the project develops then it would start with an animated special that would then lead into a series.

Lumberjanes is about five friends, Apirl, Jo, Mal, Molly, and Ripley, who all come together at the camp Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thilstle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. From there they get into all sorts of adventure.

Lumberjanes launched in 2014 and was created by Stevenson, Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Brooklyn A. Allen. The series has run for over 70 issues and 13 collections and graphic novels selling over 1.5 million copies of its trades. It’s won numerous awards including Eisners and the GLAAD award for outstanding comic. The comic has also lead to prose novels and an encyclopedia exploring the world.

A feature film was in the works at Twentieth Century Fox going back to 2015 but the purchase by Disney upended that project. With it being a hot property a bidding war erupted.

DC Reveals a Look at Lois Lane and the Friendship Challenge

Lois Lane and the Friendship Challenge

Written by Grace Ellis
Illustrated by Brittney L. Williams
Colored by Caitlin Quirk
Lettered by Ariana Maher
On sale 7/21/2020
MSRP: $9.99

From New York Times bestselling author Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and artist Brittney Williams (Goldie Vance) comes a new story about 13-year-old Lois Lane as she navigates the confusing worlds of social media and friendship.

It’s the first day of summer break in the sleepy town of Liberty View, and young Lois Lane bursts onto the scene with what she knows is a sure-to-go-viral video channel. Okay, maybe her platform only receives two views a week (thanks, Mom), and maybe her best friend, Kristen, isn’t quite as enthusiastic about social media, but when Lois sets her mind on something, there’s no turning back.

At the end of the week, the big neighborhood barbecue and bike race will be the perfect backdrop to Lois and Kristen’s #friendshipchallenge video. But when the girls find out the annual fireworks are missing, Lois doubles down on her efforts for fame, testing her friendship in ways she couldn’t imagine.

With Kristen leaving for sleepaway camp after the barbeque and a new girl on the block taking all of Kristen’s attention, will Lois be able to find the missing fireworks, celebrate the summer, and post the best #friendshipchallenge the internet has ever seen? Or will she have to face her challenges IRL?

ALA 2019: DC Reveals a Massive Slate of Graphic Novels Geared Towards Young Adults and Middle Grade Readers Releasing Through 2021

The 2019 convention for the American Library Association (ALA) kicked off with huge news that DC was consolidating its line under three “brands.” That left many to wonder about the future of the DC Zoom and DC Ink graphic novel lines. Launched last year, the new graphic novel imprints were focused on the young adult and middle grade readers and have been hits so far. DC followed up those concerns with an announcement of a slate of graphic novel releases aimed at those young adult and middle grade readers.

These graphic novels continue the focus on stories not part of DC’s ongoing continuity making them accessible to new fans. The releases also focus on the original mandate of YA titles being about “everyday aspirations, struggles, and triumphs,” while the middle grade releases being focused on stories about “friends, family, and growing up.”
