Pick of the Week – DMZ #68

Brian Wood’s amazing look at modern war is winding down, but DMZ hasn’t slowed down in it’s brilliant look at the world. This is an allegory that asks pertinent questions and raises points that should lead to water cooler discussion. It’s easily one of the most important pieces of work in the last decade, one that deserves a bigger spotlight.

DMZ #68 – see above
The Walking Dead #88 – Robert Kirkman has not only been upping the tension, but also the heart strings as the survivors must deal with the ramifications of the latest zombie attack.
Captain America #2 – The first issue was amazing, there’s no reason to think the second won’t be just as entertaining.
Darkwing Duck #15 – A perfect example of a comic book that captures the fun and entertainment of the cartoon series it’s based off of. All ages fun.
Freakshow #3 – A mix of super heroes and horror, this series is well worth checking out, for some great art and a pretty original concept.

Review – Freakshow #2

I loved the first issue of the series, and it was going to be tough for Freakshow #2 to hold up and match that quality. It absolutely does. The second issue of the series picks up where the first ended. The series is a mix of horror and action, with heroes that aren’t what you expected. Written by David Server and Jackson Lanzing with art by Joe Suitor the story is a series you probably aren’t reading, but need to give it a chance.

Ape Entertainment’s long-awaited dark superhero epic launches with a giant-sized debut issue! When five refugee survivors develop monstrous mutations from a devastating chemical explosion that leaves their city in ruins, they band together to seek revenge. But do these terrifying new abilities make them monsters — or heroes?

As I said in my first review, the series has more to share with a super hero comic than horror. Yeah, the “heroes” are disfigured monsters, but they think they’re doing good. It’s a great mix of story and mood. The art is different, there’s just something about the look to it you don’t see often. The line art, coloring, everything just pops to it.

I’m sure you haven’t read the first issue (even though I gave it a 9), but this is a series that deserves your dollar. It’s a definite buy.

Pick of the Week – Echoes #5

The pick of this week is Echoes #5. It’s the final issue of this limited series and if you haven’t been reading this thriller you’ve been missing out. The five issue series is beyond fantastic and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an early contender for limited series of the year and I really hope we see more comic like this.

Echoes #5 – See above.
Osborn #5 – This series is full of just some twisted stuff and great political intrigue. I have no idea how they’ll wrap up the plot points in this issue.
Velocity #4 – It seems like forever since the third issue which ended in a holy shit moment. I have no idea what to expect now.
“X” Books – Age of X is wrapping up and Schism is on the horizon. Now’s the time to start getting back into the “X” line of books.
Freakshow #2 – There’s a good chance you missed the first issue, but it was fantastic. We’ll soon have a review of this second issue which I’m sure is as solid as the first.

Review – Freakshow #1

I had no idea what to expect going into Freakshow #1. I thought it’d be a horror comic, or some comic version of gore porn. How wrong was I. And how solid it was. Written by David Server and Jackson Lanzing with art by Joe Suitor the story is nothing I expected.

Ape Entertainment’s long-awaited dark superhero epic launches with a giant-sized debut issue! When five refugee survivors develop monstrous mutations from a devastating chemical explosion that leaves their city in ruins, they band together to seek revenge. But do these terrifying new abilities make them monsters — or heroes?

The comic shares more with super hero comics than horror. It’s main characters might be freaks, but the writing makes you sympathetic towards them. The background as to what caused them to gain their abilities is interesting and different. I don’t even know how best to describe the series. It’s just fantastic.

The mood, story, art, it’s all great. Ape Entertainment should have a hit on their hands. I can’t wait to read more and definitely want to see what else Ape has out there. This is over-sized first issue is well worth the buy.
