Wolverine Assembles the New Avengers While Captain America Doom Fight for their Souls as Armageddon Rages On!

This summer, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assemble for a battle that will define their next era in Avengers: Armageddon! The five-issue event series by superstar writer Chip Zdarsky and acclaimed artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar launches in June, and today, fans can learn about issue #3, on sale in August, which teases the team’s new post-Armageddon lineup.

Avengers: Armageddon shakes up the Avengers in a way not seen since Avengers: Disassembled, kicking off when the team assembles to stop Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, A.K.A. Red Hulk, from igniting a global conflict following his takeover of Latveria. The saga is currently being set up in Zdarsky’s hit run of Captain America as well as the Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon limited series which follows Wolverine and Dave Colton, a new Captain America introduced in Zdarsky’s run, as they team up to dismantle an all-new super soldier program. Along the way, the pair will unleash a mysterious power originating from another universe that will shift the tide of the coming battle with Ross—but at a heavy cost.

CIVILIANS RIOT, VILLAINS RISE AND HEROES FALL!

The entire globe is thrown into chaos in Avengers: Armageddon #3. With the rest of the world turning against the Avengers, what will they choose? Stand down or fight against Red Hulk, even as he seems more and more unbeatable? And when an unstable new power takes center stage…the Avengers – and the world – will need all the help they can get! Wolverine sends out the call: AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

Meanwhile, the next arc of Captain America serves a companion to the event, continuing in Captain America #14 with art by Ton Lima. The story sees Captain America, desperate to return to Earth to stop Armageddon, teaming up with Doctor Doom to acquire a weapon powerful enough to defeat their captor: Mephisto!

A SOUL FOR A SOUL…

In Captain America #14, Captain America and Victor Von Doom, bound together in an unfamiliar war zone, are after the ANTIDIVINE – a sword powerful enough to destroy Mephisto. But someone else also has their eyes on the weapon! Can Steve stop Doom’s first love from destroying Victor as his own soul hangs in the balance?

The Next Era of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Begins in Avengers: Armageddon #1

Avengers: Armageddon, a new event series by writer Chip Zdarsky and artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, is set to transform Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a way not seen since Avengers: Disassembled. Spinning out Zdarsky’s current run of Captain America as well as One World Under Doom, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon and more, the long-awaited saga sees some of Marvel’s greatest icons assemble against Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, A.K.A the Red Hulk, whose takeover of Latveria puts the entire world in jeopardy. When the dust settles on the cataclysmic showdown, a new era of Avengers begins, complete with a bold new lineup that includes an all-new hero with unrivaled power. Today, fans can see all the covers for the debut issue and a special sneak peek.

The new preview brings together heroes from all across the Marvel Universe including the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Bucky Barnes, Namor and the recently introduced Captain America, David Colton. The preview also reveals the terrifying new Hulk squad, one of the many way Ross aims to keep Latveria in his tight grip…

In addition to Dike Ruan’s main cover, Avengers: Armageddon #1 will feature variant covers by Jerome Opeña, Skottie Young, Chip Zdarsky, Kaare Andrews, and Jenny Frison. This June, Avengers: Armageddon changes the face of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for a new age! The upcoming limited series by writer Chip Zdarsky and artists Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz spins directly out of Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s run of Captain America, which also kicks off a new arc in June with issue #12.

The current arc sees Captain America accompany the all-new S.H.I.E.L.D. into Latveria to maintain order in Doom’s absence. But Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, A.K.A. Red Hulk, is determined to enact revenge on Latveria, and his actions have dire repercussions, both for Captain America and the world. Armageddon, the next Marvel Comics event, launches this summer, but the exciting stories leading into it are happening right now! Fans can peek ahead at two key Armageddon chapters hitting stands in March with the reveal of Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #2 and Captain America #8.

Armageddon will be written by writer Chip Zdarsky, who is currently laying pivotal groundwork for the event in his acclaimed Captain America run with artists Valerio Schiti, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar. Zdarsky, along with artist Luca Maresca, will also set up the event in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a four-issue prelude series spinning out of recent developments in Captain America and Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion.

The lead-in to Armageddon kicks into high gear in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #2! Doomed 2009 #1 Attempts to Prevent Future Disaster

The Future is Doomed! The world is Doom’s…but does that include the world that is yet to be? A coalition from the future – including OLD MAN LOGAN, RACHEL SUMMERS PHOENIX, BISHOP, COSMIC GHOST RIDER, THE MAESTRO and DEATHLOK say otherwise. But will the arrival of Doom 2099 change the odds for the new Sorcerer Supreme? Is he there to back his past self…or destroy him forever? Doomed 2009 #1 delivers a one-shot that shows one possible future to come.

When it comes to the Marvel Universe and futures, it’s best to not think about it. There’s so many options, so many possibilities, at this point, it feels like one giant “What if.” But, when it came to possible futures, I enjoyed the 2099 line when it first came out, introducing new takes on classic character or teams. It’s been decades since I read them but I still have my copies of Doom 2099 and have itched to go back and read them. Doomed 2009 #1 has me wanting to do that even more.

Written by Frank Tieri, Doomed 2009 #1 has Doom 2099 travel back in time with a team to stop Sorcerer Supreme Doom. He wants to prevent some major event in the future that Doom causes, what that is, we don’t know until the very end. Tieri presents what is basically one giant fight issue with teases of fights that have come before.

The concept of Tieri’s entry isn’t all that new, it echoes what we saw with the Fantastic Four’s battle with Doom in the recent relaunch of their series. It is interesting in some ways to see how Doom of the present deals with the team from the future. Where the comic really nails it is the ending which eventually reveals what Doom 2099 is attempting to prevent. It takes what is an issue that’s one long battle and turns it into something a bit more melancholy. It adds a sadness to Doom 2099 making his attempt to stop Doom in the present a bit more noble.

The art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar is good. With color by Andrew Dalhouse and lettering by Travis Lanham, the comic packs a lot into its pages as the heroes battle it out with Doom. And, the comic changes things up smoothly. It starts as straight sci-fi going into a battle royale and then ending on a tragic note. Each section’s visuals really hone in on what it is and looks solid. The visuals too play off the more comedic moments Tieri throws in there and none of it feels out of place.

Doomed 2009 #1 is an entertaining read adding in an intriguing one-shot chapter into the story. It has me wanting to go back and re-read Doom 2099 and hoping we might get more of the character in the future. It’s not the most vital read for “One World Under Doom,” but one for hardcore fans of the 2099 line.

Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti bring Captain America into the Present Day in Captain America #6

Last month saw the launch of an all-new run of Captain America by Eisner-nominated writer Chip Zdarsky and superstar artist Valerio Schiti. One of most acclaimed Marvel debut issues of the year, the new series kicks off with a five-part saga set shortly after Steve Rogers emerged from his icy slumber, revealing the star-spangled hero’s first confrontation with Doctor Doom. The second arc will start in Captain America #6, on sale in December, and will take place in present day as Captain America deals with the direct aftermath of Doom’s fall, following One World Under Doom. In addition to Schiti, the arc will be drawn by guest artists Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz, a duo making their Marvel Comics debut later this month in Doomed 2099, who kick things off in issue #6. 

The new storyline will introduce four new characters, each representing one of the five permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council: CAPTAIN KINGDOM, representing United Kingdom; CAPTAIN FRANCE, representing France; RED WIDOW, representing Russia; and THE STAR, representing China. Dubbed the “United Captains,” they’ll assemble with Captain America to keep Latveria from falling into chaos, but upon infiltrating the unstable—and highly advanced—country, their true motives will be revealed. Bringing Captain America’s bold new era to present day in full force, the storyline positions him as a pivotal player in determining the current state of the Marvel Universe and is essential reading for major events coming next year.

The aftermath of One World Under Doom has brought Latveria to the brink of civil war. Captain America deploys to protect civilians and investigate rumors of a weapons stockpile—but when the United Nations Security Council adds their own loyal Super-Soldiers to the mix, it becomes clear that everyone wants a piece of Latveria—no matter the cost. With warring factions tearing the country apart and a team of Captains pursuing their own agendas, can Captain America hope to bring peace to Latveria? And is that even what his handlers want?

Schiti’s brings his skills to Captain America, modernizing Cap’s suit and creating fantastic, instantly iconic costumes for the four new United Captains, each of which will be spotlighted on design variant covers for Captain America #6-9.
