Pick(s) of the Week: Buzzkill #1 and so Much More

buzzkill #1It’s a new week and that means a new week of comic books! This week is a rare event, where each of us has the same comic on all of our lists, Buzzkill #1 out this week from Dark Horse.

Ruben is not your average alcoholic; he’s an unstoppable superhero who derives his powers from imbibing MASSIVE amounts of alcohol. After all the disasters it’s caused in his personal life, he’s ready to get clean . . . and the city’s supervillains couldn’t be happier!

Doesn’t something about this just sound fun? The premise sounds over the top, and ridiculous, but at the same time, funny and entertaining and who knows maybe we’ll get a new take on the dysfunctional super hero while we’re at it.

The comic is written by Donny Cates and Mark Reznicek with art by Geoff Shaw.

Check out below for the rest of the team’s weekly picks!

Andrew:

Top Pick: The X-Files Season 10 #4 (IDW Publishing) – I just picked up this series and really wish it was a monthly run. Joe Harris stays true to the characters and continuity. Highly recommend.

Buzzkill #1 (Dark Horse) – A superhero that derives his power from consuming massive amounts of alcohol and wants to get sober? I’ll bite.

Kiss Me Satan #1 (Dark Horse) – The werewolf/vampire theme might be a little played out, but I’m always willing to give a first issue a shot, especially from Dark Horse.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray Vol. 1 (Image) – This comic MIGHT be my favorite series of 2013. Fantastically written and illustrated. This is the kind of book that can cross borders and hook non comic readers.

Brett:

Top Pick: Buzzkill #1 (Dark Horse) – You can find my reasons above, but overall the comic sounds fun and entertaining and most importantly fresh.

Bravest Warriors #12 (BOOM! Studios/kaBOOM) – It’s a tough call as to which I like more, this series or Adventure Time, but you can’t go wrong with either. This one though gets me to chuckle just a bit more with it’s more adult humor.

Daredevil #31 (Marvel) – Mark Waid continues to churn out one of the best Marvel comics’ consistently. With the long main arc finally over, it’ll be interesting to see where he takes this series next.

Superior Spider-Man #18 (Marvel) – Dan Slott has been crushing it with his new take on Spider-Man. Again it feels new and fresh. There’s those key words again.

Zero #1 (Image) – Ales Kot brings us this very hyped series that takes on “war” with self-contained stories and a rotating group of artists. Everything I’ve seen has me intrigued.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray Vol. 1 (Image) – Easily one of the best mini-series of the year. Thankfully we’re getting more of this acclaimed series.

Scott:

Top Pick: Zero #1 (Image Comics) – The idea of a war comic telling mostly self-contained stories with a rotating team of artists is so brilliant, and I can’t wait to see where it goes. Ales Kot is definitely a creator to watch.

Buzzkill #1 (Dark Horse) – I’m totally unfamiliar with both creators, but I love the premise. It sounds like it could be a ridiculous, funny, and incisive look at both super hero comics and alcoholism.

Century West (Image Comics) – I’m not sure I’d call myself a big fan of Howard Chaykin, but I’m still really excited to see his take on the old west. Knowing him, it’ll be over the top, hopefully in the best way possible.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Batwoman Vol 3: World’s Finest (DC Comics) – It’s unfortunate that the creative team behind this book had to leave under such frustrating circumstances, so take a minute and read this hardcover. The art is breathtaking, and while the story meanders a little, there’s action and intrigue to spare.

Five Ghosts Becomes an Ongoing Series

The Five Ghosts team returns to Image Comics for another arc, following the unmissable September release of the first trade paperback collecting the original Five Ghosts five-issue miniseries. The fan-revered debut by burgeoning creators Frank J. Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham has readers primed for even more eye-popping adventure as the book is made into an ongoing series, starting in October.

Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray follows the story of infamous treasure hunter Fabian Gray, who, after being bewitched by the mysterious power of “The Dreamstone,” must battle the unwieldy power of five archetypal ghosts that both possess and guide him. Lost in forgotten cities, Fabian faces enemy shadows in a mesmerizing series riddled with literary allusions.

The sixth issue of the self-declared “literary pulp adventure” series will borrow the talents of guest artist Garry Brown to reveal the next chapter of Fabian’s story.

Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray #6 will be in stores on October 30, and is currently available for pre-order from the August issue of Previews (Diamond code AUG130582).

The first volume of the series, Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray , Vol. 1 TP will be published on September 18 and is available for order (Diamond code JUL130450).

“BODIES IN MOTION TEND TO STAY IN MOTION…”

Teen future-cop DaYoung Johansson hits 1980s NYC like a meteor. People can’t get enough of the Rocket Girl: she’s fighting crime, saving citizens, and causing a sensation. But she’s also trying to right a wrong in a mystery so deep it could change the future forever. There’s a lot more going on here than anyone knows about — and it might be more than the 15-year-old super detective can handle.

“A time-travelling teen police force is the stuff my dreams are made of. It’s drawn elegantly and masterfully by Amy Reeder. It looks like she and Brandon Montclare came up with the perfect story to go wild on.”

Review: Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray #5

20130731-154329.jpgIt is with a heavy heart that I review the fifth and final issue of Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray. Although the series resumes this Fall (including a stand alone issue in October), I am still crestfallen that this maiden voyage has come to an end.

As the story arc concludes, Fabian faces his last test, and we finally find out not only how the dreamstone became a part of him but also how his sister, Silvia, was lost to the supernatural world. Though love conquers all (even between siblings), it is now apparent that guilt, on many different levels, fuels Gray’s quest to find her.

Writer Frank J. Barbiere and artist Chris Mooneyham have yet to disappoint. What could easily have been pitched as a one and done graphic novel, was instead turned into a five issue tour de force that leaves a monthly run with unlimited room to grow. Though the last issue answered some key questions, I still want to know more about Fabian’s loyal sidekick Sebastian.

Mooneyham’s artwork is nearly flawless, particularly two full-page illustrations that show our hero’s ghostly inner demons. I’m reaching when I find something to complain about, but I still despise Iago, who looks like a Disney villain with his overgrown monk cut and hyperextended smile. Consequently, I wasn’t wild about the cover.

Barbiere and Mooneyham took a chance on a pulp adventure in a market that is becoming filled with 1930s heroes battling world-domination-seeking nazis. Through premise, script, and art they’ve set the standard for all others to emulate. November can’t come soon enough.

Review: Five Ghosts #4

fiveghosts04_coverI hope that, by now, most readers are either aware of or avid fans of pulp adventurer Fabian Gray and his fantastical journeys. Only four issues in and this Barbiere/Mooneyham collaboration continues to thrive.  In Part Four, we find our tortured protagonist submerged in a mystical spring in an attempt to confront and control, through a series of tests, the five apparitions that have invaded his being.  All the while his trustworthy sidekick, Sebastian, and newfound pretty-sure-he’s-a-good-guy-but-kinda-sketchy friend Zhang Guo, defend the Forgotten City from Iago’s onslaught.

While I’m quite aware of the space constraints writers face in this literary medium, I wish some of Fabian’s tests were a bit longer and more fleshed out.  In his defense, Barbiere was able to incorporate some poignant messages, particularly in the Samurai scene (did the mask make anyone else instantly think of Sucker Punch?).

Mooneyham’s art continues to match, and sometimes exceed, the brilliance of the storyline. Although I could have done without Iago’s sword-licking scene. I don’t know what it is about tongues in comic books, but if they aren’t drawn right they look…dare I say…comical. Lauren Affe’s muted oranges, grays, and yellows beautifully complete the picture…all other colors are just an afterthought.

I mistakenly read all four issues in one sitting. I am now aching for Part Five. If the next book is as good as its predecessors, this series will compete with Helheim as one of the best reads of the year.
