For those who love furious action and incredible artwork: Infinite Kung Fu by Kagan McLeod, and The Homeland Directive by Robert Venditti & Mike Huddleston

The Homeland Directive: an addictive page-turner that feels like an edge-of-your-seat theater experience.” — MTV Splash Page

For moms who still know how to have a good time: Underwire by Jennifer Hayden

For small-town folks, family members, or hockey fans: Essex County by Jeff Lemire

“A rich tapestry … Mr. Lemire infuses his characters with vivid details that make them burst to life.” — The New York Times

For fantasy fans & animal lovers: Owly by Andy Runton & Korgi (including the new Book 3) by Christian Slade

For 20-30somethings with mixed feelings about growing up: Any Empire by Nate Powell

“Powell’s exceptional visual-storytelling gift transforms a potentially obvious antiwar parable into a ravishingly beautiful, emotionally resonant, thoughtful, and provocative work of art.” — Booklist (starred review)

For middle schoolers (and middle-schoolers at heart): Pirate Penguin vs Ninja Chicken by Ray Friesen

Pirate Penguin: Each panel is punctuated with so many quips and jokes that they don’t work to form a narrative so much as they collectively embody an extended Abbot and Costello routine.” — Graphic Novel Reporter

For early readers, or kids who love to hear books read out loud: Johnny Boo & Dragon Puncher by James Kochalka

“Just the right blend of sarcasm, silliness, and action to appeal to both child readers and to adults reading this with their kids.” — School Library Journal’s Good Comics For Kids

“Reading Blankets is like reliving your youth as you wander through the artist’s personal trials of fundamentalist religion and teenage heart-break in small-town America… The Best Graphic Novel of the Decade.” — Paste Magazine

“Debeurme gets underneath what makes these young lovers tick, and is realistic enough to realize that they’re too inexperienced and impulsive to fix each other. Still, the love affair in Lucille burns bright, illuminating two lives.” — The AV Club

For savvy hippies and pop-culture vultures: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century and Alan Moore’s Dodgem Logic (full set)

“Fans won’t be let down by the latest instalment of this clever, lurid saga.” — The Guardian

Jeff Lemire Week at Canada Reads!

The time is fast approaching for the great Canada Reads book battle!

The competition (featuring Essex County as the first ever graphic novel selection) will determine the essential Canadian novel of the decade, and airs February 7, 8 and 9 on CBC Radio One.

In preparation, Canada Reads just celebrated Jeff Lemire Week! The celebration includes a video from Essex County‘s celebrity champion, indie rocker Sara Quin, testifying to her love of the book, an essay from Jeff explaining the genesis of Essex County and his feelings about revisiting that world, an interview with the great Toronto comic shop The Beguiling about what makes Essex County so great, an essay from CBC book blogger Brian Francis offering his opinion of the book’s strengths, and Sara’s appearance on the Canada Reads podcast to discuss her battle strategy!

Whew! By the way, all this interest in Essex County has sent us well into a new printing — which is in stock now, so by all means grab a copy of the book if you haven’t read it yet. And let’s all cheer Jeff, Sara, and Essex County in the on-air Canada Reads competition, February 7-9!

LUCILLE by Ludovic Debeurme

LUCILLE by Ludovic Debeurme

— $29.95 (US)
— 544-page deluxe softcover graphic novel with french flaps
— ISBN 978-1-60309-073-5

Winner of the René Goscinny Prize and the Angoulême Essential Award!

After years of acclaim in Europe, graphic novelist Ludovic Debeurme makes his English-language debut with a book of quiet grace and staggering emotional power.

This rich and intimate story follows two teenagers, Lucille and Arthur, as they struggle with the complex legacies inherited from their families: legacies of illness and pride, of despair and hope. Somehow two lonely misfits form an instant connection, and with the intoxicating boldness of youth, they journey together across Europe, discovering each other, discovering themselves, and hoping against all odds to make their own destiny.

Lucille is more than a story about anorexia, alcoholism, and adolescence. It’s a story of love amidst tragedy, full of the halting awkwardness of life and the operatic grandeur of teenage emotion.

Eric Skillman’s writing debut is a fresh spin on classic noir tropes, with intricate plotting, dialogue to die for, and charm to burn. Jhomar Soriano brings the tale to life with an elegant combination of bold chiaroscuro and gorgeous ink washes. Altogether, it’s an irresistable trip to the dark s

ESSEX COUNTY named one of Canada Reads’ Top 5 Novels of the Decade!

The CBC’s Canada Reads, a nationwide book club program in which 5 books compete (each championed by a Canadian celebrity) to be named the #1 book of the year, has officially announced the final 5. Jeff Lemire’s phenomenal Essex County has made the cut, becoming not simply the first Top Shelf book, but the first graphic novel ever, to be in Canada Reads! This year, the Canada Reads program bears the theme “the essential Canadian novels of the past decade,” so the honor is even more prestigious.

The celebrity champion of Essex County has also officially been announced: indie rocker Sara Quin, one-half of the award-winning band Tegan and Sara ! Along with Sara’s spirited defense of the book in the Canada Reads broadcasts, we can expect plenty of attention on author Jeff Lemire, ranging from this Q&A to a variety of podcasts, interviews, and more!

The selection of Essex County for this program is a huge honor for Jeff Lemire, Top Shelf Productions, and the comics industry at large. It poses an opportunity for an entire country to discover the power of Jeff’s work, and to debate its values against four other excellent books. Our deepest congratulations to Jeff and the other finalists!

Canada Reads encourages everyone to spend this winter reading all 5 books, with various programming allowing readers to get to know the finalists better, all building up to the official competition in February 2011. Happy reading, and may the best book win!

ESSEX COUNTY named one of Canada Reads’ Top 40 Essential Canadian Novels of the Decade!

Now we need your help to push it over the top!

Jeff Lemire’s Essex County trilogy, now collected into a single beautiful volume, is more than just a great graphic novel. It’s a love letter to the farms of Essex County where Jeff grew up, to the wider province of Ontario in both its urban and rural communities, and to the nation of Canada as a whole — its wintry cold and human warmth, its love of hockey, and its rich history.

That’s why it’s been named one of the 40 novels honored by the CBC’s prestigious Canada Reads program — i.e. the Top 40 Essential Canadian Novels of the Decade! And that’s not all: you can head to the Canada Reads web site, now through November 7, and vote for your pick for the final Top 10 list! Anyone with a web browser is eligible to vote, so head over there, check out all the great nominees, and make your voices heard!

Let’s rally as a comics community to put a graphic novel in the Top 10! Vote here:
