The CBLDF Presents: Elephantmen: Shots

Image Comics and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) join forces once again to bring readers an Elephantmen one-shot collection in Shots #1, written by Richard Starkings and drawn by Dougie Braithwaite, Ian Churchill, Boo Cook, Shaky Kane, Moritat, Tim Sale, and Dave Sim. The proceeds of this book will go toward helping protect the First Amendment rights of comics creators, publishers, and retailers.

Led by Tim Sale’s nine-page “When the Night Comes,” this special Elephantmen: Shots #1 collects all the Elephantmen strips from Hero Comics, Liberty, and The Thought Bubble Anthology. The collection also features the hard-to-find Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, and Marine Man crossovers and beautiful covers by J. Scott Campbell and Tim Sale!

All proceeds earned from Elephantmen: Shots #1 will go toward supporting the CBLDF’s important work defending the rights on which our community depends.

In a release Starkings said:

I’m sure I wasn’t the only comic book creator affected by the Charlie Hebdo massacre earlier this year. It was a deeply shocking and terrifying event that sent ripples throughout the cartooning world. It really made me realize the importance of supporting organizations like the CBLDF, who stand vigilant for cartoonists whether there’s a traumatic event capturing our attention or not. I counted up the strips that we’d produced for The Hero Initiative, Thought Bubble and, of course CBLDF’s own Liberty Annual and decided that, rather than do nothing but worry, I could put out a special issue of Elephantmen to benefit the CBLDF. Eric Stephenson at Image Comics agreed and… voila!

Elephantmen: Shots #1 arrives in stores on May 27.

Something Strange From Dave Sim!

Prolific creator Dave Sim’s meta-adventure through the history of photo-realistic artwork, the career and death of Alex Raymond, and much more, will be published by IDW! Sim’s originally self-published work is being completely remastered, redrawn, and reworked before it sees release as its own 18-issue series.

Originally serialized within the pages of the self-published Glamourpuss #1-26 (2008-2012), The Strange Death Of Alex Raymond is an as yet uncompleted work-in-progress in which Dave Sim investigates the history of photorealism in comics, specifically focusing on the work of comic-strip artist Alex Raymond the circumstances of his death on 6 September 1956 at the wheel of fellow artist Stan Drake’s Corvette.

This is on top of the other Sim projects IDW has in the pipeline, such as the Complete Book of Cerebus Covers, the digital/audio version of High Society and The Complete Zootanapuss Artist’s Edition.

Dave Sim’s distinguished career in comics began with his self-published hit Cerebus. An essential series that evolved through grounded and mature subject material, Cerebus is a modern classic that catalyzed Sim’s career as well as the comics industry on the whole. As a vocal proponent of self-publishing, Sim has spent much of his career improving and exploring his craft through his own self-published projects. More recently, Sim has contributed his iconic style to various covers at IDW, including The Colonized, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and Doctor Who.

IDW Announces Creative Team for Thunder Agents!

At WonderCon, IDW finally unveiled the creative team that will be re-launching the legendary Thunder Agents this August.

Phil Hester will be writing with Andrea Di Vito providing interiors as the dynamic Thunder Agents go about putting an end to global evil before punching out for the day.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Andrea on this book,” said Hester. “His style hits all the right notes, combining the best of modern storytelling sensibilities with classic super hero dynamism. Our goal is to preserve what was unique about the original Wally Wood-helmed run, but inject it with the high-octane action and resonant character development modern readers demand. Andrea‘s work will convey to readers the sense of excitement we feel as creators.”

“I am very excited about the creative team assembled for the IDW launch of Thunder Agents,” said David M. Matthews, Managing Director of Radiant Assets, owner of the property.  “I have a great respect and appreciation for Phil and Andrea’s work, and I’m ecstatic over having Jerry Ordway and Dave Sim contributing covers.  It really doesn’t get much better than that!”

“Let me tell you, nobody’s more excited to be doing bona fide superheroes at IDW than I am,” said Thunder Agents editor Tom Waltz. “And to have it be a classic property like Thunder Agents and have it being kicked off by the massively talented duo of Phil Hester and Andrea Di Vito, not to mention covers by living legends Jerry Ordway and Dave Sim?! Consider me over the moon!”

Aliens and Zombies Invade IDW!

This spring at IDW, where there’s aliens, there’s zombies! In The Colonized, a new four-issue series launching in April, writer Chris Ryall, artist Drew Moss, and cover artist Dave Sim explore the arrival of these strangely interwoven threats in a secluded separatist town in Montana.

In the Carbon Falls Collective, Huxley Robertson is dealing with the passing of his father and pushing against old guard objections as he attempts to push the separatist camp into becoming a fully sustainable green town. As if circumstances weren’t volatile enough, a craft full of alien explorers inadvertently re-animates the town’s dead! Throw a rogue ATF agent into the mix, on the hunt for the town’s weapons cache, and let’s just say this is a bad time for the otherwise sleepy Carbon Falls Collective to be cut off from the outside world.

This potent mix of horror, drama, and black humor comes from Chris Ryall, no stranger to either aliens (Groom Lake) or zombies (Zombies vs. Robots), working with illustrator Drew Moss (Zombies vs. Robots Annual), and Locke & Key colorist Jay Fotos, with legendary Cerebus creator Dave Sim providing covers for the four-issue affair.

In addition to Sim’s covers, each issue will also offer special subscription-only variants from stellar artists like John Byrne–who tackles issue one–Gabriel Rodriguez, Zach Howard, and a player-to-be-named-soon.

THE COLONIZED #1 ($3.99, 32 pages; full color) will be available in stores in April 2013.
