SDCC 2024: Ronda Rousey, Mike Deodato, Jr.,and Axel Alonso Discuss Rousey’s Debut Graphic Novel in a Panel Moderated by Dave Bautista

Expecting the Unexpected SDCC

Penned by Rousey and edited by Alonso, with art by Deodato, Jr., the graphic novel draws on Rousey’s incredible career in the ring and pairs it with Deodato’s martial arts background to create the most accurate and action-packed fight scenes in comics. The duo developed a unique process to ensure the graphic novel’s fight scenes are as accurate as possible with Rousey choreographing and filming the scenes herself as source material for Deodato’s art. Attendees will get a sneak peek into that process while learning more about their collaboration.

Her codename: “Mom.” With a fake baby bump filled with guns, she’s built a reputation as one of the deadliest hitwomen on the planet. But on the verge of her big break in the criminal underworld, Mom makes a fateful decision: sleeping with a potential target (who just so happens to be a top-ranked assassin himself). A few weeks later, Mom finds that her codename is about to become a lot more literal. What follows is a wild mashup of action, adventure, comedy, and romance as a newly pregnant Mom with a bounty on her head fights off wave after wave of assassins, falls in love with her baby daddy, and decides how to face her personal and professional predicament. EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED sets a new bar for the authenticity of fight scenes through a unique creative process developed by Rousey, Deodato, and AWA.

The Expecting the Unexpected Kickstarter launches on July 25. Those interested in learning more about the campaign and its reward offerings can sign up to get project news and updates, and to be notified as soon as the campaign is live.

Dave Bautista Will Star in Dogtown based on Jason Pearson’s Comic Body Bags

Dave Bautista is going from one comic franchise to another and has been tapped to star in Dogtown. The film is based on the comic series Body Bags by Jason Pearson. The movie by Bold Films will be written by Kyle Ward who wrote John Wick 2.

Bautista will play Mack Delgado, a professional bounty hunter who is so tough he’s a “body bagger.” Things get shaken up when his teenage daughter he never know shows up on his doorstep to reconnect.

This is Bold Films’ first comic based film and is a step for the company which is moving into larger budget films. The film is looking towards Deadpool for its tone mixing action and humor. The story though is about a father and daughter.

Bold Films is hoping to fill the gap of lower budget comic films that might be an alternative to the spandex dominating screens. Bold’s previous films include Whiplash, Drive and Nightcrawler.

A director hasn’t been attached.

The comic was originally published as part of Dark Horse Comics’ Blanc Noir line of books and was produced by Gaijin Studios. The series saw controversy due to the teenage (14-years-old) lead being rather buxom. The series was then reprinted by Image Comics’ imprint, 12-Gauge Comics. In total, the series debuted in 1996 from Dark Horse with a 4-issue mini-series, saw a 12-page story in Dark Horse Presents Annual 1997, a 6-page story in Dark Horse Maverick 2000, Body Bags: 3 the Hard Way was published by Image Comics in 2006, and Body Bags: One Shot was published by Image in 2008.

Official photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has started, and I couldn’t be more stoked.

My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I’m glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined.

The last few days around here with him and our other new cast members, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan, have been some of the best of my life. I never thought anyone was missing from our island of misfit toys, but now that these folks are here there feels like there was.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close are all returning.

We’ll have more surprises for you in the coming months. But, for now, this will have to do.

I have to get back to set!

Have a great day, everybody.
