Z Nation: Sea of Death – Part Two! Specialist Israel Johnson and Private Edie Cutter find themselves trapped aboard the floating zombie fortress The Empress of the Seas as the world around them descends into starvation and chaos. Their mission is to retrieve the food substitute Soylent Z and bring it back to the survivors led by Charles Garnett in Fort Benning, but first, they’ll have to steal it back from the sadistic Captain and his Crew.

Z Nation #2 picks up shortly where the last issue left off. Now stuck aboard the Empress of the seas, Isreal and Edie do their best to remain hidden, but they manage to run into the ships cleaner and his helpers. That twist gives them a slight chance of getting themselves and the Soylent Z off the ship undetected. Yet, when a navy ship approaches they get spotted. Bringing one question to light, will they survive? The issue, written by Craig Engler and Fred Van Lente, perfectly ups the tension and mixes in action to entertain. Two two manages to reveal some the history of how the ships’ current crew came to power along with revealing interesting developments on how the ship is powered, managing to steal the spotlight in the process.

The art by Edu Menna manages to shift some since this issue takes place entirely on board the Empresses of the Seas. It still feels consistent from the first issue and delivers a great visual of the world of Z Nation.

Review: Z Nation #1

ZNation-01-Cov-A-Medri

A prequel set in the world of Syfy and Asylum‘s scripted hit zombie series Z Nation, Black Summer is as bad as the apocalypse gets. A worldwide drought and famine when most of the surviving population dies and turns zombie. As the remnants of humanity cling to existence, fan favorite Charles Garnett returns to send a new team on a desperate new mission: Retrieve a possibly untouched cache of the food substitute Soylent Z from Galveston, Texas.

But when mission leader Israel Johnson and his small team arrive in Galveston, they’ll face a threat unlike anything ever seen before in the zombie genre. Featuring Z Nation’s signature blend of horror, humor and heart, Sea of Death is the start of a new six-issue miniseries.

The premiere issue of Z Nation by writers Craig Engler and Fred Van Lente manages to capture the spirit of the television show well. At the same time, it manages to introduce a few new characters (so far). The series reveals the start of Black Summer, which the television show has mentioned. I’m curious to see if other characters from the show will make an appearance or not and how much it’ll all tie together.

The art by Edu Menna manages to do the same thing the story does. It manages to capture the struggle of the survivors, as they cope with their existence bringing the visuals of the show to the comic page. The first issue brings a decent amount of gore, flowing action, and violence. There’s also some inspired melee weapon redesigns that merge raw killing power, with something a little more medieval.
