Review: Z Nation #2

ZNation-02-Cov-A-Medri

Z Nation: Sea of Death – Part Two! Specialist Israel Johnson and Private Edie Cutter find themselves trapped aboard the floating zombie fortress The Empress of the Seas as the world around them descends into starvation and chaos. Their mission is to retrieve the food substitute Soylent Z and bring it back to the survivors led by Charles Garnett in Fort Benning, but first, they’ll have to steal it back from the sadistic Captain and his Crew.

Z Nation #2 picks up shortly where the last issue left off. Now stuck aboard the Empress of the seas, Isreal and Edie do their best to remain hidden, but they manage to run into the ships cleaner and his helpers. That twist gives them a slight chance of getting themselves and the Soylent Z off the ship undetected. Yet, when a navy ship approaches they get spotted. Bringing one question to light, will they survive? The issue, written by Craig Engler and Fred Van Lente, perfectly ups the tension and mixes in action to entertain. Two two manages to reveal some the history of how the ships’ current crew came to power along with revealing interesting developments on how the ship is powered, managing to steal the spotlight in the process.

The art by Edu Menna manages to shift some since this issue takes place entirely on board the Empresses of the Seas. It still feels consistent from the first issue and delivers a great visual of the world of Z Nation.
