Magnetic Press to Release Daomu. We’ve Got the Scoop!

daomuMagnetic Press has landed another fantastic series. The upstart publisher has announced that it’s in the final stages of production on a hardcover graphic novel adaptation of the best-selling novel series Daomu, written by Chinese author Xu “Kennedy” Lei. The adaptation, produced and designed by James Zhang’s Concept Art House, was overseen by Kennedy Xu himself, and introduces his popular world of international tomb robbing to the western audience for the first time.

The original novel on which the graphic novel is based, Dao Mu Bi Ji, sold over 3 million copies as of 2010, with an estimated 20 million copies in circulation on the black market. Its massive popularity has spawned numerous volumes in the series, defining an entire sub-genre of imitators, and making Xu one of the most in-demand novelists in China, where he is considered “China’s Stephen King.” Several film and television projects are currently in development.

The book tells the story of a young Chinese American, Sean Wu, who is called back to China when his estranged father reappears, only to be murdered in front of him. He is quickly pulled into a web of mystery and intrigue stretching back many generations, introducing him to the legacy of the Daomu, a group of international tomb robbers who race through a globe-spanning labyrinth of ancient catacombs in seek of ageless artifacts that could either save or destroy humanity.

Illustrated in lush, cinematic, painted panels by Ken Chou and his team of artists at Concept Art House, the graphic novel adaptation brings Kennedy Xu’s epic universe to gritty, tactile life. With a background in cinematic production design for film and video games, the graphic novel’s presentation eschews traditional “comic book” art in favor of richly defined painted detail.

Partially published by Image Comics in 2011, this new edition will offer the complete story along with bonus artwork and production design. Daomu will represent the first book published under the Evertold Inc banner, a label designed by James Zhang to bring exciting adventures to visually breathtaking life.

The 244-page, 8.5” x 11”, hardcover edition will feature a soft-touch cover laminate with intricate glossed filigree and a ribbon book mark and will be released in December.

I remember when the series launched, and praised it back then, and can’t wait until I’m able to read the complete story.

Review – Shrapnel: Hubris #2

There’s a lot going on in the second issue of Shrapnel: Hubris #2 and I’m torn on what I think.  The issue is published by Radical Publishing, created by Mark Long and Nick Sagan, written by Sagan and Clinnette Minnis with art by Concept Art House and the cover by Stephan Martiniere.  The second issue picks up with the first and takes us through the build up to Captain Narayan’s assault on the Solar Alliance.

Consumed with advancing their War of Unity on multiple fronts, the Solar Alliance may be vulnerable to an audacious, high-risk assault on one of their most valued possessions.  So rests the hopes of oppressed Helots across the System as a plot against the oldest extraplanetary colony moves forward.  Once loyal marines now turned freedom fighters, Captain Narayan, Colonel Rossi and their troops have a golden chance to slow down the enemy war machine…but at what cost?

I almost thinks there’s too much going on in this issue with a lot of cutting and back and forth.  Like another Radical title I reviewed the blacks in the art made it very difficult to figure out exactly what was going on and at times figure out who is who.  Overall, the story is entertaining.  The world is pretty cool with a hint of Total Recall.  When I could make out the art, it’s beautiful and really nice to look at.  There’s just points where there’s a lot of black and other dark colors too, making it hard to make at what’s what.

Like the first issue, I feel like I was missing something.  It was just hard to literally see what was going on at times.  Also like the first issue the story doesn’t focus on the action of the attacks but instead the lead up and chess playing that occurs before.  An interesting take and one I really appreciate.

Image Comics and Concept Art House Bring China’s Best-Selling Daomu Series to the U.S.

Official Press Release

Image Comics and Concept Art House Bring China’s Best-Selling Daomu Series to the U.S.

First issue to arrive in stores this December

BERKELEY, CA – July 26, 2010 – Image Comics and Concept Art House announced plans to release a series of Daomu comics based on one of China’s best-selling novel series. This will be Daomu’s debut in the U.S., following a successful graphic novel launch in China earlier this year. The upcoming comic book series is the first of several Daomu releases planned to include games, an animated series, and a feature film.

Daomu, which translates to “tomb raider,” explores an underground world that has been active in China for thousands of years. After witnessing his father’s violent murder, Sean Liu discovers that his family belongs to a secret society of tomb raiders. Led by his uncle, Sean joins an elite team of Daomu to go deep underground in search of answers. Who are they? Who—or what—killed Sean’s father? And what horrors await beneath the earth’s surface? With a distinctive digital art style and high-energy adventures steeped in Chinese tradition and superstition, the comic series will follow Sean’s coming of age as a modern-day tomb raider and his quest to uncover the truth behind his father’s death.

The Daomu Bi Ji or “tomb raider’s journal” novel series on which the comics are based has become a sensation in China since its debut in 2007, reaching well over 20 million fans. Concept Art House, a leading digital art and entertainment company with a focus on transmedia storytelling, is responsible for the popular novel’s conversion to graphic format. Their first Daomu graphic novel released in Asia in early 2010 and quickly secured the #2 spot on Dangdang.com, China’s leading ecommerce website. Though Western audiences have long embraced Japanese comics and cartoons, Daomu’s arrival in the U.S. is a first for a high-profile Chinese entertainment property.

“The quality of comics in China is exceptional,” says Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “Daomu is no exception. Daomu has exemplary digital art and an outstanding story. We’re excited to be bringing this amazing graphic novel to the United States for its first English translation.”

“American comics are extremely popular among Chinese comic book fans due to their great stories and amazing artwork. We believe the American audience will love Daomu for the same reasons,” says James Zhang, Concept Art House’s CEO. “Image is a great partner, not only because they understand quality art and story, but also because they truly respect the creator’s vision. We’re thrilled to be working with Image to introduce Daomu to the U.S.”

Intended for readers ages 13 and up, the first Daomu comic book will release this winter. To learn more, visit Image Comics at http://www.imagecomics.com.

Review – Shrapnel: Hubris #1

Bookmark and Share

I’m still fairly new to Radical’s line of comic books.  They definitely stand out with their packaging and art.  For $4.99 you get 64 pages of high quality product.  Shrapnel: Hubris is the follow up to Shrapnel: Aristeia Rising. Written Nick  Sagan and Clinnette Minnis with art by Concept Art House, the story follows the last free colony in the solar system as they’re besieged from orbit.

The last free colony in the Solar System has yet to fall, but how long can it withstand the siege? Under constant barrage from orbit and kept from replenishing much-needed supplies by a planetary blockade, the colonists of Venus find themselves in desperate circumstances. But unwilling to let their stand be in vain, the surprise hero of the war—notorious ex-marine Vijaya “Sam” Narayan—must reverse their fortunes before time runs out once and for all.

While I really enjoyed the first issue, I can’t help but feel I was missing something not having read the first series.  Even missing that, the science fiction war setting is a nice change of pace focusing on relationships and interactions between characters instead of mindless action.

Radical prides itself on producing quality product and this series definitely falls into that category.
