April ShowersAfter reading your comic book have you ever felt like it was just killing a tree?  Do you want to do something good for the environment for the pounds of paper sitting in your long boxes?  Sprout Home is answering the call with comic books you can plant after reading.

The comics themselves are short, but it’s a cool idea.  For $9.50 you’re able to plant your comic and grow and wild flower garden.  It’s perfect timing for the coming of Spring.

A Whole New TCJ.COM

Official Press Release

A WHOLE NEW TCJ.COM

MARCH 7, 2011, SEATTLE, WAThe Comics Journal is proud to announce the relaunch of TCJ.com with new editorial oversight.

The editorial team that is taking over are Dan Nadel and Tim Hodler. Together they co-founded the Eisner-nominated magazine and blog Comics Comics with cartoonist Frank Santoro in 2006. They published four print issues and the web edition quickly grew into one of the most vital forums for critical and historical discussion of comics, marked by contributions from some of the leading cartoonists and writers in the field.

The Comics Journal print magazine has chronicled the comics medium since it’s first publication in 1976. It has been a leading force of journalism exploring both the facets of the comics industry and the artistic value of the books. Releasing over 300 issues, The Journal is changing face as well with an over 600-page tome of criticism and interviews for issue 301.

The new TCJ.com will continue this tradition by offering an online magazine for interviews, criticism, history and ideas in a concise, beautifully designed format. The site will feature multiple book reviews every week, making it a clearinghouse for the latest critical responses to comics and graphic novels from all over the spectrum.

There is a myriad of contributing writers offering a wide a to the new TCJ.com, all bringing together leading voices from literary critics, to pop culture journalists, to comics reviewers. Expect to see writing from Richard Gehr, Nicole Rudick, Jesse Pearson, Andrew Leland, Frank Santoro, Jeet Heer, Ken Parille, R. Fiore, Joe McCulloch, Chris Mautner, Ryan Holmberg, Gary Groth, and many others.

Along with featuring long form articles on all aspects of the medium from leading contemporary writers, TCJ.com will also host a monthly diary feature, in which an artist (or other comics figure) takes us through a week of their life in prose, pictures or cartoons, one day at a time. This column is kicking off with Vanessa Davis, followed by Brandon Graham, then Joyce Farmer, with many more to come.

The new TCJ.com is focused on bringing the magazine’s archive to a new online readership. With holdings including hundreds of interviews with the leading cartoonists of the 20th century and serve as a living record of the development of the comics medium. Beginning March 1, and rolling out over several months, each issue of The Comics Journal will be made available in its entirety to subscribers. Non-subscribers will have the opportunity to sample highlights from many of the issues as well.

Dan Nadel is the publisher of the acclaimed PictureBox Inc, which has released graphic novels, art books, and novels by the likes Gary Panter, Charles Willeford, Yuichi Yokoyama, and Wilco. He has also written two of the most vital recent books on comics history: Art Out of Time: Unknown Comics Visionaries, 1900-1969 and Art in Time: Unknown Comic Book Adventures, 1940-1980. Nadel won a Grammy Award for his art direction of Wilco’s A Ghost is Born album package, and currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

Tim is a writer and editor who has been published in Bookforum, Details, New York Magazine, and the Ganzfeld, among other places.

Pick of the Week – 27 #4

It’s the final issue for the first volume of Charles Soule‘s Image and Shadowline comic 27.  The series is a crazy series focused on music and magic.  It’s hard to explain, but the original story and fantastic art has us drawn in.  Here’s hoping for a second volume.

  1. 27 #4 – It’s the final issue for the first volume of this fantastic series.  Do yourself a favor and try to grab all four issues if you haven’t already.
  2. The Walking Dead #82 – Eighty-two issues and the series is still strong.  How Robert Kirkman continues to put out such quality blows my mind.
  3. X-Men: Legacy #246 – X-Men in an alternate reality?  What’s not to like?  It’s the latest epic “X” tale and I have no idea where it’s going.
  4. New Avengers #10 – Bendis’s banter is fantastic and the series is entertaining.
  5. Sigil #1 – I missed the whole Crossgen line the first time, so it’ll be interesting to see what Marvel does with it.

Convention season has kicked off with the end of the Emerald City Comicon.  Now the focus is on C2E2 and already hints of announcements coming from there.  As always, we can’t get to every story, but here’s what other sites thought would be good to cover.

Around the Blogs:

Comics Beat – DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: January 2011 – It’s DC’s January sales breakdown.

Bleeding Cool – DC Gold And Silver Jewelery From Down Under – I’m tempted to grab one of those Green Lantern rings.

USA Today – First Look: Super-creators pair up for ‘The Infinite’ – Liefeld and Kirkman together on a comic.  Should be pretty interesting.

Dread Central – Exclusive: Andrew Lincoln Talks The Walking Dead – Is the second season here yet?

Bleeding Cool – Marvel Sold Separate Film Licenses  For Amazing Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man Because Licensing Department Thought They Were Two Separate Characters? – The headline pretty much sums that one up.

Around the Tubes Reviews:

Cartoon World – Batman: The Cult

SciFiChick – Cowboys & Aliens

Blogomatic 3000 – Fables Vol. 14 – Witches

Blog Critics – Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc

Blogomatic 3000 – Sweet Tooth Vol. 2 – In Captivity

Comics Alliance – Wildcats 3.0

Review – Days Missing: Kestus #4

Bookmark and Share

Days Missing-Kestus 004 CoverIt took three issues for me to get into the series and the fourth continues in this positive direction by again giving me something I can relate to.  Days Missing: Kestus #4 almost makes it to present day, stopping on the eve of the new millennium as Y2K looms and anxiety was so high.  A fictional take of the disaster and what if is presented before us with a great twist.

Archaia and Roddenberry Productions continue the history-making series DAYS MISSING! January 1st, 2000—the dawn of a new century came and went without incident. Or did it? On a day of fear and uncertainty, excitement and anticipation, with billions of dollars spent in preparation and humanity’s way of life hanging in the balance, The Steward encounters a true-life super villain bent on bringing the horror of Y2K to the world. Since the dawn of mankind, the enigmatic Steward has guided our destiny in solitude. But now he’s not alone—the immortal woman known as Kestus leads a secret society capable of predicting The Steward’s comings and goings. How will they affect the impending Y2K disaster? DAYS MISSING: KESTUS #4 adds another chapter to the thrilling exploits of The Steward, a being whose ability to “fold” days of time has resulted in critical human events being absent from our historical record. Although their existence is not remembered…the occurrences of these days have forever changed the course of Earth’s evolution!

The series is about mankind and our penchant for good and bad.  It questions the existence of destiny, fate and God.  Exactly what you’d expect from something with the Rodenberry name on it.  It has many of the same themes you’ve seen in their series like Star Trek.

The series has one more issue to go and I have no idea what to expect.  We’ll see what the final issue has in store, but so far it’s got me interested and looking forward to what’s next.

Review – Lucid #4

Bookmark and Share

Lucid 004 CoverAnd that’s a wrap for this first story arc of the series.  Lucid #4 is a satisfying ending to the series, it has some faults, but generally it’s a solid ending and overall entertaining series.  Writer Michael McMillian has pulled it off quite well in this strange mix of magic and the real world.

The first LUCID miniseries comes to a shocking climax as Agent Matthew Dee and Wren confront the New Pendragon! Can they stop his terrible kingdom from rising before it is too late? What insane new weapon threatens mage-kind? What does fate hold in store for President Monday? What horrible secret lurks in the bowels of Tintagel Castle? And just what is up with Matthew’s girlfriend? Don’t miss the spectacular conclusion!

The story was cool and there was definitely some cool stuff like the attempted assassination.  The end has some twists to it (and a few seemed jammed in), and my only complaint was I got some characters mixed up and one’s recovery just happens with no explanation or mention.  But, overall entertaining and fun.

I liked the series as a whole.  The idea of the government having this agency of magic was cool, and overall I’d like the series turn more into a magic FBI or Secret Service.  I think there’s lots of material to mine there and could make for a great follow up.  But, for a first spin out, the work is solid fun.

Smithsonian Celebrates Women Scientists With Comic Books

Bookmark and Share

Smithsonian_Comic_BooksIn March the Smithsonian is putting some of the greatest female scientists under the microscope whose “passion the save the planet as made them today’s superheroes.”  In the special Women in Science website the Smithsonian has also created comic books to introduce people as to why these women are so special.

Scientists highlighted include Elisabeth Blackburn, JoGayle Howard, Nan Hauser, Elisabeth Kalko, Gudrun Pfleuger.  You have the option to download the comics or read them right in your browser.

The Smithsonian is also running ads for the site on websites such as Facebook.  There hasn’t been a day I haven’t seen the ad at least once.  Overall, a great use of comic books and a website.
