It was a light, but good week with a lot of books that earned some top grades.   There’s a lot worth your hard earned dollars, find out which below.

Monthly Comics

Annihilators #2 – Two stories in one solid issue.  The Annihilators need to figure out what’s going on and prevent the Dire Wraiths from gaining strength while Rocket Raccoon is out to free Groot and figure out who’s trying to kill him.  Both stories are full of action and are just beyond fantastic.  As usual, the cosmic end of the Marvel universe doesn’t dissapoint.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #5 – It seems like forever since the fourth issue was released and the one-shot last month didn’t quite live up to the quality I look for.  But this fifth issue is solid.  What happens with a Scarlet Witch who can’t remember who she is, and what happens when she does?  This series potentially has huge impact for the Marvel universe and it’s anyone’s guess what that impact will be.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.75 Overall: 8.75

Brightest Day #23 – So what the hell happens to this series after it wraps?  Will we see characters back in their traditional way or are they now the 4 Elements.  We also find out who Earth’s protector is after months of speculation and guessing.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Bring the Thunder #4 – I can’t remember reading the third issue of this series, which makes going into reading this fourth issue a bit odd.  The story is a big fight sequence and it’s all set up for the series.  Entertaining, and different, but not quite as exciting as that first issue.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.5

Chew #18 – I really wonder the amount of drugs that had to be ingested to write this issue.  It’s all over the place, random, hilarious and got me laughing out loud, a lot.  This series continues its excellence and showing why it should be on everyone’s pull list.

Story: 9 Art: 9 Overall: 9

Fear Itself #1 – The prelude to this series didn’t blow me away in any way, but I have to say, this first issue is solid.  But, that’s been the first issue for most of Marvel’s recent events.  They’ve been solid and then let us down.  There’s a lot here and it sets the tone perfectly, so for that it gets solid marks.  There’s also a mystery here that’s delved into a bit that definitely has me wanting more.  It’s a great first start, now here’s hoping the rest can hold up in quality.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Fear Itself: Homefront #1 – Four short stories that show off why Marvel is my favorite company.  Their stories are rooted in the real world that make them all the more relatable and there’s an emotional depth to them that’s often missing.  Much like the main series, this is a solid first issue that gives you a great feel of what to expect.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.25

Hellraiser #1 – I’ve seen only bits and pieces of the movies, so long ago and don’t really know the background at all, and for that I feel like I’m missing a bit in this first issue.  The gore that I remember is there, but also a sadness to Pinhead I don’t.  The series has me intrigued, if not totally sold.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Heroes for Hire #5 – And that’s the end of the first story arc.  The action was a bit “B” movie and the art seems to have taken a dip, but overall the series is really entertaining and fun, just like a comic book should be.

Story: 7.25 Art: 7 Overall: 7.25

Irredeemable #24 – Tony has found a friend to help with get out of prison, while two unlikely individuals work together to find Tony.  There’s some interesting plot developments here and I have no idea what Mark Waid has in store as this series moves along.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.25 Overall: 7.5

Nonplayer #1 – People are raving about this first issue and I can see why folks enjoy it, but can’t say I’m completely blown away.  Nate Simpson’s series is impressive and original with an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy as well as a creative look at very real technology, enhanced reality.  So far, worth checking out, but I’m not sold for the long haul.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

Raise the Dead 2 #4 – This zombie series is a bit more interesting as the focus has moved to two surviving children and the messed up things the military would do to rebuild a country.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.5

Secret Six #32 – The team continues the battle in Hell and just like the Marvel books that are exploring this, it just isn’t working.  There’s a bit of magic that seems to have gone missing.

Story: 6.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

Ultimate Captain America #4 – What started off as a simple talk about American politics has evolved in a great question of good and evil and who is on the side of the righteous.  What seems like a simple ending of an issue that involves mostly a fight, a simple question is asked and one that really gets you to think.  This is up there for limited series of the year.

Story: 10 Art: 10 Overall: 10

Uncanny X-Men #534.1 – This “point one” book gives you a good taste as to what the X-Men are about, but it also delves deeper as the more successful one of these books have done.  It’s focus is on Magneto and the disdain and distrust of him.  There’s a lot of philosophy thrown about with discussion of P.R. versus propaganda as well as Machiavelli.  Overall, I wish the series had more of these discussions.

Government Printing Office Prints Comic Books

Bookmark and Share

The Government Printing Office (GPO) has a comic book called Squeaks which is supposed to teach about the history of printing.  It sounds so exciting, I can’t wait to read it.  Government sponsored comic books is nothing new, but this business model might be.  It’s reported that each of these comics costs $5.90 to print, a ludicrous amount in today’s environment.  The kicker is each book sells on the GPO website for $5, that’s a 90 cents loss per book.  Um, could this be dumped in the upcoming budget?  Might do some good, and makes me worried what else the government could be losing money on.

The comic book is the first GPO released comic book.  The comic is written by Jim Cameron and illustrated by Nick Crawford.  The book was produced in honor of the 150th anniversary of the GPO and explains the importance and history of printing.

IDW Honored with 12 Eisner Nominations

Official Press Release

IDW Honored with 12 Eisner Nominations

Nominations include Best Continuing Series and Best Archival Collection

LOCKE & KEY: KEYS TO THE KINGDOM coverSan Diego, CA (April 7, 2011)—With today’s announcement of the 2011 nominations for the Will Eisner Comic Industry awards, IDW Publishing and its team of stellar creators and editors have been honored with twelve separate nominations, the most in company history. Showcasing the company’s wide range of projects, six separate books and series received nominations.

“These many nominations covering the breadth of IDW’s diverse product line are so gratifying to see,” said Ted Adams, IDW co-founder and chief executive officer. “We strive hard every month to produce books that run the gamut of comic book fans’ interest, and it’s nice to see a spotlight shined on so many of these books.”

Recently the basis for a FOX Television pilot, IDW’s acclaimed series LOCKE & KEY tops the company’s nominations with four separate nods. Created by best-selling prose author Joe Hill, with art by Gabriel Rodriguez, LOCKE & KEY is up for Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue (Locke & Key: Keys to the Kingdom #1), Best Writer (Joe Hill) and Best Penciller/Inker (Gabriel Rodriguez). Hill is also a member of the creative team for THE CAPE, nominated for Best Single Issue, along with Jason Ciaramella and Zack Howard.THE CAPE cover

“I’m really gratified by all the nominations and especially the nods for LOCKE & KEY and THE CAPE,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s chief creative officer and the editor of both nominated comics. “Anything that brings more focus to these two great series makes me happy. We really believe in LOCKE & KEY, which is why it’s the focus of our Free Comic Day issue this year, and we’re very high on its chances to get picked up as a TV series. And THE CAPE has gone from a little sold-out one-shot to an all-new series this June, so I love the idea of these nominations bringing more attention to the great work the creators are doing on both of these comics.”

THE OUTFIT coverTHE OUTFIT, the second installment of Darywn Cooke’s graphic novel adaptation series, Richard Stark’s Parker, is nominated for Best Writer/Artist (Darywn Cooke) and Best Lettering (Darywn Cooke). The first book in the series, THE HUNTER, won the Eisner for Best Adaptation from Another Work in 2010.

“I’m very happy that Darwyn has once again been recognized by the Eisner voting committee,” said editor Scott Dunbier. “He’s a terrific writer and artist and never gives less than his all—congrats, my friend!”

After launching to huge praise at San Diego Comic Con in 2010, IDW’s inaugural Artist’s Edition book, DAVE STEVENS’ THE ROCKETEER, is recognized with two Eisner nominations, for Best Archival Collection/Project – Strips and Best Publication Design. This amazing edition is edited by Scott Dunbier and designed by Randall Dalhk.DAVE STEVENS' THE ROCKETEER: ARTIST'S EDITION cover

POLLY AND HER PALS COMPLETE SUNDAY COMICS, Volume 1 is edited by multiple award-winner Dean Mullaney and designed by Mullaney and Lorraine Turner.

Rounding out IDW’s twelve nominations is ARCHIE: THE COMPLETE DAILY NEWSPAPER STRIPS, 1946-1948. Recognized in the category of Best Archival Collection/Project – Strips, ARCHIE features the classic work of Bob Montana and the first editor credit for the company’s chief operating officer, Greg Goldstein.

POLLY AND HER PALS, VOL 1“I’m glad our efforts at the Library of American Comics continue to be recognized,” said creative director Mullaney. “These are our ninth nominations in our first four years. I’m particularly proud that tribute this year is being paid to the incredible cartooning of Cliff Sterrett and Bob Montana.”

Archie Celebration Book Debuts at MoCCA Fest

Archie Celebration Book Debuts at MoCCA Fest

First look at deluxe hardcover commemorating
70 years of America’s favorite teenagers

[Archie: A Celebration of America's Favorite Teenagers cover]San Diego, CA (April 6, 2011)—IDW Publishing and its imprint, YOE Books, are proud to announce the debut of the deluxe full-color hardcover coffee table history book, ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE TEENAGERS, edited and designed by Eisner award-winner Craig Yoe, at New York City’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art annual festival this weekend. MoCCA Fest attendees will get a first look at this impressive and lovingly crafted tome, which will be available nation wide by April 30th. ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERIC’A FAVORITE TEENAGERS features more than 200 pages of fascinating history, exciting biographies and rare or unpublished art, all offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most iconic comics of all time.

“We’re excited and honored to have our history presented so expertly by Craig and our friends at IDW,” said Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “This is the kind of book that fans everywhere will cherish for some time. It’s an essential volume for longtime and new fans of Archie and the Riverdale gang.”

Archie and his pals are some of the most beloved and enduring characters in the comics medium, and have a long history stretching back to their origins in 1941. Yoe‘s exhaustive research turned up a plethora of rare and unpublished art by Bob Montana, Dan DeCarlo, and Harry Lucey, vintage photographs, unknown ephemera, and a previously unpublished autobiography of John Goldwater, co-founder of MLJ/Archie Comics. All this rich material serves as the basis for the book, which celebrates both the characters and the immensely talented artists behind them. ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE TEENAGERS also shines a spotlight on writers Frank Doyle, George Gladir, and Craig Boldman, and contemporary Archie artists Fernando Ruiz and Dan Parent, creator of the new kid in Riverdale, Kevin Keller. The beautiful 224-page, large-format volume sports a lengthy and revealing interview with Editor-in-Chief Victor Gorelick, who has worked at Archie over a half a century!

Yoe exclaims, “Working on this book was a real thrill, to find so much unpublished art by masters like DeCarlo, and Lucey, a photo of Elvis on his first tour reading a Betty and Veronica comic, John Goldwater’s unpublished autobiography, Bob Montana’s profusely illustrated high school diary, and be able to share all this with the world had my head spinning at every turn. I felt like a teenager again!”

IDW Publishing and Yoe are excited to debut ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE TEENAGERS at the MoCCA Fest, held only a few short blocks from where the Archie comics were conceived. Continuing the connection between the book and the museum, ARCHIE features a full reprint of a story where the Archie Gang visits the MoCCA museum and meets Chairman Ellen Abramowitz.

Expected to be an immediate sellout after the official launch later this month, only a small number of the sought-after ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE TEENAGERS will be available to MoCCA attendees. Also debuting at MoCCA Fest from IDW and YOE Books will be the sea-and-see worthy POPEYE: THE GREAT COMIC BOOK TALES BY BUD SAGENDORF.

MoCCA Fest will take place this weekend, April 9th and 10th at the Lexington Avenue Armory, at 68 Lexington Avenue in New York City. For more details, visit www.moccany.org.

ARCHIE: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE TEENAGERS ($49.99, 224 pages, hard cover, full color) will be available in comic and books stores on April 20, 2011. ISBN 978-160010-7542.
