Baltimore Comic-Con Welcomes Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire!

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – June 30, 2011 – The Baltimore Comic-Con is pleased to announce the addition of Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire to the line-up of creators attending this year’s show, taking place the weekend of August 20-21, 2011.
Keith Giffen, who will be making his only convention appearance this year at the Baltimore Comic-Con, is a writer/artist who has worked on such title as Legion of  Super-Heroes, Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and his creator-owned series, Hero Squared. Most recently, Giffen was named artist on the DC title O.M.A.C., launching in September.
Writer J.M. DeMatteis began his career in the late-’70s working on DC Comics’ horror line of books. In 1980, he moved over to Marvel, where he worked on The Defenders and Captain America. Over the next 30 years, DeMatteis would write nearly every major character in both the DC and Marvel Universes, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Daredevil and Doctor Strange. In 2010, he teamed up with long-time collaborator, Keith Giffen on DC’s Booster Gold series.

Artist Kevin Maguire, who has worked with both Giffen and DeMatteis on several books, began his a career in 1987. He has worked on such high-profile titles as Batman Confidential, Captain America and X-Men. Most recently, he worked on the latest relaunch of Doom Patrol at DC Comics.

Giffen, DeMatteis and Maguire are well-known for their run on DC Comics’ Justice League in the late ’80s, which added a humorous brand of storytelling to the superhero team dynamic. Their appearance at the Baltimore Comic-Con marks only the second time they have all been together at a show. In addition, all three creators will be appearing on a panel together at the show.

“The three of us have only been together at a convention once before – and that ended in screaming, physical violence, and millions of dollars in property damage,” said DeMatteis. “I look forward to doing it again!”

“With the recent release of the latest Justice League International trade from DC, we couldn’t be happier to have the creative team behind that book at this year’s show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “That series’ lighthearted tone and fantastic humor added something different to a comic landscape that was filled with ‘grim and gritty’ books and should be on everyone’s essential reading lists.”

Also, don’t forget that Stan Lee VIP Packages and show admission tickets are now available and can be purchased online by visiting baltimorecomiccon.com/tickets/!

Confirmed guests for this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con include: Guest of Honor, Stan “The Man” Lee; Jason Aaron (Scalped, PunisherMAX); Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead); Nick Cardy (Aquaman, Teen Titans); Greg Capullo (Spawn, Batman); Cliff Chiang (Greendale); Frank Cho (50 Girl 50, X-Men: Schism, New Ultimates); Todd Dezago (Super Hero Squad, The Perhapanauts); David Finch (Brightest Day, Batman: The Dark Knight); Ron Frenz (Spider-Girl); Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez (Wednesday Comics, Batman Confidential); Michael Golden (creator of Bucky O’Hare); Mike Grell (Action Comics, The Pilgrim); Brad Guigar (Evil, Inc., Courting Disaster); Steve Hamaker (Bone); Cully Hamner (Red, Red: Eyes Only); Dean Haspiel (The Alcoholic, Act-i-Vate); Jamal Igle (Supergirl, Zatanna); J.G. So, taking a great idea from my friend’s website, Hot Guys Reading Books, I’ve decided I’m going to just start snapping photos of folks reading comic books out in public.  It’s an interesting thing I see go in waves here in DC.  During The Walking Dead’s airing every metro ride there’d be one person reading a trade.

So, for the first entry comes one of the bar tenders reading the latest The Walking Dead trade at local Washington, DC watering hole The Big Hunt.  In between waiting on the customers at the upper bar, he’d go right back to reading through Robert Kirkman‘s brilliance.

The photo isn’t great (thanks cell).  If you have a photo you’d like to submit, send them our way with the location and the comic being read if possible.

Boom! Studios Gets Personal With the Latest Email Ask

Bookmark and Share

Email is one area that the entire comic book industry is lagging behind, so I paused and read the below message sent today by Boom! Studios‘ Chip “Cuddles” Mosher  The email comes of personal and is a very good “ask” and this is coming from someone who writes emails professionally for organizations and campaigns.  You can read the full email below, but kudos for changing it up from the normal newsletter.

The email began with the awesome subject, “BOOM! Studios needs a favor from you.”

To all our BOOM! Studios/KABOOM! Newsletter Subscribers,

As I am sure you have read, sales for comics are down this year from last. So I wanted to ask you all to do me a favor… and that is to make sure you are pre-ordering your books from your local comic shop or online retailer. If you don’t have a subscription or pull list, and you are a comics fan, please take the time to work with your local comic shop to get one. By pre-ordering your comics with your local retailer you make it easier for them to know what to order for their store and run their business better. This isn’t just true for BOOM! Studios comics and trades, but for every publisher and every store. It’s just a very helpful thing to do!

Selfishly, I want to let you know about a comic book from us that you should definitely be pre-ordering! Roger Langridge’s SNARKED (Diamond Code of JUN110963) debuts this August with a #0 issue for only $1.  You might have fallen in love with Roger’s cartooning on his Harvey Award-winning THE MUPPET SHOW COMIC BOOK series that we published over the past two years or his writing on THOR:THE MIGHTY AVENGER, which was a fan-favorite this past year from our friends at Marvel. Below, I’m going to give you a chance to see some preview pages and read some of the advanced reviews that we have gotten on this title, if you haven’t seen them already. I could tell you more about the book, but I’d rather you just experience the pure joy of Roger’s work below. The advance buzz on this book is great and I don’t want you to miss out.

So when you go to your local comic shop today, or later in the week, make sure you have a subscription or pull list at the store. And if you are so inclined, put SNARKED #0 (Diamond Code of JUN110963) on that new list or the list you currently have. It’s only a buck, so you won’t regret it. (SNARKED #1 will be coming out this October.) Making sure you have a subscription or pull list at your local comic shop is just the right thing to do these days – whether you put SNARKED on it or not. But I am the Marketing and Sales Director here at BOOM!, so you’ll have to forgive me for trying to sell you on SNARKED! :P

Here are the pages and advanced reviews I’ve promised:
