Review: Catalyst Prime: Superb #7

Catalyst Prime: Superb #7 Cover

Where we last left our heroes, Amina and Cosmosis have rescued Corinna from Foresight all the while trying to rescue their parents and learn the secrets of Foresight but is all what it seems?

Superb comes from the recent superhero universe Catalyst Prime from Lion Forge Comics and seems to be slowly but surely developing a following. And that has piqued my interest in checking out the buzz. I decided to start with Superb since I thought that sounded like an appealing book. I’ve found recent superhero books with teenagers to be rather fun whether it’d be Ms. Marvel or Unstoppable Wasp as examples. And Superb, at least Catalyst Prime as a whole, seems to appeal to me as much as Marvel does since I do care about the characters and relate to their actions. It’s a simple superhero story right with a mysterious organization added to boot. Kayla Tate/Amina and Jonah Watkins/Cosmosis are very likeable leads. And hey, cool that Watkins is a superhero with Down syndrome.

You also have to remember, they are kids. Some actions they’ve committed simply seemed like a good idea at the time to them but they learn. And that’s very relatable to me.

Writers Sheena C. Howard and David F. Walker (Luke Cage) certainly nail the characters hard. Not one moment feels off, every action and every bit of dialogue feels natural coming from everyone and I like the structure of the whole mystery surrounding Foresight. Especially the introduction of what looks like some kind of injector device, I don’t know, it kind of looked like an oversized needle to me but while it’s still setup, it’s good setup that could come into play later.

And concerning a certain character, I admit I didn’t see coming so kudos to Howard and Walker for that especially given the cliffhanger sets up a new fight.

The art itself by Alitha Martinez is decent enough, nothing to write home about but I quite like the art anyway and fits the book itself. Then again, the book does look like it could fit in with the Marvel universe so maybe that’s part of why I like Superb thus far.

If you’re already a fan of this book or Catalyst Prime itself, the book’s energy and intrigue with its likeable leads is still going strong. If you want a superhero book that isn’t Marvel or DC, this is the book for you, check it out.

Review: Catalyst Prime: Superb #3

Cosmosis has barely managed to escape alive from the Foresight Corporation compound where super-powered teenagers are being held captive. His best friend, Kayla Tate, will reveal secrets of her own to keep him alive. Can Kayla and Cosmosis stay one step ahead of Foresight, and how will the secret engineer named Abby help the two newest heroes of Youngstown, Ohio?

Things are pretty tense with Catalyst Prime: Superb #3 as the search for Cosmosis is on and the Foresight Corporation continues to try to figure out how they haven’t detected him up to this point.

Writers David Walker and Sheena C. Howard give us a fascinating story that really gets things going as Kayla and Jonah introduce us to a new character Abby who’s a bit of a tinkerer and been helping Jonah. It creates a triangle of friendship and a bunch of tension that you’d find with teenagers. And that’s what Walker and Howard pull off really well, this feels like kids going up against an evil corporation. They don’t try to use lingo or references to tell us these are kids, instead their actions and behaviors deliver that all on their own.

The art by Alitha Martinez and Ray-Anthony Height is really good bouncing around the various locations and giving us a world that feels lived in. There’s lots of small details thrown about that creates homes and offices, it just feels real in a way. The character designs, especially during some of the more “emotional” moments stick out and definitely enhance what Walker and Howard have written. The colors too, by Veronica Gandini and Sotocolor, jump off the page giving it all a slight youthful energy about it. The coloring also helps create the diverse world giving us shades of characters.

The third issue feels like the point where things really get going adding another piece of the puzzle and getting me even more excited for the Catalyst Prime universe.

Story: David Walker, Sheena C. Howard Art: Alitha Martinez, Ray-Anthony Height
Story: 8.0 Art: 8.0 Overall: 8.0 Recommendation: Buy

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick(s): Bloodshot Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4 (Valiant Entertainment) –  There’s a funny thing this week. There’s really only two comics I can’t wait to pick up from my LCS, and both are from Valiant: Bloodshot: Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4. While I’ve read both, I want to reread them both in print without the review copy watermark on them.

Mr. Crypt #1 (Alterna) – It’s a living skeleton and the comic is about $1.50. What’s not to love?

Paul

Top Pick: Jean Grey #7 (Marvel) – I’ve really been enjoying this series and seeing Jean meeting up with other heroes and learning from them has been fun. But to be totally honest, I’m really just looking forward to seeing Scarlet Witch in this issue. Not too much of a fan boy, eh?

Super Sons #8 (DC Comics) – This is a fun, action filled super hero book that you all should be reading.

U.S.Avengers #10 (Marvel) – I’m interested to see how the fall of Hydra will effect this team, and looking forward to them going out to look for Cannonball. This book is hit or miss with me, and the Secret Empire tie ins were just alright, so I’m hoping things pick up.

X-Men Gold #12 (Marvel) – This book has been a good read, even though I do have a few issues on how some characters have been depicted or altogether pushed to the side (looking at Storm). I would like to see this book be more of a team feel like the first few issues were; lately is just feels like ‘the tales of Shadowcat and Colossus’ with the rest of the team just popping up as support.

Shay

Batwoman #7 (DC Comics) – Kate and her dad spend some time stranded in the first installment of the Fear and Loathing story arc.

Harley Quinn #28 (DC Comics) – Harley’s running for office. An anti-heroine for the people!

Harley Quinn Batman Day Special (DC Comics) – I’m all for anything Harley related especially when we get to see her toxic relationship fable with Joker. Here’s to hoping that she stays smart and stays single .

Luke Cage #5 ( Marvel) – It’s going down in New Orleans and I’ve got popcorn.

Brett

Top Pick: Batman: The Red Death #1 (DC Comics) – I’m all in with DC’s latest even Metal and this one gives us the scoop on one of the alternate worlds’ Batman. I’ve read it and holy crap is it good.

Catalyst Prime: Superb #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – I’ve been sucked into the Catalyst Prime world and this series is standing out in a teenage superhero sort of way that has enough different to make it a must read.

Dark Ark #1 (AfterShock) – You know the story of Noah… but what about that other ark?

Misbegotten: Runaway Nun #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Haven’t read this yet but it feels like the grindhouse sort of concept and movie that I really enjoy.

World of Animosity #1 (AfterShock) – This amazing comic world expands with this new series and is absolutely a world you should be checking out if you haven’t already.

Joe

Top Pick: Dark Nights: Metal #1 (DC Comics) – Snyder and Cappulo back on a Batman book that will have huge repercussions and changed for the DC universe. Hell yes!

Southern Bastards #17 (Image) – This book doesn’t come out often enough, and I’m only complaining because it’s so damn good.

Aquaman #27 (DC Comics) – This has been such a good arc with incredible art and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #8 (Marvel) – This has been such a pleasant surprise to me and a lot of fun. Duggan knows how to tie the ridiculousness with action so well on Deadpool, and he brings that to this series.

Astonishing X-Men #2 (Marvel) – A really solid first issue that hit the nostalgia home run much more than Gold did for me. The ending teased something huge but I’m sure that was just a trick by a certain character.

Brett

Top Pick: American Way: Those Above and Below #2 (Vertigo) – Jon Ridley alone is enough to get me looking forward to this series but the first issue knocked it out of the park having me excited to read the second.

Catalyst Prime Superb #2 (Lion Forge Comics) – The first issue was solid and delivers on Catalyst Prime’s promises. I want to see where this second one goes to see if it can continue the positive direction of the entire line.

Future Quest Presents #1 (DC Comics) – A new anthology-ish series that continues the adventures of some of my favorite childhood characters.

Motor Girl #8 (Abstract Studios) – Easily the best comic on the market. It mixes humor and feels in a way no other comic is doing. Just utter perfection and the one I look forward to each and every month.

Sh*t My Presidents Says: Illustrated Tweets of Donald Trump (IDW Publishing) – Shannon Wheeler’s cartoons that bring President Trump’s tweets to life are collected in this book. It’s both funny and… sad.
