Captain America: Cold War Alpha feels like being dropped in the middle of a story

Captain America: Cold War Alpha

I’ll admit, I haven’t been keeping up with the two Captain America series currently being released. While I enjoyed the first few issues of each, I fell off regularly reading them, as there’s so much coming out and only so much time. But, I tried to keep up with a general idea of what’s going on. And, as expected, the two series have come together for a crossover event, “Cold War” which kicks off here with Captain America: Cold War Alpha.

Written by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Tochi Onyebuchi, the comic and event brings together plot lines from each series. Bucky Barnes is now the Outer Circle’s New Revolution. He’s now teamed up with the White Wolf who he has freed from prison. Steve Rogers’ adopted son, Ian, A.K.A. Nomad, is abducted which has him bringing together his friends and allies Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter, and Misty Knight to help figure out what’s going on. Steve thinks Bucky is still on his side but playing a game they can’t figure out, but what’s shown throws so much into question.

If you haven’t been reading things up to this point, you might be lost starting with Captain America: Cold War Alpha. The issue does what it can to catch readers up but there’s a lot to pack into one issue. The very basics are laid out and you can limp your way through the issue but it’s a tough read and it feels like you’ve come into a film a missed the first half hour. Still, there’s some solid action and the comic captures a good action vibe.

That’s helped by the art by Carlos Magno. With color by Guru-eFX and lettering by Joe Caramagna, the comic has a big screen picture vibe about it. The scenes are over the top, settings feel grand, and the action is on a pretty big scale. None of this comic feels small or intimate, this is a big swing for entertainment.

Captain America: Cold War Alpha has its moments and feels like a summer popcorn action film, but, it also feels like a story that you really need to know what has been going on before. The issue does what it can to catch readers up but it doesn’t quite nail that down and might leave readers even more confused. If Dimension Z or Ian are completely foreign to you, this is a kick off that might fall a bit flat.

TRAVELING TO MARS #5

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

007: For King or Country #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – We loved the last miniseries and we’re expecting more fun with this one. Bond fans won’t want to miss out on this.

All the Devils Are Here #1 (Scout Comics) – It says it reinvents the exorcism story, and we’re interested in seeing how it does and if it pulls it off.

Ambassadors #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was an interesting mix of Willy Wonka and superheroes and how it ties in Millarworld’s bigger picture has us intrigued.

Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1 (Marvel) – An event is coming and this kicks things off!

Dark Ride #5 (Image Comics) – We’re loving this horror series and excited to see where the next arc goes. Who’s corrupted? What are these demons? We want to know more!

Giant Kokju #1 (Image Comics) – A twist(ed) take on the giant monster genre.

The Gimmick #2 (AHOY Comics) – This superpowers meets wrestling series had a very interesting debut and we want to see where it goes from there.

Great British Bump off #1 (Dark Horse) – Described as an Agatha Christie-styled murder mystery set in a competitive baking competition, that has us completely sold on this.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (Marvel) – The first issue is entertaining and has us wanting to find out what more happened. Read our early review.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 6 (VIZ Media) – The series has been great so far changing up the kaiju concept and then it did it again after well into the series. We want to see what happens next! Great action. Great images. Lots of fun.

Maniac of New York: Don’t Call it a Comeback #2 (AfterShock) – You thought Harry was killed? Guess what, that’s not the case. We’re loving this horror franchise.

Missing You (IDW Publishing) – Siblings who recently lost their mother bring an injured deer home to rescue it. We’re already holding back tears.

Phantom Road #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was really interesting with a pair of individuals transported to a strange world. We’re not quite sure what’s going on and want to find out more.

Red Zone #2 (AWA Studios) – The series about an American Professor of Russian of Slavic studies being called in by the US government for a secret mission to Russia is interesting considering the state of the world.

Seasons Have Teeth #1 (BOOM! Studios) – In a drab, colorless world, the seasons bring change… and also destruction. The seasons arrive to a retired conflict photographer as personified, god-like creatures. Sounds original!

Space Job #3 (Dark Horse) – Each issue has had us cracking up in this workplace comedy meets Star Trek.

Star Wars: Ewoks #1 (Marvel) – Ewoks. Nuff said.

TMNT/Usagi Yojimbo: Wherewhen #1 (IDW Publishing) – It’s TMNT meets Usagi Yojimbo. We don’t need any more reason to be excited for this.

Traveling to Mars #5 (Ablaze) – The series has been an amazing mix of satire, comedy, and drama, all with a ton of heart. One of our favorites this year.

WildC.A.T.s #6 (DC Comics) – The series has delivered great action, solid moments with the characters and finally cracked the code in bringing the Wildstorm world into the DCU!

THE REVOLUTION STARTS HERE: COLD WAR – PART ONE!
Bucky Barnes is the Outer Circle’s New Revolution, and he has enacted his deadliest move yet – an alliance with Sam Wilson’s nemesis, the White Wolf. When Steve Rogers’ adopted son, Ian, A.K.A. Nomad, is abducted by someone Steve thought was a friend, he suspects Bucky’s hand at work and calls upon the people who know Ian best – Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter and Misty Knight – to help him get to the bottom of the attack. Has Bucky finally gone too far? Why has Nomad been taken, and what does it have to do with a portal to Dimension Z opening over a secret battleground in Alaska? The Symbol of Truth and the Sentinel of Liberty reunite for a pulse-pounding crossover event that will make them question everything they believe in-and each other.

Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1

Friendships shattered. Feuds erupt. It’s the Captain America: Cold War final battle!

In the pages of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Captain America: Symbol of Truth, Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have embarked on separate thrilling journeys as Captain America, tackling new enemies and uncovering twisted conspiracies throughout the Marvel Universe. On April 12, their adventures will collide in an epic new crossover: Captain America: Cold War!

In explosive fashion, the saga will pay off story threads that have driven both Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero’s Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Tochi Onyebuchi and R.B. Silva’s Captain America: Symbol of Truth including the surprising return of Ian Rogers, AKA Nomad; Sam Wilson’s intense conflict with Wakanda and White Wolf; and Bucky’s bold new mission as the New Revolution. When Bucky and White Wolf join forces and kidnap Ian Rogers in a twisted plan to unleash Dimension Z, will Steve and Sam see eye to eye on how to set things right? This globetrotting, espionage-fueled thriller with shocking twists and turns promises to be a milestone chapter in Captain America’s 80-year legacy that will impact both Steve and Sam’s future as shield-bearers. It all begins on April 12 in Captain America: Cold War Alpha, but right now, fans can peek ahead at what’s in store during the six-part crossover’s final chapters in June.

In Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #13, guest artist Alina Erofeeva joins Kelly and Lanzing for the penultimate chapter of “Cold War”! Just when White Wolf thinks he’s gained the upper hand, Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers rally under the banner of Captain America. Meanwhile, Black Widow and Peggy Carter clash over what it means to be a hero – and whether Bucky Barnes is still someone worth saving.

In Captain AMerica: Cold War Omega #1, all three Captain America scribes team up with superstar artist Carlos Magno for the pulse-pounding “Cold War” finale! White Wolf has unleashed an army of Dimension Z monsters upon our world as a declaration of global war, and Team Cap’s only hope to stop it is to take him down for good. Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes deploys his final chess piece – Ian Rogers himself – to turn the situation in his favor. Lifelong friends battle alongside mortal enemies – and change the trajectory of their lives – in this stunning conclusion!

Then, join Onyebuchi and guest artist Zé Carlos for a special “Cold War” aftermath issue in Captain America: Symbol of Truth #14. Fresh from the battle with Bucky Barnes and White Wolf, Sam Wilson returns home to Harlem with battle scars and a renewed sense of focus. With Misty Knight by his side, he sets out to forge a new path – and maybe reunite with some old friends along the way.

Sharon Carter gets a killer new look in the aftermath of Captain America: Cold War

Marvel has released a first look at artist Carmen Carnero’s new design for Sharon Carter that will be unleashed in the pages of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carnero’s Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty run. This mysterious transformation of Steve Roger’s partner will spin out of the character’s upcoming arc in the Captain America: Cold War crossover that kicks off next month.

In Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #10, Sharon witnessed the apparent demise of Roger Aubrey, A.K.A. the Destroyer. The profound impact this event has on her is the latest step in the bold journey the creative team has in store for one of Marvel’s most iconic espionage agents.

Carnero’s design sheet will also serve as a variant cover for a future issue of Captain America. Check it out now and stay tuned for more news about Captain America: Cold War

Captain America vs. Captain America. Sam and Steve battle for the right to lead in Captain America: Cold War

Captain America: Cold War, the explosive crossover saga that’s been building since the very beginning of Captain America’s current era is almost upon us!

Both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson presently wield the shield and have embarked on separate journeys as Captain America in the pages of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero’s Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Tochi Onyebuchi and R.B. Silva’s Captain America: Symbol of Truth. This April, both books will collide in an epic that will make them question everything they believe in…and each other. This bold chapter in Captain America’s 80-year legacy will be a globetrotting, espionage-fueled thriller lined with hard-hitting personal conflict between the two Captains America. The storyline will pay off various plot threads that made both titles must-reads the past year including the rise of the mysterious Outer Circle and their shocking connection to Steve Rogers; the surprising return of Ian Rogers, AKA Nomad; Sam Wilson’s intense conflict with Wakanda and White Wolf; and Bucky’s bold new mission as the New Revolution. Things will come to a head when Bucky and White Wolf join forces and kidnap Ian Rogers in a twisted plan to unleash Dimension Z. Will Steve and Sam be able to agree on the hard choices needed to set things right? It all kicks off in April’s Captain America: Cold War Alpha but right now, readers can peek ahead at what’s to come in Parts 3 and 4 of the event, on sale in May!

In Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #12, Kelly and Lanzing will be joined by guest artist Alina Erofeeva as they bring Black Widow into the action! In Captain America: Symbol of Truth #13, White Wolf’s latest trap has left the Captains America barely standing, and Sam Wilson is hesitant to push the team toward certain death without a backup plan. But Steve Rogers will stop at nothing to rescue his son — even if it means taking down one of his closest friends!

Check out the May covers now and be there when Captain America: Cold War officially begins this April!

Tensions erupt between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson as Captain America: Cold War begins!

It’s all been leading to this! Last year, a new era of Captain America began as both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson picked up the shield and embarked on separate journeys in the pages of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero’s Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Tochi Onyebuchi and R.B. Silva’s Captain America: Symbol of Truth. This April, the two Captains will reunite for Captain America: Cold War, an explosive crossover event that will make them question everything they believe in…and each other.

First teased at New York Comic Con, Captain America: Cold War will be a pivotal chapter in the legendary 80-year history of Captain America. An espionage-fueled action thriller, the storyline will pay off various plot threads that have building up in the pages of both acclaimed titles including the rise of the mysterious Outer Circle and their shocking connection to Steve Rogers; the surprising return of Ian Rogers, AKA Nomad; Sam Wilson’s intense conflict with Wakanda and White Wolf; and Bucky’s bold new mission as the New Revolution.

Here’s what fans can expect when Cold War erupts in full force this April:

Don’t miss Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11, a thrilling Cold War prelude issue! Captain America and the new Invaders may be free from M.O.D.O.C.’s mind control, but they are not yet guaranteed their lives. With the battle nearly won, the Outer Circle have arrived on the ground to collect their prize. It’s up to Steve Rogers to wrestle victory from the Power and finally end the Outer Circle’s invasion of Manhattan — but choices made at this critical point will alter Steve’s understanding of friendship and the stakes of his fight against the Outer Circle for good.

Then Kelly, Lanzing, and Onyebuchi team up with artist Carlos Magno to begin the revolution in Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1! Bucky Barnes is the Outer Circle’s New Revolution, and he has enacted his deadliest move yet — an alliance with Sam Wilson’s nemesis, the White Wolf. When Steve Rogers’ adopted son, Ian, A.K.A. Nomad, is abducted by someone Steve thought was a friend, he suspects Bucky’s hand at work and calls upon the people who know Ian best — Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter and Misty Knight — to help him get to the bottom of the attack. Has Bucky finally gone too far? Why has Nomad been taken, and what does it have to do with a portal to Dimension Z opening over a secret battleground in Alaska? Featuring a cover by Patrick Gleason.

In Captain America: Symbol of Truth #12, Part two of Cold War, White Wolf has used the power granted him by Bucky Barnes to take control of Dimension Z and unleash its creatures onto the Captains America. Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers are prepared to fight their way through the onslaught, but the Outer Circle has more stakes in this fight than our heroes realize. Can Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers agree on their priorities before they fall to this new threat? And what exactly does Bucky Barnes intend to do to Ian Rogers?
