Lotus Land #1 teases an intriguing tech driven dystopia

Lotus Land #1

In a Vancouver of the future painted with ultramodern decay, a groundbreaking advancement in technology promises an end to entropy itself. But when an attack on this mysterious “Keeper Program” threatens the lives of everyone tied to it, retired Police Detective Bennie Strikman is called to investigate one last case. Lotus Land #1 delivers an opening chapter that shows off potential while dancing around what makes it interesting.

Written by Darcy Van Poelgeest, Lotus Land #1 is an interesting start to the series. At its core, the comic feels like it’s a typical detective story. A break-in. A murder. A detective who has a troubled personal life. It checks all of the boxes for this type of story. It also has something going for it in its world and the teased “Keeper Program.”

This is a rather typical future, dystopian, flying cars, crappy environment, again the comic checks the boxes. But, there’s some tech involved that may solve society’s problems and decay. What it is? That’s not really explained all that well, it’s the McGuffin at this point, the one detail that feels original but not focused on enough.

There’s Detective Strikman but his personal life seems like something we’ve seen before and his gift too has been used before multiple times in various genres. Where Strikman stands out is that he cares for his son, away from the city. It’s a role we don’t see too often in a character like this and out of everything it feels like something that’s original and really makes the character interesting. Yes, he has a gift he uses to solve crimes but it’s a gift that’s been done before. His demeanor is what we’d expect. So far, beyond that one detail, it’s a pretty standard detective story.

Caio Filipe‘s art is good. With color by Patricio Delpeche and lettering by Nate Piekos, it too doesn’t really break any new ground but overall it has a style that’s interesting and creates a world that’s fun to look at. The designs aren’t anything really new, but the team has delivered a comic that overall has a cool look to it that works well for the genre and characters so far.

Lotus Land #1 is a standard detective story. It’s entertaining enough and we’ll see where it goes and if it’ll stand out. It teases potential and interesting aspects. But, overall, it’s a noir detective story set in a dystopian future, a story we’ve seen many times before.

Dark Horse presents the Stranger Things Library Edition Volume 3

Dark Horse Books presents the next Stranger Things Library Edition Volume 3, collecting Stranger Things: The Tomb of Ybwen by Greg Pak, Diego Galindo, Francesco Segala, and Nate Piekos, and Stranger Things: Holiday Specials by Michael Moreci, Chris Roberson, Keith Champagne, Todor Hristov, ABEL, Caio Filipe, Dan Jackson, and Nate Piekos. This oversized hardcover collection will feature cover art by Stranger Things fan-favorite artist, Kyle Lambert.

Stranger Things: The Tomb of Ybwen is set in January 1985 after the Hawkins crew survived a battle with the Mind Flayer. Will and Joyce are reeling from Bob Newby’s death, but Will’s friends have been too busy with their girlfriends to notice him struggling. After Mr. Clarke and Will discover an odd map Bob left in a box of A.V. club memorabilia, Will rallies the gang to investigate—but with a blizzard coming, they’re afraid to follow. But when Will takes off into the freezing wilds alone, they rush to stop him and just as they catch up, they discover that Bob’s map may lead to a real hidden treasure–and that turning back is no longer an option.

Stranger Things: Holiday Specials includes three separate heartwarming and terrifying stories perfect for any season. In the Winter Special, Eleven gets introduced to everyone’s favorite Christmas stories; in the Halloween Special, Will tells the other boys the scariest Hawkins Halloween story ever; and in the Summer Special, officers Powell and Callahan investigate strange events that they’ll be lucky to survive.

Stranger Things Library Edition Volume 3 will be in bookstores October 24, 2023 and in comic shops October 25, 2023. It is now available to pre-order at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and your local comic shop and indie bookstore.

Take a trip through Hawkins, Indiana in Stranger Things: Tales From Hawkins

Award-winning writer Jody Houser returns to pen an anthology of vibrant new stories woven into the larger tapestry of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things in Stranger Things: Tales From Hawkins! Joining Houser on her trip through Hawkins are artist Caio Filipe, Sunando C, Giorgia Gio Esposito colorist Dan Jackson, and letterer Nate Piekos.

On the surface, Hawkins, Indiana seems like the kind of town where nothing too out of the ordinary ever happens, but in the fall of ’83 it is anything but safe. In Issue #1 of Tales from Hawkins, two friends head out into the woods with their rifles and a six-pack. These would-be hunters find themselves the prey of a nightmarish beast who has claimed the wilderness around town and everything inside it, including them.

Stranger Things: Tales From Hawkins #1 (of four) will be in comic shops February 8, 2023. Artists Kyle Lambert, Diego Galindo, and Danny Luckert each contributed a variant cover for issue #1. All four variants are available for pre-order at your local comic shop.

The Heat is On in the Stranger Things Summer Special

This summer, Dark Horse Comics presents the Stranger Things Summer Special One-Shot! Written by Keith Champagne, illustrated by Caio Filipe, colored by Dan Jackson, and lettered by Nate Piekos, the Stranger Things Summer Special arrives just in time for the summer premiere of Stranger Things 4, and features covers by Diego Galindo and Heather Vaughn! Volume I of Stranger Things 4 premieres on Netflix May 27, 2022 followed by Volume II July 1, 2022.

Officers Powell and Callahan patrol the “mean” streets of Hawkins Indiana with the enthusiasm of two hefty dachshunds pretending to be bloodhounds. Typically, they don’t have to chase down more than the occasional petty theft and teenagers smoking reefer but lately the town has been getting weirder, and while they might not get to the bottom of it, they just might be lucky enough to survive it.

Stranger Things Summer Special One-Shot will be in comic shops July 6, 2022.
