When Marvel’s Current Editor-in-Chief Posed as Japanese to Write Comics

Just when you think the comics industry can’t get any weirder or lower it responds “hold my beer.” Today it was revealed that Marvel‘s new editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski has admitted to writing under the Japanese-sounding pseydonym “Akira Yoshida” during the 00s.

Rumors for years, and lied about numerous times, the revelation was admitted to today. Cebulski first used the “pen name” around 2004 when he was an associate editor at Marvel. At first his writing was done outside of Marvel, but eventually he wound up writing for Marvel as well.

The lie became elaborate and complex with a made-up life story, people saying they met the person, Yoshida attending conventions. Though some say they met Yoshida that in reality was a translator who was visiting Marvel’s office for an unrelated thing (which in itself feels racist on top of everything else messed up about this).

Cebluski has admitted the ruse:

I stopped writing under the pseudonym Akira Yoshida after about a year. It wasn’t transparent, but it taught me a lot about writing, communication and pressure. I was young and naïve and had a lot to learn back then. But this is all old news that has been dealt with, and now as Marvel’s new Editor-in-Chief, I’m turning a new page and am excited to start sharing all my Marvel experiences with up and coming talent around the globe.

So, we have:

  1. A white person posing as Asian to get writing gigs
  2. That person somehow getting paid for this (How did that work!? Isn’t opening accounts supposed to be harder post 9/11?
  3. Weren’t there contracts signed? How is this not fraud?!
  4. Did C.B. hire “Akira” for Marvel? Was it someone else?
  5. That person double dipping at a company.
  6. That person now being Editor-in-Chief at the same company after spending years expanding their reach in China and surrounding areas.
  7. Who knew and helped cover this up?

The rumors cropped up again in July when an audio short story was released by a former Marvel editor then Image Comics brand manager David Brothers made a comment about Sunday night on Twitter.

Just when you think things can’t get worse or weirder in comics, they always find a way to surprise you.

NYCC 2010: Cup O’ Joe Panel

Bookmark and Share

Marvel‘s Cup O’ Joe panel was packed at the 2010 New York Comic Con.  Not only were all of the seats taken up, but there had to be 100 people standing against the walls.  Those attending got a promotional CrossGen button.

On the panel were Joe Quesada, Jeph Loeb, Tom Brevoort, Axel Alonso, Brian Michael Bendis, C.B. Cebulski, Arune Singh and Dan Buckley.

Below are the highlights:

  • The panel started with three teaser images from whatever is coming from CrossGen.  There was something with Sigil and was announced Mark Waid would be involved somehow.
  • Coming from Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Oeming is a new series Takio about two sisters who get super powers.  It’s an all ages graphic novel that will come out around February 2011.
  • I Am Moon Knight” was teased with images of Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine and finally a beautiful image of Moon Knight from Alex Maleev.  Coming in early 2011 the series from Bendis and Maleev will do for Moon Knight what Bendis did for Daredevil.  It will establish him in the Marvel Universe and been working on it for a while.
  • Marvel + ESPN = ? – Marvel is working with ESPN on their magazine and is mixing super hero iconography with the NBA.  A pic up Lebron on the cover of the Unmazing Cavaliers solicited boos, and a pic of Kobe with all of the Green Lantern rings got some laughs.  The magazine will be out October 22.
  • Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark solicited groans from the audience.  I was one of them.  They showed a clip of Marvel staffer Steve Wacker who went to college on a theater scholarship and tried out for the musical.  Expect the clips at Marvel.com.  It looks like this might be the best thing coming from the musical.

The panel went onto questions:

  • The first question was about Marvel’s and their staff’s use of Twitter and they view it as a great way to interact with the fans and get feedback.
  • An irate fan complained about the Sentry and Rogue having a fling and the fan insisted it couldn’t of happened.  The panel wasn’t the happiest with the tone and pushed back a bit stating that mistakes do happen, and we’re unaware of the continuity issues they do catch.  They went on to point on the whole point of an affair is not knowing it’s going on.
  • When referring the the Sentry they used the word disappear instead of dead.
  • Loeb said Cap White is happening and their target date is for it to be out in time for the movie.
  • A teacher who uses comics in the classroom brought up how the Sentry tearing apart Carnage was a metaphor that the 90’s was over and Marvel was moving forward into the future.  With the Sentry now dead and Carnage back, what was that a metaphor for?  The Marvel panel seemed to enjoy that one.  But didn’t really respond.
  • When asked about new series and trying different ideas they said not everything is a hit, and you need to try things because you never know what will take off, The Runaways was an example of an unexpected hit.  There are no hard and fast rules about what gets published.
  • As to the new War Machine series Iron Man 2.0, they said the movie helped make the decision even though a series just ended with the character.  He now has a higher profile, hence the series.
  • There are two artists working on a crossover of the three Avengers teams.
  • There is news coming up concerning the Powers television show within days.  There is a director and show runner in place.
