Marvel Shakes Up its Leadership as Dan Buckley Announces his Departure in 2027

Marvel

Looks like 2026 and 2027 will be the year of leadership changes for major comic publishers. DC Comics will be facing a lot of questions as their parent company Warner Bros. Discovery gets bought Paramount Skydance. Marvel will be getting new leadership as current Marvel president Dan Buckley will depart the company in 2027. Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum will become the Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise and Disney executive David Abdo will be the General Manager, Comics & Franchise. Winderbaum will be focused on the creative direction and global brand while Abdo will report to Winderbaum. C.B. Cebulski, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, will report to Winderbaum, according to the announcement.  Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.

Winderbaum was previously the Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation and served as an executive producer for Marvel Studios’ shows. His career goes back to the first Iron Man film. Abdo was at Disney Music Group as the General Manager. Buckley’s career at Marvel goes back to its bankruptcy in the 90s and its road back.

Brad’s exceptional creative leadership and David’s deep experience in operations and digital innovation will be a powerful pairing as we begin building out the next 90 years of Marvel’s comic book legacy. Brad brings a proven ability to lead creative teams and craft ongoing, episodic narratives that resonate with our fans around the world, while David offers a strong track record of operational excellence and strategic growth. I’m excited for what they’ll be able to do together.

-Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel

From events like Civil War, Secret Wars, X-Men: Age of Krakoa, and the soon to be released Marvel Midnight imprint, to the expansion into video games, television, animation, and more, Marvel’s influence on popular culture expanded under Dan’s leadership, bringing our characters and stories to new fans around the world. Dan has left a lasting mark on Marvel’s legacy and on the comics industry, and I’m deeply grateful to him and pleased we will have his full support through this transition.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns in Captain America #6!

Last week at the Lucca Comics & Games festival, Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky shed light on the next arc of Captain America, one of the industry’s hottest new titles! Kicking off in issue #6 this January, the upcoming storyline will set a new status quo for Steve Rogers and the wider Marvel Universe with a moment that’s been anticipated for years…THE RETURN OF S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Drawn by series artist Valerio Schiti along with guest artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, the new Captain America arc will bring the run to present day and be a key chapter in the buildup to next summer’s Armageddon, a new comic book event series also written by Zdarsky. In the aftermath of One World Under Doom, Captain America will find himself on the frontlines defending the future of Latveria against a resurfaced threat from the series’ opening arc, as well as outside forces including an ALL-NEW S.H.I.E.L.D., the iconic covert organization not seen since it was dissolved in 2017’s Secret Empire.

Doom’s fall—and a violent incursion by Thunderbolt Ross—have brought Latveria to the brink of civil war! Captain America deploys to protect civilians and investigate rumors of a weapons stockpile, but when Nick Fury Jr.’s unpredictable new version of S.H.I.E.L.D. joins the mission, it becomes clear that everyone wants a piece of Latveria—no matter the cost.

With warring factions tearing the country apart and a squad of unconventional S.H.I.E.L.D. agents pursuing unknown agendas, can Captain America hope to bring peace to Latveria? And is that even what his own handlers want?

Smaller, leaner, and more underground than its predecessor, the re-formed S.H.I.E.L.D. includes an eclectic group of agents: Joe Ramos, an altruistic soldier from Brooklyn; Charles Castlemore, a retired Marine with strong opinions about the Latverian resistance; Trevor Tambling, a soldier of fortune with unclear motives; and Red Widow, a former Russian agent abandoned by her home country for her questionable loyalty. Nick Fury must keep these soldiers in line as they carry out their secret task to retrieve Doom’s weapons—even if it means clashing with Cap!

See S.H.I.E.L.D. in action in Valerio Schiti’s new cover for Captain America #6 and #7, along with new original design sheets, and check out a new promotional variant cover by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar.

NYCC 2024: Marvel announces Ultimate Wolverine

At New York Comic Con’s Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel, the biggest comics panel of the weekend, Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, writer Chris Condon, and more revealed the next ongoing series coming to Marvel’s hit new Ultimate Universe. Joining acclaimed titles Ultimate Spider-ManUltimate Black PantherUltimate X-Men, and Ultimates is… ULTIMATE WOLVERINE!

Hitting stands in January, Ultimate Wolverine will be written by rising star Chris Condon and drawn by Moon Knight powerhouse artist Alessandro Cappuccio. True to the character’s origin as a government weapon, Ultimate Wolverine is an unwilling agent of the Maker, the secret creator of this corrupt universe. Mindwiped and used as an assassin, he’s still the best there is as at what he does… even if he’s not in control of who he does it to.

THE MAKER’S ULTIMATE WEAPON!

In order to maintain control of their corner of the Maker’s world, three members of his council – Magik, Colossus and Omega Red – deploy their most lethal asset: The Winter Soldier! But WHO is the weapon behind the mask?

Before Ultimate Wolverine arrives in January, readers will see him in action for the first time in a prelude story by Condon and Cappuccio in Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1, the special one-shot that concludes the first year of Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe and sets up the next year of stories, including the Maker’s long-awaited return!

NYCC 2024: One world under Doom! Marvel reveals The Rise of Emperor Doom

At New York Comic Con’s Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel, the biggest comics panel of the weekend, Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, VP & Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, and Fantastic Four writer Ryan North revealed more information on what the future holds for the Marvel Universe next year in ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM.

First teased last year at San Diego Comic-Con, “One World Under Doom” is an overarching status quo shift coming to Marvel Comics, the likes of which haven’t been seen since 2008’s Dark Reign. Spinning out of Blood Hunt where Doctor Doom manipulated Doctor Strange into passing him the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, “One World Under Doom” sees Doom accomplish his ultimate goal at last as he uses his new power to take over the entire world. It’s a shocking and upending turn of events that will impact Marvel’s entire line of comics and see the launch of tie-in series and one-shots, collectively forming an era worthy of comic books’ greatest supervillain!

“One World Under Doom” will be anchored by a core title launching in February—Rise of Emperor Doom. The five-issue event series will written by Ryan North, whose acclaimed current run of Fantastic Four will be heavily impacted by “One World Under Doom”, and drawn by one of the industry’s hottest artists, R.B. Silva, known for his defining work on the X-Men in titles like Powers of X and Rise of the Powers of X. While Doom’s reign will be felt across the Marvel Universe, Rise of Emperor Doom will take readers behind the mask as they bear witness to the triumphs and trials of Doom’s rule, as well as the foolish attempts to topple it…

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM!

Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme – then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom’s absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was… the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World – the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it’s mind control or Doombots, whatever’s affecting them hasn’t affected Earth’s heroes – and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom’s machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom?

Check out the Ben Harvey’s main cover for The Rise of Emperor Doom #1, a promotional piece by Greg Land, and interior artwork. Stay tuned more news about the event in the weeks ahead!

SDCC 2024: Marvel announces a new Psylocke solo comic

At the Marvel Comics: X-Men: From the Ashes Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski, Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, and a host of X-Men creators gave fans the scoop on what’s to come in the exciting new era of X-Men comics storytelling, including the reveal of all-new solo ongoing series—Psylocke! Launching in November, Psylocke will be written by Alyssa Wong, known for their acclaimed work on Star Wars: Doctor Aphra and Deadpool, and drawn by rising star Vincenzo Carratù, the artist currently delivering explosive vampire slaying action in Dracula: Blood Hunt.

Psylocke will tie into the character’s current status quo established in Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men #1 where she lends her deadly expertise to Cyclops’ team of X-Men operating out of Alaska. However, there are missions that aren’t suitable for the X-Men and require Psylocke to embrace the teachings of her dark past!

After taking on the mantle of Psylocke, Kwannon became one of Krakoa’s breakout stars in titles like Hellions and Uncanny Avengers. Now, the telepathic and telekinetic ninja goes solo! Her upcoming adventures feature appearances by her lover Greycrow, shed light on her brutal upbringing with the Hand, and introduce a twisted super villain called the Taxonomist!

SHE WAS MADE FOR VIOLENCE! Trained to be an assassin since birth, Kwannon chose to be an X-Man. But there are still some jobs too dirty for the X-Men. And some paths have to be walked alone. When the mission is brutal, Psylocke unsheathes her blades to punish those who prey on mutants. Exploding out of the pages of X-Men, join Psylocke into the underbelly of the Marvel Universe, carving out her own place in a world that would rather see her under control!

Check out the Psylocke #1 cover by Mahmud Asrar and featuring variant covers by Rickie Yagawa, Artegerm, and Hicham Habchi, and stay tuned for more SDCC news throughout the weekend!
