Review: Bolts #3

Frank and his companions find themselves on a road laden with mystery, as every town they pass through is burned to the ground, abandoned. Once they reach a populated town, Frank wonders why the townspeople seem uneasy around him. Intrigue and danger loom around every corner as Frank and his companions finally reach civilization. Lines are drawn and friendships are challenged as Frank faces a new threat in the stunning conclusion to this first arc!

Bolts #3 gives us an interesting way to end the first part of the story arc. It leaves us with an ending that raises more questions, then providing us answers. It also introduces a few more characters and a little bit of additional backstory. Having to wait until early next year to get more this brilliant, and strange series will be a challenge.

This issue does bring in something new that was only briefly seen in the past issues. That’d be a good sized town that is filled with people. That really stands out more due to it being something that seems out of place in this monster-filled world.

Review: Bolts #2

BOLTS_ISSUE_2_COVER_ALife and death hang in the balance as the epic battle against the World Destroyer rages on! Tensions rise as the battle is joined… the question being: will these new combatants be friend or foe?? Frank’s journey continues through terrifying post-apocalyptic terrain in this re-envisioning of the legend of Frankenstein’s Monster by break out talent James Whynot.

In Bolts #2 the strange gets stranger, as this issue adds in more characters along with revealing some of how the world came to be a place inhabited by strange, behemoth animals. While it doesn’t reveal much, I’m curious to see what is coming in future issues. The issue adds more characters who seem to share a dash of red which is odd. Are they connected in some way? The coloring choice would have me to think so.

Sticking to the three color art style allows the issue and series to manage and create a slightly unique read. Whynot allows the natural violence and darkness of the story to stand out in superb fashion through the art. This issue ramps up on the gore and violence some with the opening scene. I’m curious to see how many of the strange new characters will continue to appear as more issues are released.

Review: Bolts #1

BOLTS_ISSUE_1_COVER_RGBDuring a brutal attack by townspeople in his own time, Frank is torn apart and loses his memory. Only to have his mangled body pieced back together and thrown into a new and strange dimension where he crosses paths with Casey, a scavenger with a penchant for trouble. Now the two must face merciless monsters and perilous roads, while Frank fights his own battle to become a righteous hero or spiteful villain!

With Bolts #1 James Whynot has created something that is brilliant, strange, and intriguing. The first issue and series combines a strange environment, filled with mysterious, horrifying looking creatures. It all comes along with strange hints about a villainous being only known as “the dragon.”

I will admit the three color atmosphere, was a surprise at first. Yet the more I read it the more I became enthralled by it. That atmosphere manages to work wonderfully in this conceptual comic and it’s great to see James Whynot, who does double duty as artist, go this route.
