Review: Blood & Lust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #2

blood_and_dust_2-digital-140 years ago the first American vampire became the unlikely savior to the children of Boggy Depot and forged an unlikely agreement with the town. They leave him and his family alone, and he’ll save any children from whatever lives in the swamp. But now Judd needs saving, and his grandkids only hope is their mother. Only problem is she’s more dangerous than the swamp.

I’m really shocked the cover of Blood & Lust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #2 doesn’t say, guest starring the swamp creature. While the focus is on Judd trying to save his grandchildren there is a focus on the history between him and whatever lives in the swamp. Yet I’m curious as to what the swamp creature is since all it reveals is a being covered in vines and not much more.

Darkness seems to carry throughout the issue in both the art and the story. The team manages to show some of Judd’s life in a flashback sequence which fills some things in. The art manages to blend past and present in superb fashion. There’s little difference between them as both times lead to the swamp.

Ruth Glenny has been chained up in the attic for years after the last killing spree she went on when free. But now with their Grandpa and brother trapped by the thing in the swamp, Zeke and Baby Hazel have no choice but to unleash their mother and hope that she’ll stay sane long enough to save their family.

Review: Blood and Dust #1

ALTERNATE Issue 1 Cover copyJudd Glenny is the first American vampire, once he terrorized the West as its most fearsome predator, but for more than 40 years now he’s spent his days in peace, reduced to little more than babysitter for his own vampire offspring. But when the evil that lives in the swamp surrounding the small backwater town he calls home gets ahold of one of Judd’s great grand-kids, everything changes.

Blood and Dust #1 is a Southern style vampire tale with a slight shot old B science fiction movies. While the premiere issue is a little slow, it is all the better for it. Writers Michael R. Martin and Adam J. Orndorf manage to bring in Judd’s violent history to light, as one his grand-kids go missing.

While there is this odd Southern Gothic feel to the art style, the comic is bolstered by the dark atmosphere of the issue. There is a clear absent of lightness in either story or art (so far). Judd’s vampiric transformation is only seen in one panel, but it brings on a clear physical change and something I look forward to seeing more of.
