Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

inhuman #1 coverEach week, comic shops sees their shelves filled with tons of comics waiting to be consumed by the fans. We go through the releases each week to highlight what we think are your best bets to pick up. Below you’ll find ten comics, graphic novels and trade paperbacks you should check out when you head to your shop.

Top Pick: Inhuman #1 (Marvel) – Before the series was out, there was a shake up in the writing department, but prolific writer Charles Soule got the step up to the plate. This series which gives us more of an insight into the new Inhuman world of the Marvel universe seems like it’ll be a pivotal series, and in Soule’s hands, it’ll be a solid read.

Aquaman and the Others #1 (DC Comics) -Aquaman and his band of allies spin off into their own series. Aquaman is one of the highlights of the DC 52, so I’m expecting this series to be a solid one.

Black Science #5 (Image Comics) – One of the most fun new Image series sees a group of mad scientists jumping through the multiverse.

Buzzkill TPB (Dark Horse) -What if you could only get your powers from ingesting chemicals like alcohol, nicotine, or other illicit drugs? What if you wanted to get sober? Find out here!

The Field #1 (Image Comics) -A man wakes in a field wearing nothing but his underwear? Welcome to Image’s latest miniseries.

Harlem Hellfighters (Broadway Books) – The historical graphic novel that follows a black regiment in World War I. A true story written by Max Brooks, that already has movie buzz.

She-Hulk #3 (Marvel) -Another book written by Charles Soule. The first two issues have been amazing.

Shotgun Wedding #1 (Image Comics) -The other Image debut this week sees an assassin hunted down my his former fiance who he left at the altar!

Starlight #2 (Image Comics) -The first issue by Mark Millar was a fantastic updated Flash Gordon. Can’t wait to read the second issue.

Trillium #8  (Vertigo) – The brilliant limited series wraps up this week with this final issue. If you haven’t read the series, go back to the beginning, you won’t be disappointed.

Sell-Outs and New Printing Roundup

Both Marvel and Image Comics this past week have announced numerous sell-outs and reprints. Check out below for the round-up of what you can expect.

Image Comics

Among the sell-outs, BBC chat-show host Jonathan Ross’ and Ian Churchill’s Revenge #1—which follows the vengeful and violent war path of Griffin Franks after enemies surgically remove his face—stirred up fans of grit and gore and was given an Adult rating by Comixology before selling-out instantly on New Comics Day. Its second printing can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JAN148236 and will be available on 3/26.

REVENGE #1 2nd

Chip Zdarsky’s and Matt Fraction‘s runaway hit sex comedy, which reached critical acclaim early on and has been selling out repeatedly in the interim, continued its streak with Sex Criminals #1 selling out yet again. The issue is slated for its 6th printing and can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JAN148237 and will be available on 3/26.

SEX CRIMINALS #1 6th

The first issue of Deadly Class, the action-packed series about teen assassins in the ’80s from Rick Remender and Wes Craig, has sold out instantly as well and is going into its third printing. It can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JAN148238 and will hit the shelves on 3/26.

Review: Black Science #4

BlackScience04-cover“To get through a war, a man needs something bigger than himself to fight for.”

When we last saw our Dimensionauts in Issue #3 we were left with some big surprises. I always thought that Kadir would be the first to cower in the face of adversity and Rebecca would be the last person on the team to kill someone; I was wrong. Whatever you think of Kadir he came through for Ward and Shawn when they needed him most and saved their lives. Back at the Pillar, Rebecca was using her own judgement and saving the lives of everyone else by killing the German hostage who almost gave away their location to his comrades who happened to be patrolling the area. We were also treated to a flashback scene just minutes before the Pillar jumped our Dimensionauts to their first layer of the “onion”. That is a sentence I never thought I would type.

We are now at Black Science #4 and it’s hard to believe that what has transpired since the first issue has only spanned a few hours in the eyes of our team. Ward, Shawn and Kadir are on their way back to the Pillar with the Shaman that’s supposed to heal Grant’s wounds in tow. Through mine fields, warriors on horseback with laser hatchets and their vehicle exploding from a missile, they managed to get the Shaman back to the Pillar in time. However, Ward sacrificed himself for the good of the group; he held back some of the warriors to give Shawn enough time to get back with the medic. And just when we thought Kadir could rise to the occasion he lets us all down and runs to save himself.

The Pillar counts down to zero and our team, minus (Spoiler Alert: Highlight to read) Ward (R.I.P.), plus the Shaman, get flashed to their new randomly chosen destination. Is it another land on the back of gigantic turtles with electric-tongued frogs? Another wasteland in a war-torn Europe with giant robots? Nope, it’s none of those; it’s a hotel…and they have scotch. Grant was healed by the Shaman and now they are looking for parts in this new dimension to possibly fix the Pillar to go home and everything will beg fine. Unless the new threat at the end finds them first.

The amazing thing about Black Science is the art by Matteo Scalera and Dean White that transports the reader into each of these pages and into each of these dimensions. White’s painted art matches perfectly with the story being told during the rescue/escape scene. The way Scalera draws the characters makes you really feel their emotions especially during (Spoiler) Ward’s final moments and Kadir’s sense of guilt. It blows my mind how I find myself staring at each page for so long in awe and realize how immersed I am in this world they (with writer Rick Remender) created. Black Science has proven itself as a top book worthy of anyone’s Pull-List. This particular issue may have lacked in certain areas of dialogue but it sets up a grander story to be told in issues to come. And I can’t wait for those issues.

Grant McKay and his team of Dimensionauts are given a short reprieve when the Pillar drops them not into a hellish warzone or an alien swampland but a…hotel? Just don’t trust the room service; there’s more to this place than meets the eye.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

WKE_Cv6_previews_ikd7i9cxxu__527d5ffaed0b43.28413751It’s a packed week of comics, with a lot of solid choices coming out from numerous publishers. So, to help you out , some of the Graphic Policy team has compiled our picks of the comics we’re looking forward to this week.

Andrew

Top Pick: The Wake #6 (Vertigo) – It’s back. Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy’s merfolk horror story jumps 200 years in the future. I liken the break in this series with The Walking Dead’s mid-season hiatus, it’s been WAY too long.

King Conan The Conqueror #1 (Dark Horse) – This is the second part of Tim Truman’s adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s novel The Hour of the Dragon…and its start is just as fantastic as last year’s run. I can’t envision Conan any other way than this.

Pariah #1 (Dark Horse) – Genetically engineered geniuses known as “vitros” must band together and create a plan to get back to Earth before their failing satellite turns into a deathtrap. After watching Gravity, this series looks interesting.

Vandroid #1 (Dark Horse) – Tommy Lee Edwards and Noah Smith resurrect an early 80s grindhouse film script that was nearly lost in a studio fire. A rich playboy and a drugged out genius engineer create a humanoid entity that takes matters into his own hands. The cover of this issue alone deserves awards.

Trade Paperback/Graphic Novel: Breath of Bones A Tale of the Golem HC (Dark Horse) – This rounds out Dark Horse’s near sweep of my top picks this week. Steve Niles creates a poignant, gorgeous story of a Jewish boy’s stand against the Nazis…and the monster under his bed that helped him.

Brett

Top Pick: The Wake #6 (Vertigo) – It’s been too long since this series hit shelves, but boy am I ready to dive into the second part of writer Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy’s horror/sci-fi/apocalyptic story. He said to expect a twist at the end of the first volume and he was right. I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us.

Black Science #4 (Image Comics) – This series from Image mixes crazy science fiction with an almost Jules Verne vibe about it all. The action is awesome, science fun, and art fantastic.

Furious #2 (Dark Horse) – It’s celebrity meets superherodom. The second issue continues the fantastic story of a superhero in today’s age of 24 hour news and social media.

Hacktivist #2 (Archaia/BOOM! Studios) – The comic that focuses on online activism continues as the government and CIA make an offer to our keyboard jockeys.

Tomb Raider #1 (Dark Horse) – Writer Gail Simone takes on the recently rebooted video gamer heroine. Should be a great combination, and while I haven’t read the issue yet, it’s high on my anticipation list for the week.

Trade Paperback/Graphic Novel: Megagogo Vol. 1 (Oni Press) – A new ongoing graphic novel that lets us know what happens when you put a washed up loser, an awkward teen going through puberty, and an immortal being into a giant robot. Monsters have returned to wreak havoc on the South, and while the team must defend Atlanta, they must first get past the KKK! How does this not sound awesome?

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

FURIO-#1-PINUP-PerezIt’s a new week of comics and there’s a massive list of fantastic releases coming out, in monthly floppies, trade paperbacks and graphic novels! Check out below for your best bets this week!

Top Pick: Furious #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve been looking forward to this series since I caught a glimpse of it at last years Baltimore Comic Con. The comic looks at superheroes through the lens of celebrity. Expect a review up today, and I’ll give you a hint… I liked it a lot!

Black Science #3 (Image Comics) – Image Comics’ series mixes mad science with mad humor. The writing, world, story, art, all mix together for one of the strongest debuts of a series lately.

East of West #9 (Image Comics) – An apocalyptic western, the comic takes place in an alternate United States where the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse run free. It’s everything I want in a western infused with sci-fi elements.

The Final Plague #4 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Every issue gives me the creeps. This horror series is that good.

Miracleman #2 (Marvel) – A chance to read one of the most heralded comic series. Reprinted for a new generation to enjoy.

Revival #17 (Image Comics) – I think this zombie series might be better than that other one that gets all the notice. Focusing on the people in a quarantined town, each issue is a slowly revealed mystery.

Saga #18 (Image Comics) – Universally loved. It topped “best of” lists in 2013 and 2012. Find out why before you get too far behind.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 (Dark Horse) – The popular cult tv series returns to comics!

Superior Spider-Man #26 (Marvel) – Dan Slott starts his end game for story lines he’s been manipulating for years. One of the best superhero comics on the market.

Thief of Thieves #19 (Image Comics) – Catch this one before it hits the tv screen. An entertaining series about the world’s greatest thief.

Top Graphic Novel/Tradepaperback: Snowpiercer Vol. 1 (Titan Comics) – This graphic novel will have a movie based on it out soon. Mankind survives on a train that never stops, protecting them from bitter cold. It’s a fascinating study on class and country.
