Popeye: The Classic Newspaper Comics by Bobby London: Volume Two: 1989-1992
Bobby London (w & a & c)
When we say “complete,” we mean COMPLETE! Bobby London’s take on the Sailor Man has often been overshadowed by his being fired from the strip in 1992, ostensibly for presenting a storyline that was an allegory about abortion. King Features Syndicate pulled the final three weeks of strips and daily newspapers began running reprints. Story over in mid-stream.
Now, 22 years later, thanks to the kind cooperation of the good folks at King Features, those three weeks will be included in this second volume of our series. But wait… that’s not all! Turns out that Bobby London produced an additional six weeks of strips beyond the three that were pulled from syndication!

Former CIA agent, international ladies man, and sworn ass-kicking enemy of The Man… he’s Black Dynamite—and he’s about to walk into the most dangerous journey of his life!
Black Dynamite #1 takes the spoof action/comedy blaxploitation cult character and brings him to the comic pages courtesy of IDW Publishing. The kung-fu fighting former CIA agent Black Dynamite must deal with the reality he might not be the best thing there is for his neighborhood, leading him to a strange journey.
I’m a huge fan of 70s exploitation and especially blaxploitation films. There’s something about them that’s fun, entertaining, action packed, and a solid commentary on society. They’re also usually highly offensive. The first issue hits all of those perfectly having me laughing and cringing at the same time. This feels like the movie, character and genre laid out on comic pages.
The first issue is mostly set-up, so its difficult to say exactly how the overall story is, but the events leading up to Black Dynamite hitting the road, and what’s said by various folks is just amazing, with dialogue I’ll have to use in real life at some point (and probably either be slapped or looked at funny).
The blaxploitation genre has a long history of being spoofed, and Black Dynamite keeps up that tradition. There’s a fine line between spoofing and mocking something and the first issue perfectly walks it.
Brian Ash‘s awesome writing is backed up Ron Wimberly and Sal Buscema‘s fantastic art with a retro feel to it all that would fit in perfectly with actual comics from the 70s.
This was just a fun comic for me and anyone who either dug the movie this comic is based on, or that type of genre in general should absolutely pick this up.

Oh NO, it looks like Buttercup was right all along! The Ex-Villains have reverted to their old ways and are tearing up Townsville! The Powerpuff Girls are out-numbered but never outmatched—that is, until the horrible shadow of HIM falls across the battlefield. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, huh?

This week we continue the new format of our top picks with some of the contributors to the site pitching in and saying what comics they’re looking forward to this coming week.
Andrew
Top Pick: Night of the Living Deadpool #1 (Marvel) – You had me at Cullen Bunn. The writer of Helheim penning a four-part zombie Deadpool miniseries is a no-brainer…literally.
Batman Li’l Gotham #10 (DC) – This digital-first series concluded last month after 24 issues, and it couldn’t have been more fantastic. Dustin Nguyen’s water colors in a child-friendly Gotham made for an exceptional run. I have them all on my iPad, and I STILL can’t wait for the trades.
Disney Kingdoms Seekers of the Weird #1 (Marvel) – I know, it’s a weird title, but I’d read about this series a while back and something makes me want to pick it up.
The X-Files: Conspiracy #1 (IDW) – If this is what I think it is, the Lone Gunmen are crossing over with Ghostbusters (and other familiar characters) in a short two-issue series. Yup.
Trade Pick:Ten Grand TP Vol 1 (Image) – I’ll be honest, I left when Templesmith left, but every issue he’s on is extraordinary, and this trade collects them all.
Brett
Top Pick: Miracleman #1 (Marvel) – Marvel reprints the classic series for a new generation to enjoy with all new material for folks to check out. I myself have never read the series (I think) so look forward to getting a chance to finally read what I’ve been told so much about.
Black Dynamite #1 (IDW Publishing) – Um, how can you not want to read a comic based on the cult movie?!
Curse #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from BOOM! A man heads into the woods in hopes of picking up a bounty to save his son, but of course there’s a twist.
Indestructible #2 – I loved the first issue from Darby Pop Publishing which has an average guy is mistaken with having super powers. Some really good humor mixed with the usual super heroics.
Skyman #1 – A new series from Dark Horse and Joshua Hale Fialkov is part of the publisher’s reinvigorated super hero line. The first issue is a great kick off.
Jack Kirby’s New Gods Artist’s Edition will collect Issues 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of NEW GODS—the most important Fourth World book. Written and drawn by Jack Kirby, with inks by Mike Royer on all but one issue, this classic collection was originally published by DC Comics and is the very first Artist’s Edition to feature the legendary artistic prowess of “King Kirby!” Nearly every page of this Artist’s Edition has been scanned from the original art, and is presented in the multi award-winning format that was conceived and first presented by IDW Publishing!
Jack Kirby has correctly been called the King of Comics. In a career that began in the Golden Age of Comics, Kirby virtually kick-started the medium. He created (or co-created): Captain America, Manhunter, The Newsboy Legion, The Fantastic Four, Challengers of the Unknown, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk… the list goes on and on. Now, for the first time ever, you can see Jack Kirby‘s stunning originals in all their full-sized glory—You think you’ve seen Jack Kirby‘s art before? You ain’t seen nothing yet!

Popeye: The Classic Newspaper Comics by Bobby London, Volume One: 1986-1989
Bobby London (w & a & c)
Famed Dirty Duck and Air Pirates cartoonist Bobby London’s more than six-year run on the Popeye newspaper strip has been hailed both as a unique original creation and as an homage to Elzie Segar‘s larger Thimble Theatre vision. “Segar was the seminal influence in my career,” the cartoonist said. London updated the strip to reflect current pop culture and also brought back the extended story format favored by Segar. London gives us new yet familiar versions of Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee’ Pea, and Wimpy, as well as Popeye’s Pappy, Olive’s brother Castor, Eugene the Jeep, Bernice the Whiffle Hen, the menacing Sea Hag, Alice the Goon, and more!

The fifth book in IDW’s shambling series of original Zombies vs Robots prose collections. Fully illustrated by the fantabulous Fabio Listrani, this new anthology features fresh tales of rotting flesh and rusting metal. IDW further expands the apocalyptic hellscape of its unique signature franchise. A world where brain-eaters roam and warbots rule is truly a NO MAN’S LAND.
In Volume 16, Chester Gould presents an amazing number of memorable characters: grotesques such as the murderous Rughead and a 467-lb. killer named Oodles, health faddist George Ozone and his wild boys named Neki and Hokey, the despicable “Nothing” Yonson, the amoral teenager Joe Period, and the introduction of nightclub photog-turned policewoman Lizz. Plus for the first time Gould brings back an old villain: Mumbles, who was thought drowned in 1947. And finally, he introduces what may be his most mature story of the 1950s—starring none other than Flattop Jr.!
