Devil’s Due Wants you to Talk Bernie to Me!

Talk Bernie To Me!:​ The Bernie Sanders Special and AOC Surprise

After making international headlines with its superhero comic about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chicago’s Devil’s Due Comics has announced a sequel is now available for pre-order. Talk Bernie To Me!:​ The Bernie Sanders Special and AOC Surprise is a one-off commemorative comic celebrating two-time Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, featuring contributions from several acclaimed and award-winning writers/artists. (Variant covers are also available.) 

In addition to depicting the Vermont Senator as a full-fledged  superhero, Talk Bernie To Me! will be chock full of short-form Bernie comics, Trump and GOP skewering, plus satirical games and puzzles. The comic is slated for a July 3, 2019 release (in both physical and digital form), and by popular demand will include additional AOC content. Pre-orders can be made at BernieComic.com, with a portion of all sales going to the ACLU and RaicesTexas.org, which provides free and low-cost legal services to under-served immigrant children, families, and refugees.

Talk Bernie to Me! features contributions from Josh Baylock, Tim Seeley, Hoyt Silva, Marguerite Dabaie, K. Lynn Smith, CW Cooke, Aly Faye, Christa Cassano, Paul Buhle, Kit Caoagas, Gary Dumm, Laura Dumm, Nick Accardi, Sam Wells, Liz McArthur, Jason Goungor, Sherard Jackson, Peter Rostovsky, and Joel Herrera. It’s set for release July 3, 2019.

The announcement comes mere weeks after Devil’s Due announced its Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force comic (available here as of May 15), and ten years after the debut of its wildly-popular Barack the Barbarian graphic novel series. All three titles are the brainchild of artist and Devil’s Due Publisher Josh Blaylock, ​working in tandem with an all-star group of talent.

While politics may be serious (or not serious enough depending on who you ask), there’s a bit of silliness that creeps in, especially when it comes to campaign season. Theatrics play a large role, and questions posed to candidates range from substantive policy to boxers or briefs?

The Daily Dot took it upon themselves to ask the biggest question out there:

Where do the candidates stand on the Superhero Registration Act?

For those that might not know, this summer’s upcoming film Captain America: Civil War, based off of the Marvel comic series Civil War, pits Captain America against Iron Man as the two have a fall out concerning legislation that would force superheroes to register with the government. In the comics Captain America stood against the legislation while Iron Man was pro-registration.

We can speculate as to where the candidates stand on this pressing issue, and if they’re #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan, but one candidate actually responded, Bernie Sanders.

Yes, we can now reveal that the Bernie Sanders campaign is #TeamCap, endorsing Captain America in this year’s fictional Marvel showdown.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the Sanders campaign responded. Campaign manager Jeff Weaver is not just a friend and adviser to Sanders, as well as running the Presidential campaign, Weaver also has a long history with comic books. After years of collecting and needing a break from politics, in 2009 Weaver opened the shop Victory Comics just outside of Washington, DC in Falls Church (a store I frequent). Weaver is also the “co-discoverer of the Lost Valley Pedigree Collection—an original Golden Age pedigree collection that consisted of many of the most significant and well preserved examples of comics from the dawn of the hobby to the 1950s.” In May Weaver took a break from Victory to return to the campaign trail, he managed Sanders’ first Senate campaign in 2006, and worked on his earlier campaigns.

Bernie Sanders Supporters Descend on San Diego Comic-Con

SDCC15-Bernie-SandersEach year I head to numerous conventions all around the country and I wonder where are the political parties. With tens of thousands of individuals in one area, it’s a perfect opportunity to whip up support, get the word out, and sign up some voters. Well, it seems like at least one set of supporters of a candidate had the same idea and headed to San Diego Comic-Con to do just that.

Supporters of Bernie Sanders 2016 were on hand at the convention to show their support for the Presidential candidate for the Democratic nomination. The group brought along a cardboard cut-out of the candidate, and made a poster of Sanders made up to look like Doc Brown from Back to the Future (though they left it at home). Instead they created a poster with a Mad Max theme that pitted the candidate against the Koch brothers which you can see to the left.

The group handed out 1,500 Bernie stickers and posters as well as a flyer going over Sanders’ 12-point plan. The impact is unknown as most con-goers will grab just about anything handed to them (my luggage back from the convention is a perfect example of this).

While the impact of such activity is unknown, it’s good to see a candidate’s supporters getting out there and trying to raise awareness. Engaging the geek community instead of just using them to score pop culture hits is a nice change of pace. Hopefully others will get a clue and engage.
